The Peebles choice

Race issue needlessly injected into campaign for sheriff

  • Follow Editorials

Elephant, meet the rest of the room. Rest of the room, meet the elephant.

When several black law enforcement officers purporting to represent the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives endorsed white Richmond County Sheriff’s candidate Capt. Scott Peebles recently, it turns out they really didn’t – and couldn’t – speak for the organization: The national organization clamped down, saying the officers don’t represent the group and, after all, as a 501(c)(3) the organization can’t endorse political candidates.

The five Waynesboro police officers, including the respected Chief Alfonzo Williams, appear to have overstepped their bounds, and have apologized. But they’re not retracting their personal support for Peebles.

Good for them. They were guilty mainly of over-enthusiasm. Surely they can be forgiven for that, particularly since they believe they’re doing the right thing.

Interestingly, Charles Lyons, a lawyer for one of Peebles’ black opponents, Richard Roundtree, is on the warpath about it all – but he claims, “This controversy is not about race.”

Really? Didn’t you just make it about race?

The fact is, it’s an endorsement of Peebles by black officers that isn’t about race. They’ve seen a candidate whose qualifications are head and shoulders above his opponents’ – and they don’t care what the heck he looks like.

Yet, some folks – particularly the race hustlers in town, who see everything through the prism of skin color – would absolutely love for this tempest in a teapot, and the entire sheriff’s campaign, to be about race.

How dare any prominent blacks endorse a white candidate!

The truth is, race may be Roundtree’s main “qualification” for sheriff. He was a bust at the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office before mercifully leaving. He was demoted after inexplicably, recklessly and unprofessionally leaving boxes of murder files, SWAT gear and a personal firearm and ammunition in a residence he’d moved out of earlier.

Then, to shore up his image, someone using the name “GratefulMother” just happened to post glowing praise for Roundtree on The Augusta Chronicle’s website. Coincidentally, “GratefulMother” happened to have access to Roundtree’s own work e-mail account – because that’s where “she” posted the comments from.

“(Roundtree’s) name, a birth date and the address of the sheriff’s office – 401 Walton Way – are linked to the account,” a Chronicle news story reported at the time.

Can you say “shameless and dishonest”?

Now Roundtree’s supporters are apoplectic over the black Waynesboro officers’ well-meaning endorsement of Peebles. Why? Again, most likely because it cuts away at Roundtree’s main qualification: his race. Chief Williams and the others had the impertinence to leave the herd and publicly endorse a white guy, and it clearly galls them.

When is Augusta going to grow up and get past such silly, backward racial contretemps?

Well, this election would be a great start.

We urge folks to see beyond Roundtree’s lawyer’s phoney-baloney indignation – and ask yourselves: Which party in this episode is acting out of the color-blind best interests of Richmond Countians?

The elephant in the room has been duly noted.

Now, let’s walk right by him.

The person elected for

The person elected for sheriff should be based on qualifications, not party affiliation. I wish they would make it non-Partisan. The sheriffs office, judges, and DA shouldn't be operated off of Partisan politics.

This is NOT the complete and absolute truth on how the events unfolded concerning the contents being left in the apartment. This apartment was sold by Terry Leiden to First Presbyterian Church in Augusta. This closing took place on June 30, 2007. Two tracts were sold (251 Telfair Street-where the apartment was located and the adjacent property of 245 Telfair-which was a vacant lot-Deed Book 1124 Page 1000/Deed Book 1124 Page 1107).

And before anyone says "Well, he had case files in his old apartment" I would like for you all to know that taking a case file out of the office IS common practice. Working on a case after hours in your own home IS common practice. It may be against policy & procedure but it IS definitely done on a routine basis when there is more work than hours in a day and you have supervisors saying you cannot add comp time on the books.

Please, PLEASE look into WHO supposedly called the Sheriffs Office to make the complaint that personal belongings were left in that apartment! Who had the MOST to gain by Roundtree being demoted? Who needed to ensure that there was written documentation in Roundtrees personnel file? Do you think that the people running for Sheriff in Richmond County woke up the day after Sheriff Strength announced he would not seek re-election and decided to run for office?

I am a Silas supporter, but I am so tired of people hearing one side of this story and believing it 100%.

And the collective

And the collective endorsement or individual endorsement is worth what?

You have one person who was "invited" to leave at a police department for stealing money from fines being collected. You have another person who is currently under investigation by GAPOST for sleeping with subordinates under his direct supervision AND for filing documentation with GAPOST that two individuals were FIRED whenin fact they resigned.

FIRED means you lose your certification though POST and you cannot be an officer. That is detrimental to your future employment in law enforcement and your livelihood.

Another one skips around to different positions at different agencies like it is a game of leap frog.

Then you have the fact that the leaders of the CITY OF WAYNESBORO need to be looking into this further than the Augusta-Richmond County voters do. What is it called when you create a false document on false letterhead? FORGERY MAYBE?

How does being black make it anymore significant? Because they are backing a white candidate? How is that important? So who is making this about race?

