Buying an election with your money

Scheme involving Lockheed martin marks a new political low

  • Follow Editorials

We don’t mince words here, and we won’t now: The Obama administration is trying to buy this election.

Defense contractors are obliged under federal law to send out notices of possible layoffs to their employees within 60 days of potential layoffs – in this case, in the face of massive impending cuts to federal defense spending at the end of the year.

But because Lockheed Martin’s layoff notices to 123,000 workers would come just days before the November election, the Obama administration has been working hard to avoid the unpleasantness. And it appears to have found a way.

A very dubious, likely illegal way.

The administration has asked Lockheed Martin to ignore the federal law and not send out the layoff notices before the election. Moreover, the administration has offered to use taxpayer money to hold Lockheed Martin harmless if there are
financial repercussions from violating the law.

Have you ever? Has a presidential administration ever more blatantly and publicly and shamelessly encouraged lawlessness – or for more transparent political gain?

Many of the workers who would get notices, you see, live in Virginia – a very key swing state in this election.

So, yes: The Obama administration is trying to use your money to purchase Virginia’s support in November.

Even if defense contractor employees fall for that ruse and help get Mr. Obama re-elected, what might their future look like under a second Obama term? Do they think this president is bullish on defense? Do they think a commander in chief who watched on as the defense industry was pushed to this brink will be its champion when he has no more elections to curry favor for?

Ignoring laws is nothing new for this administration. It also unilaterally decided not to enforce the Defense of Marriage Act, and to extend amnesty to certain illegal aliens even though Congress has expressly decided not to do so.

But encouraging others to ignore the law is a new low.

Look for more of the same extra-constitutional imperiousness should the gambit in Virgina bear fruit.

The other sick irony of this

To me the sick irony of this whole despicable mess is that President Obama has told the contractors that he will pay their legal liabilities with tax dollars!

That's how it's been done in America since its founding. Hellooo?! Who is talking 'bout the deficit? Cutting spending? Lowering government costs? Republicans are, but when it comes to eliminating military spending...they scream like stuck pigs. KBR owned by Cheney made billions off the wars he started with Bush, so what observations did this writer had at THAT time about "benefitting" from political decisions? The president is getting it done and "buying" an election is old news to those who remember the Bush-Cheney yrs.

Listen Carefully!

The AC Editor's message in today's accompanying editorial asks its readers to listen carefully for substance over rhetoric. I do this every day when reading this newspaper's commentaries. Having said this, I say, Mr. Obama has to be replaced as CEO of our nation. There is no "The Buck Stops Here" slogan on his Oval Office desk, and for a good reason -- he will not take responsibility for the financial travesty our nation is suffering through. And before anyone else comments, Yes, Bush 43 got the ball rolling, but Mr. Obama has done nothing to curtail the demise. He is a socialist, and his "share the wealth" approach is not working. He has lost the trust of business owners, and these are the ONLY people who count when it comes to rebuilding a national economy.

Mr. Obama, go away!

The Obama Administration is trying to buy this election? Good one, my sides hurt from laughing. Just the 2 Koch brothers and Sheldon Adelson have pledged $500 million or HALF OF A BILLION DOLLARS $$$ against Obama. That's half of what Obama AND McCain raised in 2008 COMBINED (both campaigns, does not count outside spending). Now who exactly is trying to buy this election?

Halliburton, etc. The powers behind war. The powers that do everything for the Pentagon from supplying stealth bombers to peeling potatoes for the troops. If these giants were to lose their contracts for war, the American economy would collapse. They are entrenched in production in every state in the USA. Defacto government jobs. Manufacturing jobs. Yes, the government does produce tangible items. Tangible products for war and world domination.

Techfan, that is giving of

Techfan, that is giving of one's own money not taxpayer money that Obama uses to buy votes. The editorial just gives one example. Want some more. Go to obamaphone.net and see how his administration is giving phones away. They even advertise that texting plans are available. Want another. Earlier this year his Dept. of Agriculture who administers the food stamp program made a big announcement and a celebration announcing the record number of people they have gotten enrolled in the food stamp program. And it was just reported that Obama and his administration have had over 30 meetings since 2008 with the Mexican president and his adminstration about the food stamp program. Obama is working with them to get as many Mexicans on food stamps as they can. Do you get it, Techfan? He is meeting with a foriegn gov't plotting to put as many foreigners on our welfare programs as he can. You just can't make this stuff up. The dems have put into overdrive their same strategy with Mexicans that Lyndon Johnson started in the 60's with the black population. Enslave them with welfare and benefits and ensure they vote Democrat for decades in the future. The "war on poverty" started by Johnson was ultra successful not only with African-Americans but also with just as many whites. It robbed them of any incentive to do for themselves resulting in generation after generation of dependent and loyal democratic voters. The war on poverty did not even put a dent in poverty but to the contrary ensured it perpetuation. We are all doomed.

