A tarnished halo

Media push deification of Obama to an absurd new level

  • Follow Editorials

They did it as much for themselves as for the president. It’s a great way to get attention, after all. And weekly news magazines desperately need attention these days.

But really. A halo?

Even by today’s lack of standards, Newsweek’s cover depicting Barack Obama with a rainbow-colored halo as the “first gay president” is an astonishing low in the annals of American journalism, and an alarming reminder of just how far the media will go to glorify and advance this man.

These news magazines have long had a nagging habit of trying to get so far out in front of the parade that they look hopelessly lost. But this – mimicking the 1990s referral to Bill Clinton as the “first black president” – will be hard to beat for its sheer fatuousness and naked adulation.

In a vacuum, it might be
written off as a mere publicity stunt masquerading as some sort of journalism. But Newsweek is not alone among the supposed “news” media in its attempt to influence this election.

The Washington Post recently ran a lengthy front-page story about an alleged bullying – a forced haircut – of a reportedly gay student by presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney nearly 50 years ago in prep school.

So they’re drawing quite a contrast for this election: a halo vs. horns.

A relative of the alleged bullying victim, who has since died, told NBC that the Post’s portrayal was “factually incorrect.” But assuming even accurately retold 50-year-old youthful incidents are relevant in a 2012 election that will decide the fate of the country, commentator Judy Miller asks, rightly, “Where are the comparable pieces about Barack Obama’s missing background?”

The media are completely ignoring huge gaps in our knowledge of Barack Obama’s past, as Miller notes. In just a couple examples, she says, “Where is the law school period in New York? Where are the string of girlfriends that he now doesn’t want to talk about?”

Fact is, Obama recently had to admit that a “New York girlfriend” he wrote about in his memoir was actually not a real person, but a “composite.” So his autobiography contains a little fiction. No problem.

Can you imagine the media forgiving Romney for making stuff up about his past? Or for admitted non-isolated illegal drug use? Can you imagine the media showing no interest in large gaps in our knowledge of Mr. Romney?

Can you imagine the media deifying a Republican who, like Obama, has come out in favor of gay marriage but won’t lift a finger to further it? If he thinks gay marriage is the right thing, even a civil right, why won’t he fight for it? Thank goodness the Civil Rights leaders showed more commitment!

How do the media canonize someone this way? What has happened to this nation’s free press?

Well, other than the need for these magazines to shock – a Time cover just showed a full-blown preschooler breastfeeding – in this particular case there are two self-enabling phenomena at work: First, the insidious, documented, undeniable liberal bias in the legacy media. Second, the cult of personality that has been erected around Barack Obama like Greek columns.

That cultish devotion to the man, first seen in JFK and replayed for Mr. Clinton, and so suggestive of a dictator’s fawning following, is a pretty poor barometer for elections in a free republic. Rather than lick his boots, we instead might want to examine the man’s policies and leadership and how they are impacting America – and how they might continue to do so.

First, of course, check the halo at the door.

Pornography-it's gay love!!!

Pornography-it's gay love!!! We've got naked pregnant or breast feeding women on magazine covers and that isn't pornographic so as long as we don't see his winkie it couldn't be perceived as pornographic-that wouldn't be fair and would be discriminatory. If an alien were to land on this planet they would likely leave with the conclusion the planet lacks intelligent life.

"so you wouldn't be offended

"so you wouldn't be offended if it was Obama with a Hilter mustache"

There were some rallies I went too where I did see this. It was not newsweek though, so not apples to apples.

I just read the article- written by Andrew Sullivan, who is a gay conservative. It's not bad.

Don't read the NYT all that

Don't read the NYT all that much although Maureen Dowd can be devastatingly funny at times and Krugman probably has the best handle on economics and there social impact.

I prefer the Washington post above all others. (What else would a rabid Redskins fan read) There is a pretty good balance of Liberal/Conservative opinion by talented writers who know how to work without the petty spitefullness that is(or should be)so embarrassing to our local citizenry.

