Accentuate the positive

Presidential campaigns shouldn't tear down opposing candidates

  • Follow Editorials

Mitt Romney has an opportunity. Barack Obama has an obligation.

Romney, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has a largely unprecedented opportunity to cast himself as the second “Morning in America” candidate, after Reagan.

Following the failed, malaise-filled presidency of Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan promoted a more optimistic, can-do, brighter vision of America. It was precisely what the country needed. And it worked.

That, and a lower-tax, pro-growth agenda.

Romney hinted at such a campaign Tuesday night, in a de facto acceptance speech in New Hampshire on a primary night with zero suspense.

“To all of the thousands of good and decent Americans I’ve met who want nothing more than a better chance, a fighting chance,” Romney said, “to all of you, I have a simple message: Hold on a little longer. A better America begins tonight.”

The slogan already was used in 2008 by his 2012 rival, but Romney’s message appears to be one of hope and change.

Meanwhile, the official candidate of hope and change, it would seem, should be obligated to be just as upbeat. That’s how he packaged himself four years ago.

Yet, he has spent much of the past three-plus years promoting divisive, partisan legislation, bitterly and sarcastically nipping at the opposition party, demonizing prosperity and trying to blame everyone else and everything else for America’s problems – including ATMs. What happened to the man of hope?

As that man, Mr. Obama has a special obligation, self-imposed, to provide a positive way forward – not a jaundiced eye in the rear-view mirror.

We call upon both men, both campaigns, to do just that. Show us how your America will be better, stronger, more prosperous and more secure – not how awful the other guy will be.

That doesn’t mean you can’t use the other guy’s record to draw distinctions between you. That’s just politics. But Americans don’t want to watch the Ultimate Fighting Championships all summer and fall. Bloodying the other fellow’s nose won’t put gasoline in our tanks or food on our tables or restore the confidence in our hearts or in our financial markets.

Give us something we can believe in.

This is the road less traveled in American politics today.

A hungry, fitful, yearning nation asks to be taken there.

Since the VP is so pivotal to a candidates chances, Gov. Romney has been casting about for his choice. One of his aides suggested that someone with opposing views would help balance the ticket.

Great! Now we're going to have Mitt running for Vice President as well as President.

What this editorial is really

What this editorial is really saying is: Please Mr. President. Don't use any of the charges brought against this phony by members of his own party during the primaries. Let's keep it decent by not pointing out what other Republicans think of the Flip-Flopper.

Too bad ACES. It's already on tape and not done by our President.

You guys are really amazing. You countenance, by your silence in the very least, the dirty politics of destruction played against this sitting president and then beg the opposition to treat you with kid gloves?

If Romney goes negative with

If Romney goes negative with the Truth about Obama's lies Romney will never run out of ammunition. Obama is already running on empty. How do I know, well Obama has an ad (narrated by Clinton who let Ben Lauden go, once when offered by another country and once when he delayed allowing cruise missle strikes), telling us how Romney would not have approved the raid. Well I got a question for you Obama supportes (ummm ummm back to you Retired Army) Why hasn't, in over three years, Obumbler tried even one 9-11 terrorist. Oh great Obama killed Ben Lauden, but what about the guy who slit Daniel Pearls throat and planned the World Trade center job? Weren't we promised open trials in New York? So why is Obama high lighting one of his only major achievements this early in the campaign? Because Obumbler doesn't have anything else.. Health reform, about as popular as raw chicken at a covered dish supper. Energy policies? Solyndra etc. Economic policies,? Unempolyment over 8%, most number of young people living with their parents since World War Two, Mexicans here illegally, you know illegal alians are actually sneaking back into Mexico. Need I go on? UMMMM UMMM UMMM

nice sentiment, not to

nice sentiment, not to realistic with the Karl Rove's of the world out there collecting millions upon millions to do just what the AC suggests NOT. The real problem though will be involvement by these PAC's in the house and senate races where 'outsiders' bring in big money and big guns to districts and states. There should be a law against campaign donations from out of district or state. Let the candidate get his money from the locals..

Private sector jobs have

Private sector jobs have increased like crazy. What pulls down the number is the decrease in private sector jobs. You see, as the stimulus funds ran out, the states have been laying off teachers, cops, firemen, etc.

Nice try Tech Fan- I guess

Nice try Tech Fan- I guess the "green energy revolution isn't happening fast enough, those Fisker cars being produced in Finland haven't added any jobs in America, gee imagine that! Maybe if we just built more windmills in China or Spain we could get our job numbers up. I guess 11 million to cloth 2 people didn't really add the Numbers Obumbler thought they would. Oh did you notice food stamp and disability claims are at record high I guess the crotch washing of African men just didn't quite increase the well-paying shovel ready jobs Obumbler had in mind did they ? Then again Oumbler can tout the low unemployment in the Congressional districts that don’t exist, huh! LOL

Save me the trouble and

Save me the trouble and please look up the nonsense you spout on a non partisan fact check site. I would get tired just typing the same stuff over and over. Is it some kind of obsessive compulsive thing? It would be interesting to see how many times you've typed the same things on genital washing, etc. Look at the stock market, jobs numbers (private sector increases, public sector jobs are the ones that are down). Everything hasn't gone perfect, as it has in any Presidency. I'll take a risk on a solar energy company (sorry the Walton family didn't invest well) vs. secret energy meetings with Enron, and 2 wars, etc.

Do you dispute that an EPA

Do you dispute that an EPA official said you need to crucify oil companies to get there attention? Please cite a source and I will show you the Video. Do you deny that the Obama administration posted money spent in the stimulus program in Congressional Districts that don't exist? Do you deny that Illegal alians are going back home because the economy here is so lousy? Do you deny that the energy department gave 1/2 a billion dollars to Fisker Motors to produce cars in Finland? Exactly what am I supposed to Fact check and what are you going to fact check?