One more thing, Techfan

Did you read how much George Soros is giving to the Democrats? Why is that okay but it is evil and wrong if the Koch brothers give money to republicans?

Everything I see says Soros

Everything I see says Soros gave a whopping ONE million to Obama's SuperPac and has given an additional $1.25 milllion to other Dems. So far that's only a 500:1 ratio. Have a point there?

Yeah, those programs that help your family when you get ill or laid off are horrible. Let 'em starve, that's so much better. I think that was what Jesus said, "To heck with the poor. They're worthless. Be greedy and keep all of your money and you'll be blessed."

Away from what the article is about. Circumventing the law. Nothing about donations. He is urging a company to break the law and is willing to use your tax dollars to pay their legal fees for doing so. What does any of that have to do with how much someone gave from their own money?

Wanted you to work for what you needed. Not sit around and collect money for being sorry. Once again you deflect to something that you know is not meant. When people talk about generational welfare they are talking about the do nothings that collect a check. They are not talking about the old, disabled or those that really need the help. Nice try though...

If at first you don't succeed....

The key issue is Obama’s Administration encouraging Defense Contractors to break the law! The initial “guidance” was released on July 30th. See for yourselves…

http://wdr.doleta.gov/directives/attach/TEGL/TEGL_3_12_acc.pdf

The latest “guidance” now claims taxpayers will cover the cost for employers who break the law.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/memoranda/2012/m-12-19...

I agree this is all about preventing massive layoffs from hitting the press 5 days before the election and hurting Obama.

Bloomberg's did a transparency test on Obama's new transparency law and found all but one of his cabinet members broke his law. Apparently he is the least transparent president ever-which should be a red flag to any person with common sense. Obama says one thing and then does another-done that his whole life.

yadda, yadda,yadda...

wow... looking forward to four more years of the pot calling the kettle black from those who lived through 8 years of Bush without a peep !!! We are in dire need of open dialogue over our fiscal policies without the likes of the AC editorial board regurgitating the fringe right's righteous point of view. (liar, Muslim,law-breaker,food stamp king,socialist,abortionist,unfit,etc...) How this much hate and discuss can ever HELP to effect the changes needed is beyond me and in fact IS the problem, even though so many media companies keep it up because it FEEDS THEIR BOTTOM LINE. Gotta love it when shareholders are valued over the good of the country. and so many sheep just keep following along.

Faithson....when did Bush

Faithson....when did Bush offer to use tax payer money to break the law?

And how is it a fringe right point of view to point out how the President is encouraging people to break the law? It's rightous to expect the President of the US to NOT break the law? I'll never understand the left's ability to look the other way no matter what Obama does.

"How this much hate and discuss can ever HELP to effect the changes needed is beyond me" I guess you never heard of George III and the American Revolution. The hate and disgust (discuss) that the colonists had for the king did them a world of good.

But if it makes you feel better to try to distract from the high crimes and misdemeaners of this president by bringing up Bush, go right ahead....you have that right.

high crimes and misdemeaners

Angie, you do realize that if IN FACT, not in supposition, our President was guilty of your accusations, the republicans would be on it in a skinny minute. I would suggest that the great problem in all this on both sides is that the deft public only listens to those media pundits that SAY what they WANT to hear, period, Without any objective analyisis as to motivations. Some on these boards from both sides show promise here, but others that just parrot the party line without concern for its validity are the ones who damage their own arguments.

The Republicans are on it.

The Republicans are on it. They don't get coverage from the MSM so it does no good. They can only talk to the choir..that's all they have.

A columnist with the NY Times said this morning on C-Span that rather than say the GDP is getting severly worse, they will lead with a headline...Stock market is up! or housing market improves...

Even the writers for these media outlets know that they are in the tank for Obama.
If Romney can't make head way tonight in the debate then we are in for 4 more years that all of us will realize is a grave mistake, and you know the first to suffer, don't you?.

Why was Obama kissing up to

Why was Obama kissing up to Putin, a man who holds him in contempt.
At some point he has to realize that all things are not as he wants it. He seems to live in a world of his own making...and where does that leave our country. WE need a full time, caring person for president and not a part-time person who thinks he is above the American public. And Congress, he even sends Biden to deal with them..Biden!!! Sheesh. The man with a thousand and one excuses.
But you have to admit he DID say he is lazy.
