Sheriff's stakes just went up

Strength endorses Peebles after missing chance to swing it his way

  • Follow Editorials

He didn’t endorse him until Wednesday afternoon. But – or, rather, because of that – no one may want Capt. Scott Peebles to win in the runoff race for sheriff more than sitting Sheriff Ronnie Strength.

In fact, Strength is banking on Peebles to win in the runoff.

“Absolutely I’m banking on it,” Strength said. “I promise you that.”

And no one will want Peebles’ runoff win more than Strength. Not even Peebles himself.

“Yeah, that’s right,” Strength acknowledged.

The reason: Strength firmly believes Peebles is an infinitely better candidate than rival Richard Roundtree. But Strength sat out Tuesday’s primary – choosing not to make an endorsement in that election because he had friends and family in it. His brother-in-law, Robbie Silas, was also on the Democratic ballot for sheriff. Running on the Republican side was Strength’s best friend, Freddie Sanders, who won his primary easily.

Now that the race is down to Peebles and Roundtree on the Democratic side, Strength is jumping in. Wednesday afternoon, Strength endorsed Peebles in an e-mail. One source also says Strength will endorse Peebles soon in taped “robo-calls” to county voters.

The upshot of all this is that Strength has as much riding on the runoff as Peebles does. Maybe more: If Peebles loses, he lives to fight another day. But if Roundtree ends up winning and goes on to victory in November, Strength and plenty of others may rue his decision to stay out of Tuesday’s primary.

Why? Because the numbers clearly suggest that an endorsement by Strength in the Tuesday election might have eliminated the need for any runoff: Peebles, in a four-way race, won nearly 47 percent of the vote. He needed only just over 50 percent to win outright.

In short, a strong endorsement from Strength might have swung the election Tuesday. Alas, we’ll never know.

Strength is confident Peebles will win in the runoff Aug. 21.

“He is the most qualified of the two candidates, beyond any doubt,” Strength told us Wednesday. “Anything can happen, granted. I think everybody’s going to see, between these two candidates, that Peebles is head and shoulders above Roundtree. I just do not believe the voters can be fooled on who’s the better candidate.”

He better hope he’s right. If he’s not, and Roundtree wins in November, folks will look back to Tuesday’s primary and wonder if Strength’s decision to sit it out for family reasons cost Peebles the outright win.

Strength insists he’s not kicking himself today – and expressed hope the decision to stay silent on Tuesday’s election won’t haunt him in November.

“I hope that when someone makes a decision and they feel confident it’s the right decision, everything else will fall into place,” he said.

That, of course, will be up to voters Aug. 21.

You are eligible to vote in the Democratic runoff if you voted Democratic on Tuesday – or if you voted “nonpartisan” or didn’t vote at all.

We urge everyone eligible to come back to the polls Aug. 21 and close the deal. It’s important we elect Scott Peebles, far and away the most qualified man for the job.

Just ask the sitting sheriff.

Peebles Needs Our Support on 8/21

Captain Peebles has learned well from one of the best Sheriff’s Augusta has had thus far. In addition to that, he brings forth his own philosophies and ideas for improving a good Sheriff's Department. Community policing is something this agency needs and Peebles not only believes in it but is the man to make it happen. National Accreditation is something not many Sheriff’s go for because it opens the entire office to continued reviews and ensures complete transparency. In fact, Sheriff Whittle of Columbia County changed his agency by implementing community oriented policing and National Accreditation and had this to say about accreditation: "I would not send my kids to a school or a hospital that was not accredited, and I think the citizens of Columbia County deserve the professional delivery of services by my office that is embodied by the CALEA standards.” His quote is even listed on the CALEA web site. A large majority within the RCSO from all ranks continue to show support for Peebles and now, even more are doing so. Many are making our support fully known on his Peebles for Sheriff FB page since leeway has been given regarding expressing opinions on the candidates. Both Silas and Ivey put their heart and soul into the race and deserve the appreciation of the community for their offer of service and so do their volunteers. Now, it is time to come together and support the most qualified and prepared leader for the Sheriff’s Office by voting Peebles in as our next Sheriff during early voting or on August 21st. If you didn’t vote yesterday or if you voted in the democratic primary your vote is really needed this month to make sure Peebles becomes our Sheriff. This race is extremely important for the entire CSRA so make sure you vote and help to make sure the county is well protected by electing Peebles.

Elect a straight-up,his-own-man, proud Republican who is not controlled by a dark side like Peebles with his handlers, Nicholson and Blanchard.

Who Will Greenbaum Support?

We keep hearing this thing about Ronnie Strength not supporting anyone for the primary, well, who is Lowell Greenbaum supporting for the run-off? Are the candidates courting his endorsement? Will he vet the two candidates left for the Democratic Party?

I am supporting Peebles. I

I am supporting Peebles. I did so on Tuesday and I will do again in the runoff. It is of imperative importance to this community that Peebles emerges from the Democratic primary. If the choice in November is between Peebles and Sanders, I think it is a win-win situation for the county. I have nothing but the utmost respect for Sanders and hold an extremely high opinion of both him and Peebles.

Transparency? Really? Wow, I gotta think about that statement coming from a SP supporter. Not denying the statement, just have toponder it.

