Will media chase this scandal?

Obama's silence compounds outrage over 'Fast and Furious'

  • Follow Editorials

The “Fast and Furious” debacle already was a major scandal. Federal agents purposely allowed high-powered weapons to make it into the hands of murderous Mexican drug cartels – and one of the guns from the bungled operation apparently was responsible for the murder of U.S. Border Patrol agent Brian Terry.

But the Obama administration has doubled the scandal with what appears to be a tenacious cover-up: Attorney General Eric Holder’s Justice Department has been so uncooperative in getting to the bottom of the scandal – most recently refusing to release documents that have long been subpoenaed by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee – that the committee was forced to hold him in contempt.

The full House of Representatives is set to vote on the contempt finding next week.

It may not yet be “Obama’s Watergate,” as historian Tim Stanley says it might in The Telegraph of London. Then again, it may arguably be worse: As Stanley notes, “no one actually got killed during Watergate.”

The other major difference in the scandals: Watergate involved a Republican president. We’ll see whether there’s a Woodward and Bernstein this time around who care enough to dog a Democratic one.

For what it’s worth, the early indications aren’t promising: The mainstream media mostly downplayed or ignored this roiling scandal until the contempt vote Wednesday. And even then, ABC’s evening newscast led with the weather.

Yawns aren’t in order, folks. A good man is dead, his family has no answers, and the White House that could provide those answers is defying even a contempt order by the House in order to keep a lid on those answers.

The questions must be answered: Who ordered this operation? Why has no one been held accountable? How high up in the administration does the responsibility lie?

And, most important: What are they hiding? What could be so damaging that the administration would rather face a contempt action than release the documents?

Remember: As commentator Charles Krauthammer noted Wednesday, this is the same administration that leaked highly sensitive information about covert operations in Iran and Yemen. Now, all of a sudden, when a U.S. Border Patrol agent lies dead, they actually want to keep a secret?

And didn’t this president promise the most transparent administration in history?

Just as outrageous, when the scandal first broke early last year with the help of whistleblowers in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Holder’s department denied in a Feb. 4, 2011, letter that the program ever existed. But evidence later indicated senior DOJ officials knew about Fast and Furious before the February 2011 letter. Holder’s department didn’t retract that falsehood until December 2011.

Holder himself has been caught red-handed. He told Congress in sworn testimony in May 2011 that he only learned of Fast and Furious in the prior few weeks – but internal Justice Department documents show he was informed as early as September 2010.

It’s not just Congress that the administration is showing contempt for. It’s also the family of fallen agent Terry.

“Our son lost his life protecting this nation,” the family said in a statement Wednesday, “and it is very disappointing that we are now faced with an administration that seems more concerned with protecting themselves rather than revealing the truth behind Operation Fast and Furious.”

President Obama invoked executive privilege to keep the documents hidden, which is interesting – not just because of the other leaks that have emanated from the White House recently, but because the documents in question may have more to do with the cover-up of Fast and Furious than the operation itself. It’s a very questionable use of the privilege power – even “Nixonian,” as some have said.

The question is, will the media be as curious about this president’s scandal?

The fact is that gun walking started in 2006 during the Bush administration. So shouldn't the investigation also look at that administration. Congress should investigate how a terrible idea such as gun walking happened-not try to score political points. What cover up is here. Holder has acknowledged the operation was wrong. He has provided documents showing how wrong the operation was and why. He has taken responsibility for the wholw thing. Comparing this to Watergate is a lame attempt to denigrate this administration.

the most transparent

the most transparent administration ever....obama's own word..he called bush unpatriotic for bush's debt..he chastized bush for using executive privelege...promised posting bills b/4 signing..promised peace because he cared and bush was a cowboy...all kinds of promises from cutting debt, to jobs in all 57 states, to the loweing of the sea levels.to, to twinkies in every one lunch box..this man has promised it all to his base .but he's in way over his head, and it shows...in the cover ups, the high unemployment, the ever increasing debt, the increase turmoil around the world, the list goes on and on and the excuses pile up...lord save our republic

Inquiring minds

How can a President who so openly abuses and violates the doctrine of separation of powers all of a sudden invoke the doctrine? Just last Friday, the President once again violated separation of powers by admittedly usurping the authority of Congress on immigration. And how can executive privelege be invoked when Holder has repeatedly testified before Congress that the White House had no involvment or knowledge of Fast and Furious? Inquiring minds want to know

Ultrarnr, have you absolutely

Ultrarnr, have you absolutely lost your mind? Just curious but have you been watching the same hearings I've seen? To say that "He has taken responsibility for the whole thing." Is the biggest joke I've heard on here in a very long time. He has dodged, ducked and dodged just about every question they posed. He has attempted to blame everyone BUT himself and the President. If this isn't BLIND FOLLOWING, I don't know what is. No matter what side of the political isle a person is on, this should stand out to everyone as being extremely dishonest, unless your a committed left wing radical.

