What's really at stake

In VP debate, listen to who is telling the truth about nation's condition

  • Follow Editorials

The two major political parties and the media always try to make presidential elections about the personalities of those running – and to a large extent, we go along with them.

So presidential campaigns become like student-government elections; whom do you like best?

This election is different. It has to be.

This time, we’re being asked whether to keep heading for the cliff or to turn away from it.

This election is not about personalities and parties. It’s about principles, ideas, the laws of economics and the facts surrounding America’s financial state.

In short, we simply cannot continue on the path we’re on.

We already owe more than any country in history, between $16 trillion in already-spent funds and some go to $100 trillion in promised future spending for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

With the United States borrowing 40 cents of every dollar the federal government spends, and Washington printing money to finance that binge, our very currency is at risk. At the least, it reduces our buying power and risks inflation or deflation.

What happens when lenders won’t lend us more? What happens if the currency crashes?

We may not want to imagine that, but we need not do so: The lessons are right there in history for us to look at, across centuries in which world powers spent themselves to decline or ruin. Rome, the Weimar Republic, Britain, Argentina and more killed or seriously wounded themselves with debt.

What makes us think we’d be any different? What makes us think we can suspend the laws of economics, any more than we can the law of gravity?

As it stands now, America’s fiscal house probably can’t be put back together for 15 or 20 years – and that’s assuming we get cracking now. That means a succession of presidents and Congresses united on solving our fiscal problems.

That’s assuming a lot. But we’ve got to at least first take the initial steps of admitting our problem, electing the problem solvers and then accepting the sometimes painful solutions.

If you want to get a taste of how difficult it will all be, just look at Western Europe. Few places on Earth call for more austerity, but the cutbacks in generous pensions and public benefits have inspired protests and riots and more. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was villified as Adolf Hitler recently in Greece for the Eurozone-inspired austerity measures there – even though it’s largely through the industry of German workers and German loans that some other European workers have enjoyed enviable lifestyles.

Is this the future we wish for ourselves and our children?

If not, we need to change course. Now.

Watch the vice presidential debate tonight with an ear for who is telling you the truth about the state of things in America.

Then consider electing candidates who not only will tell you the truth, but will actually do something about it.

Well A123 battery company is

Well A123 battery company is going broke and being bought by a Chinese company. $240 million dollars of tax payer money went into A123. I wonder how much money the owners put in their pocket and how much the tax payers will get back? How can we continue four more years of this type of nonsense? http://www.forbes.com/sites/boblutz/2012/08/08/a123-goes-chinese-will-wa... No wonder America is going broke. Romney was right Obama picks losers!

With the LibyaGate cover up

With the LibyaGate cover up developments, my bet is even if Obama is re-elected he will likely be impeached for the cover up. I guess progressives are learning they can't always re-invent history when technology proves the contrary. I guarantee you Clinton wont go down for this and she will pass the buck to Obama (she's lookin' at 2016).

Reality check

Take time out to watch the movie Cold Mountain if you want to see what our society will be like when our economy crashes and the money is no good anymore. No one is alive to tell us what it was like, but there was extensive research done and it really happened right here in the USA! Everyone agrees (even liberals) that we are swiftly heading towards that cliff, yet some of us are still in denial.

A Cherokee Indian once put it best when commenting on the white man's lust for gold. "You can't eat it."

What does Romney want to do?

What does Romney want to do? Because- he flip flops and changes positions depending on who he is talking too. Keep social security and Medicare the same? That’s Romney! Increased defense spending? That’s Romney! Want raise taxes to pay for it? Nope! Just close some loop holes to pay for it. Which ones, none of the popular ones American’s use.

The debt and deficit will continue under Romney as well- because he is just promising the world to whomever is in the audience at that moment.

'the federal budget deficit

'the federal budget deficit for that fiscal year, which began on October 1, 2008, was already $1.2 trillion. President Obama's additional '09 spending added another $200 billion to the deficit, bringing the total to $1.412 trillion'. (2008 being a republican budget)... President Obama signed the Statutory Pay-As-You-Go Act in February, 2010, which mandates that new spending be offset with spending cuts or new revenue. Yes, a Democratic president and a Democratic Congress passed this legislation. Guess how many congressional Republicans voted for the law. Zero. Yes, the president said he'd cut the deficit in half -- but he absolutely did not double it. As I've outlined here, he's cut the deficit by 22 percent so far -- 35 percent by the end of 2013. what about Republican presidents? Bush 43? He turned a $200 billion surplus into a $400 billion deficit by the end of his first term, and a $1.2 trillion deficit by the end of his second term. Bush 41? No. Reagan? No. Ford? No. Nixon? No. The last Republican president who cut the deficit was Eisenhower. READ AND WEEP !!!

Is Obama for or against gay marriage? Is he for or against closing GITMO? Was the attack on our consulate a terror attack or not.....If you listen to Obama....who knows, but Romney is the only one who "flip-flops."