No matter who endorsed

No matter who endorsed incompetent Scott Pebbles the result would have remain the same. Republicans voters jumped ship to voted for a wanna - be Democrat (Pebbles) slashed Republican and caused a run- off. How can Pebbles run as a Democrat and voted in the past presidential election for George W. Bush in 2004 and John McCain in 2008? Who want to elect a sheriff who is not honest? If you're telling little "white lies" about your party affliliation why should voters trust Pebbles to be Richmond County next Sheriff?

Vote Peebles

We supported him last time and will support him again in this run off. He is the best person for the job. Hotsauce nor anyone else know's how someone voted so there is no basis to that post. No matter what we should be voting for the best person for the job which is Peebles.

Another Point To The Chronicle

While we are playing this blame game about who is responsible for what, take a look at yourself when John Barrow wins this thing after all the encouraged crossover votes that helped defeat McLeod and made Lee Anderson the top vote getter.

Peebles running as a Democrat

Peebles running as a Democrat reminds me of the Chinese Badminton team playing a weak opponent.

You know how Republicans were told to crossover and vote on the Democratic ticket to support Peebles in a sort of Operation Chaos? Maybe it's time for Silas supporters to do their own Operation Chaos.

Play by the same rules...how honest are you?

hotsaucemom, By your own words, you disclosed in your opening sentence your disapproval and disrespect of Scott Peebles.

Then you proceed to discuss the matter of which ticket Peebles decided to run on.

When you don't like someone, you'll conjure up any justification to justify your position. I highly doubt it would matter to you whether Scott Peebles ran as a Democrat, a Republican, a Tea Party, or a Wash Tub.

River, how old was Mr. Ward

River, how old was Mr. Ward when he passed away? I would assume you could take that number and minus off for his childhood and schooling and you will have the length of time that the vast majority of local government and political partie(s) have shared an affiliation with him over the years. Is your question, to what degree is one's affiliation with him over another's?

RM is back at his smear tactics. Can't wait to see all of his tricks. I find most of them entertaining. He will have Peebles associated with the death of Elvis and Tupac before it's all over. Should be a fun two weeks!

Vote Peebles. Register as a Democrat, whatever. Play the game. Wasn't one of the questions on the ballot that the sheriff shouldn't have to claim a party anyway? "White lies" whatever, the two party system is a joke anyway.

Well, you know the truth to my point just as I do without me saying any names. If you didn't you wouldn't have said anything. That's the intellectual truth of this discussion. Even Austin has explained the strip clubs as an instrument of illegal activities. There have been federal prosecutions of players down there.

Willow, Bruno died in 2007. I'm talking about being partners in clubs. When the "business man" dies things don't stop going South.

Greenbaum Should Vet His Candidates

Lowell Greenbaum is head of the Democratic Party and should vet his candidates to ensure their statuses as liberal, socialist, share the wealth candidates are legit. The Columbia County Republican Party did a similar interview process with their candidates a few years ago to ensure their conservative principles. Silas Supporters, Operation Chaos.

Registration is not by party....

I could be wrong but I don't think you list a party when you register to vote in the State of GA. A law was enacted in the early 90's (?) making it illegal to ask a person for his party affiliation.

If that law is still in effect, then there is no such thing as a "crossover" vote, but rather a self-imposed decision.

Allhans, of course the

Allhans, of course the candidates have to declare whether they are Dems or Republicans. If you voted as a Democrat in the past primary for Peebles, you couldn’t have voted for the Republican Congressional candidate, but you knew that.

Here is how the Chronicle used the term: “The crossover trend hasn’t escaped the notice of Lowell Greenbaum, chairman of the Richmond County Democratic Party, who said the party is making sure its faithful aren’t skipping the primary.
“We don’t want the Republicans running our primary,” Greenbaum said.

Having Peebles as sheriff in charge of enforcing the law with the clubs in town, or whomever he appoints to that job (heh), is about like having Chipper Jones giving pre-marriage counseling at the church. (Silas Supporters: Operation Chaos)

I would heavily weigh the character and motivation behind any emails that were sent for the purpose of publicly destroying another person. I have personally received personnel files on people in the Sheriff's Dept. that I do not know and have no business or desire to see them. Why? Because I expressed support towards Scott Peebles online.

If someone knows of criminal actions that are not being properly addressed and known by local Law Enforcement, they should forward their concerns to the Dept. Of Justice. That is IF the goal is truly justice.

Willow, Think about this

No one has enough info to go to the feds or what have you, but that doesn't make certain relationships harmless or proper, especially where law enforcement is concerned. Should police officers hang around with Willie Sutton?

Did you get my email? I think you know my character is above board and truth is my only motivation.

We may sometimes doubt the exact facts

We may sometimes doubt the exact facts of relationships, but let’s not get into rationalization and justifying that these close connections with the shady strip club characters don’t matter. We have all recognized that family of associates down there and the danger they impose. If someone had told me before this election, such connections could be rationalized as being unimportant and it doesn’t mean anything if arrests aren’t made I would have thought they were using dialogue from the bad guys in Walking Tall.

Debate me on whether I have my facts right, but not on the importance of such associations. We're lost if people believe that. (Silas Supporters: Operation Chaos)