Patty P

Patty P, I could not agree more with your comment. Not a single police officer would ask if someone were democrat or republican before they helped them or arrested them. A sheriff isn't the drafter of laws, he is the enforcer of them.

Just asking ...

How were the black executive officers able to obtain a shirt and official letterhead for the National group known as NOBLE?

Along with Chief Williams of Waynesboro on that day, were his # 2 man, Deputy Chief Roosevelt Lodge, and Acting Lieutenant David Hannah.

This essentially means their # 1, 2 and 3 top police officials were out of the City of Waynesboro conducting UNOFFICIAL business.

Just chillin' with the Capt.

Karen, are you saying you have been to Captain Peebles' home and seen his case files? Come on! I had to go there since you set it up so well.

You may not mean to be hateful but your posts show different. Talking about people talking smack out of the trailer park? I understand passion for your candidate but I wouldn't want you talking for me. You make me not want to vote for Silas.

Race Card Was Played Alright

The race card play was trying to purport a chapter of a national black organization was supporting Peebles. I suspect these Waynesboro men didn’t come up with the idea themselves. Who does Williams have close ties with? This was an orchestrated move to make it appear a chapter of a national black organization supported Peebles because Roundtree is gaining the support of Richmond County black organizations. Those few men didn’t have to use the name of the group. That was dishonest.

Speaking of more dishonesty with racial play tactics what about Peebles running as a Democrat? Those days when conservatives would still run as Democrats are gone.

But maybe Peebles really is a Democrat, I don't know. He did say he was proud he went to Obama's inauguration and would put a Obama bumper sticker on his car if it wasn't a county car. When blacks are around he is an Obama supporter, but when whites and some in the media are around it's a wink that he's a Democrat. Playing it both ways.

Richmond County is 61% nonwhite and if that scares you and you don't want to run as a Democrat all I can tell you is move, but don't try to deceive the blacks....and whites.

Freddie Sanders has straight-up said he is a Republican and would never run as a Democrat. Let's reward honesty and punish deception

Clk said, "On a serious note. All the canadiates sheriff, Judge, superior court etc.... have children that can read all the "hear say" things that are being posted and said about there parent. I would think some respect for these kids should be shown. All the canidates have some experience that would make them a good sheriff, judge etc.... But, it comes down to the votes on election day. So go out and vote.:"

Does Roundtree have kids? Some have been less than kind to him in that regard.

SeenIt, the Bias is Showing

I've had two lenghty comments pulled under articles about CAPTAIN P THE OBAMA SUPPORTER without explanation. Sean said he didn't pull one and hasn't responded yet to my inquiry today. I know when he pulls them he tells you what's wrong with it so you can fix it. It was up all night until midmorning when it disappeared. Luckily, I had saved the one today and reposted above.

Clk said, "If someone has not been kind to his children then Im totally against that. I said ALL the canadiates children should be respected!"

I don't know of any candidate who has been unkind to his children. But circumstances of affairs and divorces probably do hurt kids if the truth is known. Family relationships are not some kind of accounting practice, they're more of an art.

I play fair

I have a pretty good track record on the Chronicle and people know I don't make up stuff. If I'm wrong and someone points it out I'll admit it. I have intentionally backed away from lots of personal matters after I was asked to not say certaing things by someone very important in the RCSO. I play fair.

Candidates Should Say...

Clk said, 'Maybe some of Robbies supporters will get a higher rank position if he wins????"

That's a good point. All candidates should publicly announce they will not bring in those in the bar trade to the RCSO in high ranking positions and not replace current high ranking administrative officers.

Freddie will make a great

Freddie will make a great Sheriff. Peebles will make the next best Sheriff. In either case, both would have Ronnie Strength's support after the election. I personally think that it is essential for the good of Augusta. After that Silas and Ivey.

Electing Roundtree as Sheriff would just finish this place off for good...

Excellent editorial in calling it like it is.

Or do we need something different.

Take race out of the equation, BOTH ROUNDTREE AND PEEBLES seem dishonest.

PEEBLES seems to be more of a politician than a Sheriff. He knows how to play the game....which is why Augusta is in the situation it is in.

THIS IS NOT A GAME....lives are at stake.

River has made some great

River has made some great points and does sit quieter than most on things he knows. Unfortunately, Augusta politics aren't pretty.

On another note, Sheriff Strength has done a great job and his shoes will be difficult to fill.

Columbia County has been very blessed by having Clay Whittle as Sheriff. Praying for the best for Augusta.

Thanks, Willow and Clk.But

Thanks, Willow and Clk.

But let's look at this whole matter again. Keep in mind, I am certainly not a Roundtree fan. I am the one who picked up on him signing out the hooker on weekends from the Chronicle article and kept repeating it until he was disciplined.

However, in this case when it was learned the Waynesboro men had used the national group's name and given an edorsement against the rules for nonprofit organizations, his campaign had to point out the wrongdoing. This is clear as day. The editorial is wrong as going the opposite way on a one-way street.
