Drawing the line somewhere

Netanyahu's crucial message obscured by media trivialities

  • Follow Editorials

Can you imagine a world leader warning us in the 1930s about the massing threat of Hitler’s Nazis – and the media at the time merely chuckling it off because of the chart the leader used to warn us?

That’s the reality today, folks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the only world leader acting like an adult when it comes to the peril percolating from Tehran, gave a landmark, historic, vitally important speech to the United Nations recently on Iran’s growing nuclear weapons threat. And yet, all the media wanted to talk about was what they considered to be a cartoonish “bomb” graphic he used to illustrate the Iranian pursuit of a nuclear weapon.

Really? Is humanity that easily distracted from momentous moments such as this? Whether the graphic was effective?

Good grief.

The Obama administration says a nuclear-armed Iran is unacceptable. But in putting up even an unsophisticated drawing at the United Nations, Mr. Netanyahu appears to have done more about the problem than the current U.S. administration.

At least Netanyahu’s stunt got the world talking about the impending point of no return in Iran. What has this American president done?

The prime minister explained that his point was exactly that – to get the world’s attention.

It worked.

“Hundreds of millions of people saw it and understand now what they perhaps did not understand beforehand – what it means to stop Iran, at what phase and what stage of its nuclearization,” he said in an interview over the weekend. “The red line needs to be before Iran finishes the second stage of enriching the material it needs for an atomic bomb.”

The world cannot one day say it did not know. Benjamin Netanyahu spelled it out for us in red: Now is the time to peacefully prevent the nuclearization of Iran. Afterward is too late. Afterward, it’s quite possible to have a nuclear conflagration in the Mideast. And with the regime in Tehran considering the United States to be the Great Satan, what’s to stop them from attempting to use a nuclear weapon here?

Shame on the media for making Benjamin Netanyahu or his graphics the issue.

The reason they make fun of

The reason they make fun of his illustration is because they must create the diversion. They must prevent you from concentrating on the important issue. It is all smoke and mirrors illusions. They must keep people sitting back in their recliners saying "Awwww, it's the same ol stuff, different day. Nothing is going to happen." As Ezekiel 38 states; They that dwell safely, all of them dwelling safely without walls. When people are sitting around doing nothing, thats when sudden destruction comes upon them.

"The Obama administration says a nuclear-armed Iran is unacceptable. But in putting up even an unsophisticated drawing at the United Nations, Mr. Netanyahu appears to have done more about the problem than the current U.S. administration."

The Obama administration also says they want us to be independent of foreign oil. Yet, every bill they pass makes us more dependent. They banned offshore drilling for US companies but allow Brazil to come in and drill OUR oil. They stopped the keystone pipeline because Warren Buffett (committed liberal) owns the railroad (Berkshire Hathaway) that transports the oil from Canada to Texas. And the liberal Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson helped stop the bill. Why? Maybe because he owns 6 million shares of Berkshire Hathaway Railroad. Also, maybe because Warren Buffett has contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to his campaign.

So, something that would have save the common people money, by reducing the price of getting oil from Canada to Texas, gets shot down by biased politicians. All the while hiding behind enviromental reasons!! This administration has done EVERYTHING they can to weaken America and make our enemies stronger. We even reduced our nuclear weapons, while no other Country did so in that agreement.

I've said before and will repeat here; Liberals want us to look at a rattlesnake and see a cute puppy dog or look at a radical islamist and see a founding father. Don't believe what you see, believe what they tell you is reality!!

My grandfather had some good advice years ago; He always said "You can tell a persons character by the friends they keep." and "You can always tell who you should vote for by the people who are backing the candidates." Recently Hugo Chavez came out saying if he could vote in this Novembers election, he would vote for Obama. Well.......THATS ENOUGH FOR ME!!!!!

