A manufactured 'right'

Sandra Fluke represents another red-herring election distraction

  • Follow Editorials

With the economy stalled and the “hope” posters fading on the bedroom walls, Democrats have tried to make this election about anything and everything else. Mitt Romney’s taxes. Mitt Romney’s (considerable) business experience. Mitt Romney’s dog.

But the most inane, laughable red herring is the narrative that taxpayers somehow owe women free contraceptives – and if we don’t provide them, there’s a “war on women.”

This seemed to Democrats to be such a promising hoax that they elevated a frustrated 30-something law student, Sandra Fluke, not only to the level of congressional testimony but to a prime-time national convention speech normally accorded to the likes of governors and senators. The president of the United States even took time to call her on the phone at one point this year.

It tells you plenty about the state of this Union when a major party does something like that – and most of the media don’t bat an eye, except in admiration.

Before we replace Susan B. Anthony’s statue with Sandra Fluke’s, though, let’s get some perspective here.

This woman is not fighting for some civil right such as suffrage. She’s touting a wholly new and imaginary government obligation to finance her sex life with free contraceptives.

Now, America is the land of the free, certainly, and Ms. Fluke and those like her are free to live any which way is legal, whatever the hazards. It’s the legacy of the “free love” generation, one supposes. But let’s be clear about this: There is no constitutional or civil right to “free sex.”

Moreover, requiring that tax money be taken from one person and given to another for such use is, itself, highly immoral and offensive.

Just understand that, no matter what you see coming from the Democratic Party, you have no obligation to pay for someone else’s consequence-free sex. Fact is, you have a good argument against your money and you being treated that way.

That a major American political party is postulating such a bogus “civil right,” and the media and large swaths of the public are buying it, says much about the likely future course of this country.

Nothing good, however.

This is the way you want to get your candidate elected? Vote for Mitt Romney because Sandra Fluke is a slut? Please guys, don't denigrate yourselves and stoop to Limbaugh-style tactics. It's kind of pathetic.

I wonder how many women

I wonder how many women voters the Chronicle Staff won over to Republicans with this screed?

Keep up the good work there Mr. Ryan et al. You certainly are the Democrats very special freinds.

Meanwhile more good family values Conservatism at work in Virginia. And, hate mongers like Michael Savage declare "Liberalism" a mental illness? Geez Louise!

Report: Man Who Was 'Tortured' by the Prospect of Obama's Re-Election Kills Family, Self
A tragic consequence of mental illness and the right's routine demonization of Democratic presidents.
September 28, 2012 |

The Right has painted a potential second term under Obama in apocalyptic terms. Fox News host Sean Hannity said that "if Obama is re-elected, it's the end of America as we know it." Pastor John Hagee, calling for 40 days of prayer for Mitt Romney, insisted that "Four more years of Obama will bring absolute socialism to America. Our children and grandchildren will never know the greatness of America that we have experienced." A full-page ad that ran in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune blared that Obama would "force employers to give illegal immigrants the jobs of U.S. citizens," "force courts to accept Sharia law" and "force doctors to assist homosexuals in buying surrogate babies," among other outrages. And the popular "documentary" (it's fiction), "2016: Obama's America" paints a dystopian vision of a country bled dry by Obama's supposed obsession with global wealth redistribution.

People who are in good mental health -- even conservatives who despise Obama -- are able to separate feverish projections from current reality. But what about those who are suffering from mental illnesses?

The Daily Mail reports that one such man -- a defense contractor who has a history of paranoia and depression, according to the report -- did the unthinkable this week, returning from prayers at his church and killing his wife and two sons before turning the gun on himself. Here's an excerpt from the Daily Mail story:

Albert Peterson shot dead his wife and two sons hours after going to church because he dreaded the thought of Obama winning the election, a family friend has revealed.

A confidante of the family for the past 25 years has spoken to MailOnline about the strength and grace of the Peterson family, as well as the torment that plagued Albert which drove him to shoot dead his wife Kathleen and his two sons Christopher and Mathew at their suburban home in DC on Sunday.

A history of mental illness, the loss of a dear uncle, and a growing fear of Obama winning a second term in the White House took its toll on the mind of Mr Peterson, a wealthy defense contractor, the friend said.

'He just did not want his kids inheriting this mess,' Maggie L, who did not wish to reveal her last name, told MailOnline. 'Sometimes we thought he might take his own life when he was so depressed. We never thought he would take Kathie's.'

....Albert, 57, Kathleen, 52, Matthew, 16, and Christopher, 13, were found Tuesday just after noon inside their home in Herndon, Virgina. Co-workers reported to police that they were concerned that Mr and Mrs Peterson had not reported to work for the past two days.

Mr Peterson was a defense contractor and Mrs Peterson worked at Blackbird Technologies, a company that specializes in defense, law enforcement and intelligence work.

Chris was an eighth grader at Rachel Carson Middle School and Matthew was a sophomore at Westfield High School. Both were avid soccer players and active at their church.

