Depths of Obama camp's mudslinging grow in presidential race

  • Follow Editorials

There’s an incalculable amount at stake in this November’s elections. Nothing less than the future course of America is up for grabs.

But at the very least, the future of presidential politics will be decided.

It has become painfully clear that the Obama campaign and its surrogates will stop at nothing to retain power. Nothing. Not lies, not distortions, not the worst sort of toxic sludge, the likes of which even the bareknuckle sport of presidential politics has never seen.

Since we noted last week Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s reckless and scurrilous allegation that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney might not have paid taxes for a decade – there’s absolutely no evidence to support it – Reid’s office has been caught telling tales about the episode.

After failing to back up Reid’s charges for days, his aide Jose Parra, in the course of one day last week, gave details about their alleged source for the accusation against Romney – then completely, utterly denied those details before the cock crowed.

Parra initially said the alleged source was a Republican investor in Romney’s old company of Bain Capital “who has been dealing with Romney’s company for a long, long time.” Actually, he had to admit later the same day, “I do not know the party affiliation of the source, how long he invested with Bain, or his relationship to Romney ...”

Oops! So everything he said was a lie. And all we “know” is that Reid’s unnamed source fogs a mirror. If there is such a person in the first place. Nice. But not exactly the kind of corroboration you’d like to have when smearing a candidate running for the White House.

The word “reprehensible” comes to mind.

Except that now we have to find a stronger word for the other Obama outrage of the week.

A television ad by a pro-Obama political action committee nearly accuses Romney of killing a woman with cancer. Her husband, it seems, once worked for a company shuttered by Bain, and his insurance was lost.

Nearly every national media outlet has decried the ad as dishonest and sleazy. Turns out the woman actually had insurance elsewhere; that the company where her husband worked was shut down years after Romney had left Bain; and her diagnosis came much later too.

In addition, as noted in the Los Angeles Times, it’s not as if Bain shut down GST Steel in Kansas City as an act of evil profiteering: The previous owners had been losing their shirts too, and, “The steel industry in the United States was shedding jobs profusely in the 1980s and 1990s, as foreign competition was upending American manufacturers.”

Meanwhile, the Obama campaign was caught red-handed lying through its collective teeth about its knowledge of the bogus PAC ad. The Obama folks initially denied any knowledge whatsover – before audio leaked out that proved they, themselves, had previously worked hand-in-hand with the man in the PAC ad.

So they try to smear Mitt Romney with a pack of lies, and then try to lie their way out of it.

God help this nation if people of this sort are rewarded with victory in November.

Democrats Won't Present Budget

Paul Ryan on the ticket puts the focus on the economy and debt. Democrats will use the same lying scare tactics on him, but the truth is the Democratic Senate has not adopted a budget resolution since April 29, 2009. They won't present a budget because they know cuts have to be made and they don't want to make them. They know cuts of any kind anger their base of dependent people. Whoever heard of a Senate that won't even present a budget?

The interest alone on the national debt will be about 40% of our total expenditures in a decade. If Romney-Ryan don't win and the "no budget" Democrats keep the presidency and Senate, checks are going to start bouncing soon enough.

Depths of Obama camp's mudslinging?

"The governor of Hawaii is a big fan of Barack Obama. They're apparently friends. He's certain the president was born in Hawaii. He desperately wants to prove it. He wants the questions to go away.

After months of effort, he can't.

And he's the governor!

Now the controversy over Obama's birthplace -- long considered a fringe issue, but which won't go away -- is casting a shadow over the 2012 election: As many as 10 states, including Georgia, are considering laws requiring proof of citizenship to be on the presidential ballot.

Why not? You have to produce a birth certificate to get a learner's permit in Georgia. Why not have to produce one to become president?

Having been born here, being a resident for 14 years and being at least 35 -- that's all that's required by the Constitution to be president. It isn't too awful much to ask folks to prove they qualify.

Whatever he thinks of the controversy -- and his spokesman has intimated that skeptics of his citizenship are irrational -- one would think Mr. Obama would want to produce that evidence. With Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie's frustrating inability to unearth it, perhaps Mr. Obama is the only one who can bring an end to the distraction.

When even supporters who have "Governor" on their business card can't come up with the proof, it starts becoming highly rational to question things.

Mr. Obama certainly doesn't want that. The issue has already caused him to lose trust in some quarters. If one questions the president's veracity in such a fundamental thing as where he was born, can one go anywhere good from there?

The president's own behavior early on made some question him -- his odd hesitation to wear an American flag lapel pin, for instance. His repeated apologies for America to foreign audiences also rankled many.

He has put many of those questions behind him. It's time to add this one to the list. If no one else can, it's time the president trotted out his birth certificate.

We have no reason to doubt the president's word that he's a native-born American.

Why give us one?"

When you have doubled the debt, have 15% (actual) unemployment), don't have a budget, and don't have a plan.....about the only thing you can do is go to the mud hole and wallow.

Not to mention the fact that Obama's taxpayer funded green energy compainies have had more bankruptcies, and funded more jobs overseas, than Bain Capital ever thought about. The difference is that Bain made money for their investors and Obama just threw our money away.

"As many as 10 states,

"As many as 10 states, including Georgia, are considering laws requiring proof of citizenship to be on the presidential ballot."

Where do people come up with this nonsense? A state cannot pass a proof of citizenship law for Federal elections- that would require a Consitutional amendment.

As for not wearing a lapel pin- what's next, a Constitutional amendment that says Presidential candidates must wear a lapel pin? Who cares if he wears a lapel pin or not?