Yes, I can be caustic and sarcastic at times and my cynicism runs deep. The only justification I have is the old fire with fire logic.

haloes

Of course ACES would print nothing to tarnish Romney's self-anointing halo, such as the fact that while Mr. Marriage-is-the-union-of-one-man-and-one- woman is descended from one Mormon with 5 wives and another with 12.
Had either of those Godly men actually practiced what Romney preaches, odds are that Mr. Clean wouldn't even exist!

As far as I can tell Romney

As far as I can tell Romney doesn't know who he is. Obama's dysfunctional family, screwed up youth, and poor education he received in America gave him a perverse ideology-that he won't admit too. Gee is this the best that America can muster. McCain, Obama, Romney, Santorum, Hillary a shadow of her brilliant husband. Now we don't vote for people we vote against. I guess all empires eventually fall and I guess with our failing economy, poor health care, poor eduction, poor etc. the new lot of politicians like Obama will all be wanting. I guess when you are a product of a failed systrem you are doomed to failure. Too bad "The Greatest Generation" was likely the last one. I guess you can't make a silk purse from a pig's ear afterall.

Whatever Romney's short

Whatever Romney's short comings may be , he does not hate America or Americans. Our freedom is over if this man stays in office and anyone who can't see that is blind.

deification

It's never a good idea to deify a Man, as it can be hard to know for sure whether he is a saint or a sinner. Much safer to deify a Myth like "God," who, since he doesn't exist, is neither.

Well we do all evolve. I use

Well we do all evolve. I use to be an ultral liberal and Dem. I believed the true patriots were those who fought against the Vietnamese war and those who served were the cowards for fighting an illegal and immoral war. I believed socialism was the answer and I was anti-capitalism. Call me a flip flopper but I must admit I was terribly wrong. My apologizes to those who served and you have my due respect, but I was young and a product of the best education where I was indoctrinated into radical beliefs. Gosh in many ways I sound like Obama's history. Hee,hee, hee. Haw, haw, haw.

Always remember on a standard

Always remember on a standard curve the extremes on either end are really a small population. Strange how the extremes are dominating the political landscape in both parties. God forbid a moderate ran as a moderate.

Conservative editorial

Conservative editorial writers, columnists and some right wing talk show hosts may be on the wrong track in constantly attacking the President. In order to change our country's leadership, the focus ought to be on policy issues. Unfortunately, we remain wedded to personality. (Granted, Obama has given us a lot to chew on!) The next time Republican or conservative feels the need to attack Obama, I hope he or she will, instead, tell at least three people why Romney will be a better leader than Obama. (Cite policy differences, experience, etc.) No need for all the drama!

allhans, you may have hit the nail on the head

you know at it's basest point, it is all about the money. No one really gives a hoot about the political process, it is about the cash and the best way to keep it coming... oh human nature is so predictable and some believe it is about doing what is the 'best' for all. NOT !

One thing is for certain.

One thing is for certain. Man should never use a religious symbol to promote themselves, and especially for such an
un-healthy cause...
Pray for their souls, they need it.
What man will do for power and money, as the old saying goes, just boggles the mind.

Is it just alternative energy

Is it just alternative energy research you hate, or is it because Obama supports it? You seem to take some macabre pleasure at anything that might fail with the government under his watch. It's darn sad to see someone with so much hate for one man that you celebrate an industry having difficulties, increased unemployment, or any economic downturn. These occurrences bring pain and suffering to individuals and families, yet you're willing to cheer since it makes the President look bad. Personally, I find it sickening that someone would wish ill on his country and its citizens in hope of the political fall of one man.

Some news sources slant

Some news sources slant liberal, some slant conservative. For any item portraying Obama as angelic, I can show you one portraying him as Satanic. Overblown rhetoric is older than American politics. Surely the ACES is aware of this? At least they never claim that they are injecting anything new or useful into the dialog.

Interesting that there are

Interesting that there are posts that accuse the editorial of knocking Obama when the editorial is actually about the media portrayal of Obama. The editorial is right in that there is the appearance that the "media" has chosen a side. Personally, I don't consider Newsweek and Time anything more than entertainment-mags wrapped in a thin caul of journalism.