The preliminary police investigation indicates that Albert Peterson killed his wife and their children before taking his own life. Each of the deceased died of gunshot wounds to the upper body.

...Recently, Mr Peterson began writing paranoid emails to his friends and family about politics on a daily basis, sometimes even more frequently, Maggie said.

'I got emails and the emails stopped all of a sudden last week,' Maggie said. 'He felt that our God-given rights were being taken away. He didn't like where the country was going.'

So he shot and killed his entire family.

I agree with the previous posts.

No wonder the GOP is doing so poorly this election.

And by the way, Ms. Fluke wasn't concerned about her sex life. Birth control has uses outside of preventing pregnancy.

But don't let that stop you from helping nudge Obama back into the White House.

Retired, you have stooped to

Retired, you have stooped to the lowest, most disgusting level I have ever seen. What you've posted here is disgraceful and you should be ashamed. No, I won't flag you, I'll just tell you what I think about this disgusting post. Its clear to any Senseable human being that this man was mentally ill and it had nothing to do with Obama, or politics in general. I worked many suicides personally and I'm just shocked you would put such a comment out in a political article. Leave that family alone when trying to further a disgusting agenda!!! There was obviously something serious going on in this mans head. He couldn't possibly dislike Obama any more than I do but I certainly wouldn't resort to taking the lives of my family. I just can't believe ANYONE would post or repost such a comment for making a political point. Is there honestly no limits to how far the left will go to further their agenda???

Now, back to the topic.....

"Moreover, requiring that tax money be taken from one person and given to another for such use is, itself, highly immoral and offensive."

It's not only immoral and offensive, it should be criminal!!! The elected officials are truly going WAY past their authority!!! This Country was never intended to give them this type of power. WOW!!!

Nope, of course liberals will make fun of those on the right who would say we are headed towards socialism. They must deny it, until the point it's too late to turn around. We are getting close to that point because many communists are coming out today and proudly announcing their communism. There was a time in this Country if you admitted you were communist, people wouldn't exactly be accepting of those views. They see the tides changing and are now embolden to "come out".

As I've said many times. Liberals want you to look at an elephant and see a zebra. They want you to look at a radical islamist and see a founding father. They don't want you to believe what you SEE, they just want you to believe what they tell you!! There are ACTUAL members of the radical Muslim Brotherhood that are advisors to this White House and have access to the White House daily. The new Epyptian President is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. He has (recently) stated that "Jihad is the goal" and they will not honor the past treaties with Israel. That is THEIR OWN WORDS, not mine or any right winger!! But you ask a Liberal and they will tell you the Muslim Brotherhood is a peaceful organization that is "mostly secular". Doesn't the name (muslim) itself, prove it isn't secular!!! Elephant/zebra, Radical islamist/founding father!!

WE HAVE THE FINAL VICTORY!! Just remember that.

My guesses are nutcase Islamaphobe Michele Bachmann or nutcase Islamaphobe Pamela Gellar. There is an outside chance it's the nutcase's nutcase and the Islamaphobe's Islamaphobe, Glenn Beck. I have no doubt there are

I have no doubt there are probably some Muslims working for the US government since, 1: There are around 308 million Americans so the odds are in favor of it. 2. Unless the American Taliban (aka: right wing radical "christians") takes over and requires a religious oath for holding an office or working, the US is a free country.

TECH FAN - If the religious people are so hateful.

They would take up collections for Abortions and pass out contraceptives.

After all, based on your beliefs of these people, it would only be hurting the side that would use them, correct? Think about it would not the side using the items dramatically reduce their numbers. Which side would that be?

In fact, I would go so far as to say the religious right's efforts are indirectly saving liberalism from becoming extinct.

There is a big difference

There is a big difference between an insurance company covering Viagra and being required to provide birth control for free for women. Men have to still pay a rather large price to buy viagra, when insurance companies do cover it and many are not.

We pay one way or the other

To my Rep. friends....we will either pay for some type of birth control or pay for schools-food-housing-cells-hairdos-nails....please rethink this...
I just read that the schools in Cobb & Gwinnett county will have thousands of more kids than they have allotted to hold...GEEZ--well now---some will have 56 kids in a room til they figure out how this happened....duh duhduh....try to guess ....
This influx will cost $$$$.....it seems many come out of the woodwork when school time comes around.....we are so blind to think we can stop young folks from having sex..IT AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN!

We know how you feel about abortion,

so why aren't you in favor of helping women avoid the choice? And why can't conservatives do the simple cost-benefit analysis of promoting a healthier future tax base? Universal contraception would be relatively cheap for a social program, and I'd much rather see my tax dollars applied to that than more drone strikes against Pakistani wedding parties.

SeenitB4, those schools are

SeenitB4, those schools are so overcrowded because of illegal Mexican immigrants. I know because my nephews in Gwinnett County attended such a school. The youngest one dropped out his senior year to be home schooled because he didn't speak Spanish and he was tired of being terrorized by the Mexican gangs that dominated his school.

It has for a long time. It is a major point of "immigration to Los Estados Unidos" and distribution of illegal emigrants (not illegal in the sense of violating laws).