A good way to usurp that is to NEVER pass a budget. How do you cut a budget deficit with no budget?

My apologies to Mittens. I

My apologies to Mittens. I hope you correct people when they call the President, Obumler and other dumb names.

Willard, is a flip flopper. A person that stands for nothing.

Romney has also flip flopped on gay rights, however he is going backwards, while Obama has been advancing them.

Obama tried to close GITMO, however American's are afraid the people down there are X-Man, and with their super powers they will escape prison and terrorize people. Can't send them to other nations, even though Obama tried and failed, because other nations do not believe in locking up humans indefinitely without trials.

And this Libya thing is complicated. I can't speak for what the Obama admin has done, or trying to do- but during this investigation, the Republicans has outed some secrets. So- maybe the Obama admin was trying to protect the secrets.

Obama does lie some- don't get me wrong. But at least you have an idea where he stands. Unlike Willard.

Good one Angie. Obama always

Good one Angie. Obama always like to leave a paper trail (so he can document he actually did something) but reality is always different when he does nothing or just the opposite. And Dems have made numerous deals with Rep the will cut spending if the Rep concede on raising taxes. The Dems never follow through with cuts. It is always spend, spend, spend. All these number are played with and spin around so much it's ridiculous.Bill Clinton didn't balance the budget and leave a surplus a Newt Rep Congress did.

this garbage out of the way first: democrats took over Congress in Jan. 2006. That's 2-0-0-6 for any of you lefties that have trouble reading. The frank-dodd or dodd-frank act placed the housing market in its nose dive. Two democrats! obama would rather climb a tree and lie than stand on the ground and tell the truth. Just look at the assassination of the Ambassador to Libya. Garbage about an American anti- islam film. The brain damaged v.p. biden is so blatantly arrogant about his lies, even his poor dog believes him. You democrats push me off of the cliff and I'm going to take a bunch of you with me. Got it?

If you're not willing to

If you're not willing to correct Obumler and other things, Mittens it shall remain.

When wiki leaks released all their documents, you can read the cables of America trying to pass off prisoners to other nations. And Obama failed to move the people from GITMO to other Federal prisons in America, but could not get the funding for it.

And if you’re trying to protect national secrets and assets in the area – people will lie and distort to protect them. Rep. Jason Chaffetz gave out valuable information to the enemy… so lies to protect American interests are okay. It’s demanded actually.

So attempting to do something

So attempting to do something that he SHOULD have known he couldn't do (pass off prisioners to countries that don't want them) is considered trying....I understand. Sort of like saying you are going to pay off the debt, but your plan is something that would never work, like hoping that people will just give you money out of the goodness of their hearts. It would work if only my rediculous plan would work.

Explain how lying about a terror attack that killed 4 Americans is saving Americans?

How is lying about Fast and Furious, which killed Americans, is saving Americans?

As for "Mittens." If you feel that showing disrespect is the only way you can communicate, then so be it. The same for those who can't spell Obama.

come on now, two unfunded wars, an unfunded prescription program, a 1.2 TRILLION dollar deficit budget in his last year. It seems the pot calling the kettle black here. I would think WE can agree that BOTH sides have kowtowed to their more extreme elements and NOT been able to come up with a reasonable compromise because they want to be all things to all sides. Why one side should be given credence over the other is based upon ideology, a good thing for sure, but when actual practical solutions must be decided, the answer is somewhere in the middle, Politics 101, unless your so 'righteous' that you want to change the rules in the middle of the game. (not good for a nation that has been using compromise for 250 years to govern)

I guess Obams's 3 wars is better than Bush's 2....but I won't do like the liberals here and attempt to justify poor behavior by pointing out someone else's poor behavior.

"a 1.2 TRILLION dollar deficit budget in his last year." What was the deficit in Obama's budget? Oh...that's right....we don't know, because he has never passed a budget.

That is considered politics.

Willard is on an entire level by himself of lying, and having no standards. It's the reason Newt Gingrich said “You can’t run a campaign with no principles". It's the reason why Willards own campaign manager applied the adjective of Etch-n-Sketch to his own boss.

How many have died because of a lie he told? You know...those "bumps in the road." A man who considers the murder of his own fellow citizens as "bumps in the road" is on his own level of character.

If you want to talk about lying and Americans dying because of it, along with hundred of thousands of innocent people- the Iraq war was not that long ago. Willard is getting his foreign policy advice from the same people who advised Bush….

But what lie is it you're referring too that caused deaths?

Fast and Furious- yeah-

Fast and Furious- yeah- that's awful. However investigations by Republicans concluded that Obama did not lie- that it was poor management at ATF levels in the area.

What was the lie the Obama gave that killed Americans?

And like I said earlier: "Willard is getting his foreign policy advice from the same people who advised Bush."