Maybe he thinks like I do- the American flag isn't meant to be jewelry, isn't meant to be part of clothing, people have given their lives for that flag.

With all the serious problems in this country that exist- and people are focused on lapel pins. Maybe that's why there are such serious problems, because people waste their time on meaningless stuff.

And I am wondering why all the birthers that are so concerned about Obama's birth certificate are so silent on Romney's refusal to release his tax returns. They are curiously mum about THAT. Why doesn't he want to release them? What does he have to hide?

What is also surprising to me is that so many people are also silent about the Tea Party candidates- who promised sweeping changes, blah, blah, blah, and who haven't don't diddly squat to change a thing. I'm still waiting for those changes. Why don't people care about that?

I would like the ACES to write an editorial detailing all the changes that the Tea Party has made. I truly am interested to know. Because from where I sit, they haven't done a thing. They, too, are a bunch of lying windbag politicians that say what people want to hear to get elected, and then do nothing. They are just like all the rest of them.

Anybody but Obama!

I would vote for Ricardo Azziz or Rosie O'Donnell if either were running against B.O. I consider it fairly easy for an intelligent person to see through many of the lies that politicos throw around. However, right now, I want our government to adopt a reasonal budget and tighten down on the checkbook.

Why do the voters keep re-electing people like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid (and a few of our own in Georgia)? And yes, this is a rhetorical question -- the answer is simple. Bacon, Bacon, Bacon!

Corigmom, actually all

Corigmom, actually all elections are local and the certification for each canidate is given by the secratery of each state. Obama could not have appeared in one state's primary if the election supervisors had realized that the names on the petition to get him on the ballot had been forged! http://www.southbendtribune.com/news/specialreports/sbt-primary-forgery-...

Tell a lie often enough and people will believe it

Car: You know that has been proven an error, yet you continue to post it. Why? “You’re undoubtedly aware of the brouhaha stirred up by Breitbart about the erroneous statement in a client list Acton & Dystel published in 1991 (for circulation within the publishing industry only) that Barack Obama was born in Kenya. This was nothing more than a fact checking error by me — an agency assistant at the time. There was never any information given to us by Obama in any of his correspondence or other communications suggesting in any way that he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii. I hope you can communicate to your readers that this was a simple mistake and nothing more.” Miriam Goderich

Let the mud sling and let the

Let the mud sling and let the voter decide what is true and what is not. This is an everything goes campaign. No one has complained when the highest elected official in the land is shown disrespect. He can't even give the State Of the Union address without some ignorant nut case from S.C. showing disrespect for the highest office in the land. No president in history has been treated with this type of disrespect. Maybe that's why he plays hardball. He has been pushed into a corner. There are some who just don't want this president to go in the history books along with Obama Care, because it is the biggest thing since the new deal. Give yourself credit because Rush and others gave it this name trying to mock this sweeping change. Look like the name stuck and now you want to complain. Republicans and tea party members claim to be big supporters of the Constitution, but no where does the Consttution say you have to show a transcript to run for president. It doesn't even say you have to be a high school graduate, let alone, produce a transcript.
I was surprise about the Ryan pick, I wanted Sarah again. I don't think seniors will tolerate his budget once the ads expose what he proposes.
I guess all the other potential candidated for VP turned him down. Well, I need to crank up the Obama train because I will be coming through your neighborhood soon knocking on your door and letting you get on board while there is still room. I guess the GOP convention will just be another
boring event again this year. TOOT! TOOT!. I'm coming around the bend.

Romney does not need to respond to Harry Reid's despicable and desperate challenge. Obama must be turned out of office. Romney's tax returns should be a private matter. Don't you prefer for your tax returns to be private, Grouse?

Burden of proof...

As with any legal issue, the burden of proof is on the accuser to prove GUILT, not the accused to prove innocence! That is the whole point of "innocent until proven guilty". One must acknowledge the fact that slinging of UNSUBSTANTIATED claims and accusations cause nearly as much harm to the accused as a conviction...in the realm of public opinion. If Reid, et al, can NOT substantiate their accusations and allegations, they should be censured for libel and/or slander.

It is, scientifically and statistically, impossible to prove a negative, but extremely simple to prove a fact! If Reid does have the "facts" behind him, show them!

We know Reid was lying when

We know Reid was lying when he says Romney didn't pay taxes for ten years because Romney has released 2 years of tax returns and paid taxes. Now that we have proven Reid a lier let Reid provide his proof Romney paid no taxes for ten years or sit down and shut up! Isn't this more fun than discussing trillion dollar deficits and their impact on Americans? Or maybe we should discuss Obama's lie about cutting deficits in half?

Paul Ryan is the Tea Party's

Paul Ryan is the Tea Party's darling and architect of the GOP's plan to destroy Medicare. Mitt Romney pandered to the extreme right and announced Paul Ryan as his pick for vice president, guranteeing that this election will be about tax cuts, Medicare, and the economy. Ryan is a rock star for Republicans, the lead archiet of the radical right - wing budget and jobs -killing tactics that Republicans are pushing in Congress. A budget that calls for huge new tax cuts for the super rich on top of extending the Bush tax cuts. Turning Medicare into a voucher program. Making massive cuts to vital programs like Medicaid,Social Security,Pell Grants, and job training. New increases in military spending - even as President Obama ends two wars. We can't count on the media or Augusta Chronicle to tell the truth, it's up to us to set the record straight.

Being upset because the Tea Party has not caused enough changes is understandable, but I assure you if they weren't there things would be much worse.

By the way are we ever going to see Obama's college records? Aren't college transcripts required for most jobs whereas tax records are not?