I'm with myfather here, that post about the suicide is the product of a sick mind. an ignorant and illiterate conglomerate of personalities. If you look at graduation rates of the left, they are considerably under 50%. The right isn't much better but at least they have an inner drive to be successful on their OWN, unlike the left who require financial assistance in housing, eating, driving (without photo ID of course), welfare checks, aid for dependent children, and as mentioned above contraception. The left enjoys a sense of entitlement based on obama's, reids, pelosi's, schumer's, frank's, dodd's, rangel's, jackson-lee's, jealous's, and etc.,etc., etc's., studies of marxism. They believe themselves entitled under the Robin Hood act ( steal from the rich and give some to the poor but give more the the leftie rich). These inane comments from lefties on this comments section are prime examples of the insanely blind leading the the uneducated blind. Have a wonderful day.

No one is asking for free

No one is asking for free contraception. Women are asking it be part of their health care plan. They are paying for health care- they would like health care involved.

And are we still having this conversation? Do people not know birth control has other benefits than getting knocked up?

Tparty says "No one is asking

Tparty says "No one is asking for free contraception. Women are asking it be part of their health care plan. They are paying for health care- they would like health care involved. “An employer choses health care plans depending on multitude of factors. Health care plans have been an incentive for workers to work for companies since the government froze salaries during WWII. The employer pays for most of the cost of health insurance. With all the add ons forced into insurance from Obama care the cost in premiums have skyrocketed and Richmond County is trying to self-insure as a way of controlling costs! Private contractors that need health insurance are wondering how they are going to pay the cost, Now the question for Tparty- what gives the government the right to force an organization to pay for contraception when it violates their religious liberty? If an employer provides a car for his employees that work as salesman can the federal government say you have to buy Chevy Volts? After all green is better for the planet besides you would be helping the big labor unions that help keep me in office! We are coming to that point. If Obama wins he will take out his pen and issue excutive oders and when they violate your beliefs it will be too late!

Wow !

Muslim Brotherhood in the White House daily? Demanding free condoms? Really? Did you ever actually watch Sandra Flukes testimony? How can the right possibly ever form an intelligent and balanced understanding of what is happening when your only sources are "mostly" self-reinforcing obfuscations, distortions and outright lies? As for me, I make the effort, as vexxing as it may be, to review a variety of sources in order to gain an understanding of how all of my neighbors form their opinions.
My reading of this newspaper being an example of my desire for such understanding. It's certainly not only for the opportunity to spar with you folks.

And finally...Retired Army, I am deeply saddend to read these personal attacks upon you. Just the other day, someone actually accused you of not caring because you "had your entitlements". Really? Now we're attacking our retired warriors and defenders of the American Way, simply because they dare to post their opinions on a public forum?

Myfather 15- The liberals

Myfather 15- The liberals really don't understand mental illness- People that shoot Senators like Gifford in Arizona are right wing sympathizers until proven otherwise. People that shoot up a movie and have the same name as a T-party individual are automatically a member of the T-party. Being mentally ill simply is another way to stigmatize the conservatives in America. It actually has nothing to do with mental illness and a dysfunctional brain or thought process!

Supporters of the Muslim

Supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood have gone to the White House and are having meetings with Obama. Please read Michele Milken’s column that was in the paper the other day. She lays it out pretty clearly. Of course people will say that she is not accurate. If so please disprove her. You will not read about it in the lame stream media. I looked at the article today about the death of Ambassador Stevens in Libya. The White House now admittes it was a terrorist act. So the Question is (not asked by the lame stream media) why did you come out with a Cock and Bull story in the first place? Why not just say we didn’t now? Because the truth is Obama is incompetent and the lame stream media knows he is incompetent and is covering for him. So don’t expect that question to be brought up. The LA times is sitting on video of Obama with Kalidi Mohammad of National Islam fame. http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/226104/i-l-times-i-suppresses-oba... Of course this will never see the light of day, but if there was a video of Romney talking about changing marriage laws so he could have 15 wives it would be broadcast nationally. This just demonstrates more of the media bias.

Insurance and Contraceprion

I have no problem with insurance companies covering a portion of the costs for contraceptives. The social benefits to our entire population are obvious. What I do have a problem with is our insurance payments skyrocketing because customers continue to abuse alchol, tobacco and fatty/salty foods. That indulgent behavior is what is trully immoral. And those costs are killing the rest of us.

Living in a free country I think empolyers have a right to decide if they will provide contraception coverage or not. The govenment isn't paying the cost so they should have no say. Contraception isn't that expensive (nine to 30/ month) and ir you can't afford that so whould abstain from sex!

Reminds me of the dressing room demands of entertainers. You know how some performers demand outrageous things for their dressing room as part of the contract for them to perform? Bottle of champagne, flowers, etc.?

I wonder if Sandra Fluke demands a yellow or white pill in the dressing room depending on the day of the week if she speaks somewhere? Maybe a two pack of the Southern California football team's nickname?