The truth is that the press

The truth is that the press has done NOTHING to keep the American people informed. The US Ambassador in Libya was killed (the first since 1972). The Embassy in Libya was destroyed and the US has pulled it Embassy personnel out of Libya. The situation is so bad that the FBI hasn't been able to go there and investigate. The Embassy didn't have adequate security and was not fortified adequately. The result of the Embassy attack is the loss of CIA assets in the region. Obama's Muslim initiative is burning before our eyes. Obama (yes personally) and this administration lies to the American people. Obama calls th death of the Ambassador a road bump. The press looks the other way and covers it up. 8% unemployment and a lot of economic indicators seem to point to a new recession approaching. The press focuses on a 6 month old video of Romney as a distraction. Will Univision did a report on Fast and Furious and connected the guns to the death of dozens of children in Mexico and connects 57 more weapons to Fast and Furious used in in crimes in Mexico that weren't even reported to congress. Univison, doing the job American Journ-o-lists won't. Columnists are writing about Romney's bad month! why should the press cover anything negative about Obama? When the Iranians set off a nuclear weapon Obama will discuss Romney's hair and the press will make that the issue of supreme importances at the moment!

Another example of Obama's

Another example of Obama's lawlessness and the presses ignoring Obama's misteps, gaffs and follies. The Obama administration has pressured Lockheed Martin to delay lay off announcements that are REQUIRED BY LAW until after Dec. Where is the press? Why isn't this as big a deal as Romney's 6 month old video? I thought breaking the law or collusion to break the law was a big deal, a federal law no less!

America's Haters

Very good comments, myfather and carcraft! Your granfather was correct, my father. When I met my husband, he voted democrat. The first thing I said to him was, "why would you vote for people that these organizations and people support?(I named off everyone of them I could think of). So, this next election will be his third one to vote the "right" way. Iran truly is a stick of dynamite, they want to do something to Israel or to us, so badly. It's just too bad they have some power by letting it be known they are a possible nuclear threat. The one thing they are definitely wrong about is, America is not the great satan! But, they are so steeped into their religion and hatred, they will never see who and what this great country is........... Don't forget myfather, we can handle those serpents...............................

War on Capitalism

Agree about the one sided press. It’s similar to a corporation that does ANYTHING beneficial, it will be attacked by Democrats and media as somehow taking advantage of the middle class. In North Dakota shale oil country, due to the fracking process, a monumental economic boom is taking place in addition to supply the country with needed energy. Spin-off businesses and jobs are being created on a scale that government couldn’t do with one stimulus after another. The state has 200 rigs pumping 440,000 barrels of oil daily in the Bakken shale formation, according to the Heartland Institute. The state’s unemployment rate is just 3.5 percent, with many oil industry jobs paying more than $100,000. There are 18,000 job openings.

There is nothing like the power of capitalism to uplift the lower and middle classes. But are the corporations accomplishing the economic miracle praised by the government? Nope, they are demonized by the press and threatened by Obama. The EPA, through presidential fiat, is deciding whether the whole process is “environmental friendly.”

A very shallow analysis. Have we not learned ANYTHING from the the Iraq experience ? We should not have foreign leaders dictate our foreign policy. The Prime Minister 's flawed views are not even supported by his military and intelligence establishments. The theatrics at the UN cannot cloud our judgement, and war should be a last resort.

You can read popular

You can read popular newspapers in Israel in English, and most editorials call Netanyahu a war hawk, who needs to calm down, overreacting, and needs to stay out of American elections.

And I agree. I don't know why this one foreign leader is allowed to have such sway and influence for a certain group of Americans. Why is there never a podium given to all the leaders of South America, about their desire to have a discussion about the drug war- which harms people as well.

What's worse- Israel won't let inspectors to look at their stockpile, production and other things- but there is a drum for war against Iran?

But hey- for the people wanting to go into another war- I hope you are also asking for Americans to pay more in taxes. We should not borrow money from China. Raise taxes and pay for the war if it's that important.

Don't you know the new GOP

Don't you know the new GOP theory is to cut taxes when you go into war. That way you can scream to cut more entitlements because you're increasing the debt. "Starve the beast" has been their plan for around a couple of decades.

seriously??

MR needs to learn that in order to be taken seriously, he needs at least to sound serious. Here he wants to sound "big and bad," but his usual and obtrusive verbal tics get in the way.

"folks" check

"Really?" check

"Good grief" check

"Shame on" check

The only one you missed today, MR, is "So sad!"

Let's Listen to Netanyahu

Binyamin Netanyahu's concerns about a nuclear Iran are understandable; our nation's lack of concern isn't--especially since our embassies, unlike Israel's government offices, weren't ready to withstand the deadly riots this Sept. 11. How could anyone blame Israel if it knocks out Iran's reactors?