"...gun walking started in 2006

...during the Bush administration." Actually, it didn't. That LIE was one Holder had to retract early on when the Congressional investigation began in earnest. That deliberate perjury was the impetus for really getting to the bottom of this treachery designed at once to give Holder some personal glory -- and his Messiah by reflection-- for "stopping the flow of guns" from the US, and with the same illegal action, smear the gun dealers and undercut the hated 2d Amendment.

Perhaps the documents are with his birth certificate, waiting to be manufactured.

It's so amazing that the same

It's so amazing that the same folks who criticized Bush for everything from earthquakes to floods are the very ones who demand the Obama cannot be held accountable for anything whatsoever. He does nothing wrong, and if you simply point out one of the many issues dogging his admin., you are scum.

Facts don't matter. Broken promises don't matter. Hypocrisy doesn't matter. Failed policies don't matter. Mounting evidence of corruption doesn't matter. The continuing economic decline doesn't matter.

What does matter? Apparently, nothing but race and the mainstream media's determination to re-elect Obama at all costs.

Obama Could Issue Another Executive Order

Obama could save us a lot of trouble if he would just do another executive order and do away with the November elections. No need to have elections because we all know some will vote against him just because. I bet MSNBC will go along with my idea.

Howcanweknow- I think you are

Howcanweknow- I think you are spot on. The truth of the matter is that two US law enfocement officers have been killed by weapons froms Fast and Furious Look up Zapata an INS agent. Over two hundred Mexican citizens ( I am sure some could have looked like Obama's son, if he had one) killed. The whole operation was done with oout the knowledge of the Mexican government. Differances between wide reciever. The biggest differance is they actually tried to track the weapons used in Wide Reciever but the cartels quickly figured out how to disable the tracking devices so the program was stopped. The Mexican government was aware of wide reciever. ( http://www.examiner.com/article/how-much-evidence-of-mexican-involvement... ) 600 guns were "walked" during wide reciever. Fast and Furious had no tracking devices. Fast and Furious was done with out the knowledge of the Mexican government. ( http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/world_now/2011/09/us-has-yet-to-explain-... )Over 2,000 guns were "walked" during Fast and Furious. Holder had to back off his statement that Bush DOJ knew about Wide Reciever.

Holder/JP retracted its

Holder/JP retracted its congressional testimony that the Bush administration knew all about FAST and FURIOUS just a few days before President Obama envokes executive priveledge in an attempt to stop congress from voting to declare Holder contempt of congress. Clear as mud and smelly too. I would be willing to call it scandulous behavior unbecoming our top law enforcement officers.

Stop Blaming Bush

Good grief already. Stop blaming Bush. I've got news for you, he isn't president anymore. Now Obama is and he needs to take the blame for his own debacles. He has lied from day one and has not honored most of his promises like being transparent but that doesn't seem to concern most of you liberals. All you can say is how about Bush? Well? How about Obama's lies and cover ups?

they have already basically been caught in two lies, now they circle the wagons. They first said the didnt know anything about it, had to retract that, then they tried to say that Bush's AG knew about it and had to retract that. Now the deflection comes, Its racist, its retaliation for blocking voter ID. Its disturbing how comfortable some on the left are with the death of one of our own border agents, not to mention countless Mexican officers and civilians who were killed with these weapons. Well, as long as no one in the administration is embarassed, its all good right?

Gun Walking - The current

Gun Walking - The current administration changed the rules and the name when they took control. This program which is now known as Fast and Furious is not the same as Gun Walking, although similar.
You can't place the blame on the Bush administration for this mess no matter how hard you try.

Interesting that when we talk

Interesting that when we talk about gun violence in America and law enforcement getting shot, people vehemently insist that guns don't shoot people, people do.

Now suddenly the guns are to blame?

The anti gun control lobby is setting themselves way back with this one.
