Don't miss voting in today's important runoff election

  • Follow Editorials

This November’s will be one of the most important elections in modern American history.

Today’s election, though, will be one of the most important in Richmond County’s.

Today is the runoff election that will most likely decide who Augusta’s next sheriff will be.

That office sets the tone for everything else that goes on in this community; nothing gets off the ground or long survives without the peace that security provides. And as blaring as the headlines can be, we’ve been spoiled in this area by a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office that has been superbly run by retiring Sheriff Ronnie Strength.

It’s essential that voters come out again and vote for Capt. Scott Peebles on the Democratic ballot. Even if you’re a Republican, unless you voted on the Republican ballot July 31, you can come out today and vote for Peebles for sheriff. And if you voted for Peebles then, you need to do so again. Even if you didn’t vote at all July 31, or chose a “nonpartisan” ballot that day, you can vote Democratic today.

“Elections don’t get any bigger than this,” Mayor Deke Copenhaver said in a televised endorsement of Peebles. “Choosing the right candidate is a must. Scott Peebles is hands-down the man for the job.”

If you voted on the Republican ballot July 31, you can still vote for Rick W. Allen for Congress, and we urge you to do so.

It’s summer, and this election may not come with a lot of buzz. But it’s one of the most important in memory. And because turnout is expected to be low, in the 20-percent range, your vote will count as much as it ever has.

Please take one minute – that’s about what it will require – to vote today.

Only we can determine the kind of community we want. You can do it today.

Vote for Captain Peebles Today

Those who did or didn’t vote on July 31st need to exercise their right to vote in the democratic primary runoff today. Peebles is the best man for the job and he needs our support today. He has been on the job at the RCSO for 21 years serving and helping us so today it is our turn to help him. Vote Peebles for Sheriff today and encourage your friends to do the same. How you vote today does not affect how you vote in November and anytime you are given an opportunity to vote, you should exercise your right that so many have fought so hard to secure. Peebles for Sheriff!!

Where Will The Chicken Be Passed Out Today

Where are THEY passing out the fried chicken today? A vote for Nicholson-Blanchard-Peebles means a chicken in every pot. Just wipe your hands with a napkin to get the schmaltz (chicken fat) off before you vote.

Peebles is our choice

The RCSO is fully behind Peebles, simply go to visit his website and see or for those of you who know any of us, you can look at our personal FB pages. Over 200 deputies have joined the Peebles FB page and are actively supporting him because we know he is the best candidate. And btw, we also support Lt. Blanchard as most of us work with him since he is the Assistant Coordinator for the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for our region. He has always and continues to have the best interest of Augusta and the RCSO, is a fine officer and great person. Peebles has served this county for 21 years consecutively and will make a great Sheriff so please go vote for Captain Peebles today as our Sheriff.

I also know Freddie Sanders and he is a good man. He also speaks very highly of Captain Peebles and has done so publicly just as I have heard Captain Peebles speak of him. Mr. Sanders is not running for election today, Scott Peebles is and he needs our support.

Joe Jackson Give Anymore?

All we need is Joe Jackson coming up with some more money to contribute to Peebles. I hope he finds some to give to Chief Freddie Sanders in November.

Lewis Blanchard

The last I heard about Lewis Blanchard, he was the school crossing guy at Lakeside, now he's a "Lieutenant" and the Assistant Coordinator for the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for our region? Heh.

Does he already have an office picked out at the RCSO?

Peebles Using Bullhorn Tonight?

After the primary Peebles used a bullhorn to speak in a small room to his crowd. It does wonders for speech. It hides the "s" sound coming out like the "th" sound. I wonder if he will use that if he's elected when he talks to the news people on camera? You know just pull out the folding bullhorn and shout at the camera real loud like it's a fugitive in a bank robbery a few hundred yards away. It does help him be heard clearly.

Rick Allen for Congress

Rick Allen for Congress. I was a Wright McLeod supporter, but now that he's out I'm supporing Rick Allen. It's time to get rid of Lee Anderson's, good ole boys' network.

Sanders is a great man, but

Sanders is a great man, but won't have a chance in November against Peebles or Roundtree. The winner of today will be the next Sheriff of RC.

Does the RCSO Health Insurance Cover Speech Therapy

Does the health insurance of the RCSO provide for treatments of speech pathology for those who lisp? Communicating with the public is important we all know. I'll listen to a certain candidate speak tonight and try to keep a straight face.

About Blanchard Being the Assistant Coordinator

Funny how things come full circle. Guess who the actual Coordinator for the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety for our region is?

Yep, that same Sgt. David Hannah of the Waynesboro Police Department involved with the phony endorsement using the organization's name. Now tell me Hannah and Blanchard are not two peas in a pod. Wake up, folks.

On this day in 2012, I thank my spouse, who worked for the City of Augusta for a period of time in a fairly high position in the early 70's that I don't live in Richmond County. Wanted very much to move to the river in the late 80's. He was not enthusiastic.

Thanks for the thumbs down.

Thanks for the thumbs down. It added to my points, not that I give a rat's whatever. The points thing is a curiosity to me. Sometimes I hit a thumbs up and the poster gets 2 points. Sometimes I hit thumbs down and the poster gets 1 up and 2 down.