Our administration not only has done nothing, but also is pushing ahead with plans to continue foreign aid to Egypt and other Mideast hotspots. Let's hope the Republican-controlled House can restrain this madness until the White House is under new management.

Why do the peope who support

Why do the peope who support Obama think that this is just about Israel? Iran now has drones and greatly improved them (thanks to the one captured in Iran) and missiles that are very acurate. The country is ran by people that would be in a mental institution or on medication in most parts of the world. These lunitics don't respond to bluffs and actually believe they are part of Islamic end time prophacy. If Iran gets neuclear weapons they willl bully every one in the region and control world oil from the mid east.

Palestinian distraction worse than Netanyahu's

Bibi's got to appeal to the hard liners. Raise sand about Iran so you don't notice them stealing Palestinian land and building illegal settlements (Techfan).

Actually, life is better for Arabs in Israel than it is for ones in Palestine. The foreign aid given to Palestine has been staggering, yet it hasn't reached or helped the average citizens there. Yasser Arafat had untold millions, much of which was funneled to his wife, Shua, who lived lavishly in Paris.

Truth be told, Palestinians would be better off if Israel liberated them from the PLO.

how about talking...

How about we initiate a 'real' diplomatic conversation with Iran ? Before the hawkish neo-cons like this editorial flood the news run with the fear mongering that lead us into an immoral war in Iraq. Anyone remember the prelude " what’s to stop them from attempting to use a nuclear weapon here? " back in '02-03. Seams the Chronicle board kept that one in the library just in case they needed it again.

Netanyahu has been lying about Iran for 20 years.

He wrote a book in 1992 claiming they could have the bomb in a year or two.

Seriously, do you want all of us paying $10/gallon for gas, just to satisfy an unpopular crackpot of a foreign leader and the likes of Sheldon Adelson? And for what, because we favor one theocratic apartheid regime over another? Why aren't we calling on Israel to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty and submit to IAEA inspection, both of which Iran has done?

How about we re-channel our foreign aid

away from the nations that are at the very least allowing the killing of their own citizens because they aren't Muslim (you know, people like most of us Americans),

away from nations that vow to destroy US allies, and to destroy us if we attempt to intervene,

away from nations that lie to us and continue to support terrorism around the globe,

and, instead, give half of all of it to our allies "over there",

and put the rest toward Medicare for elderly who have contributed positively toward our nation's good,

and to retire our obscene national debt.

Faithson- What do you think

Faithson- What do you think Obama’s foreign policy toward Iran has been for the past 4 years? Obama has increased sanctions, ignored by Russia and attempted negotiations, all to no avail. Obama was warned this would not work but Obama thinks he is so wonderful it could not fail. Now Iran is closer to nukes than ever before. The leaders of Iran are crazy and part of their government official position is denial of the Holocaust. http://articles.cnn.com/2012-08-30/middleeast/world_meast_iran-khamenei-... Iran believes they have an important role in Islamic end time prophesy. www.bibleprophecyblog.com/2012/09/ahmadinejad-includes-shiite-end-times.... I know this isn’t going to be a great source but you can bet your bottom dollar the “main stream media” won’t report on this! So how do you negotiate with nut jobs like this in any meaningfully way?

EEL, Writing Changes

EEL, I believe writing has tremendously changed to a more informal style. The Internet has had a lot to do with it. Writing now is more immediate and is not made with a feather and ink on sheepskin where the letters are filled in using calligraphic style.

Editorials I read from other papers and places are similar in this immediate style. Language would be expected to be different in 2012 than in 1950. It may be whoever wrote this column is right in the middle of the pack with today's editorialists. Ya know? LOL.

foreign policy????

I really have to laugh. Whatever happened to "all economy, all the time?"
Maybe it has something to do with this: "A new Gallup Poll finds that more Americans by a wide margin think middle class earners will be in better shape after four years of Barack Obama than four years of Romney."

What's left? Maybe Romney can campaign to return to the gold standard???

Editorials

RV1: perhaps you are right about changing styles, but what does not change is that when a person in a position of trust and authority (editorial editor of an important regional paper) wants to be taken seriously, he or she should sound serious. The "dumbing down" of internet or journalistic writing, the more accurate term for what you euphemistically call informality, puts that discourse only one small step about the 30 second soundbite. Serious and cute don't equate.
