Bawling over a budget

Republicans produce plan while Democrats remain empty-handed

  • Follow Editorials

Just like you can use a Geiger counter to measure radiation, you can use liberal media fervor to measure the political potency of a conservative.

This week, Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin is burying the needle on the leftists’ Outrage-o-Meter. The chairman of the House Budget Committee unveiled his newest commonsense federal budget plan. Ryan proposes meaningful spending cuts; calls for reducing the number of income tax brackets from six to a sensible two; and lays out a carefully considered blueprint to balance the budget by tweaking Medicare and Medicaid.

But if this were a Western movie, with Ryan wearing the white hat, the audience would have been shouting at the screen to warn the hero about the upcoming ambush.

Since Democrats and their complicit pals in the media knew this was coming, they had an attack ready. Reports Politico: “Democrats are organizing media blitzes, House floor speeches and town halls back home to seize on the changes to Medicare ... .”

Mentioning “changes” and “Medicare” in the same sentence makes a lot of voters’ hair stand on end, and don’t think left-wingers won’t seize on folks’ worst fears. White House spokesman Jay Carney is clinging to the tired scare tactic that the Republicans’ budget would end “Medicare as we know it.”

Well, Medicare as we know it joins Social Security and Medicaid as the biggest money-draining entitlements this country continues to prop up. At the rate it’s going, Medicare spending is expected to surpass Social Security spending by 2040.

Ryan proposes having Medicare compete with private plans, and giving seniors vouchers to let them choose the plans they prefer. That’s certainly far better than the current plan of letting the seniors’ tax-burdened grandchildren pay for anything and everything.

But that line of logical thought didn’t stop CBS’ Charlie Rose from playing the role of ideological errand boy for the the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. On Tuesday’s CBS This Morning, Rose displayed a DCCC-concocted fake movie poster showing GOP leaders as villains trying to destroy Medicare. What bilge – when it’s gross overspending that’s destroying the country.

CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin even had the gall to gripe that Ryan’s budget plan lacked specifics about fixing federal budget deficits.

But Ryan is a far sight more specific than mule-headed Senate Democrats, as of today marking their 1,059th day of not even introducing a budget.

Ryan has weathered this specious abuse before. So when people such as MSNBC’s Martin Bashir spew the wild claim that Ryan’s “previous budget was excoriated by both Republicans and Democrats,” we have to point out that 97 percent of voting Republicans in both houses of Congress actually approved Ryan’s budget.

Bottom line: Republicans have a budget plan. President Obama and Senate Democrats don’t, and they’re trying to mask that fact by scaring voters into submission.

But here’s what’s really scary – staying on the same Big Government path of borrowing and spending into economic oblivion.

The real scary fact is that

The real scary fact is that Obama and the Democrats have increased the deficit more in the last three years than Bush did in eight, and Bush fought two wars!

Unpublished

The Ryan budget is a disaster. it cuts taxes for the rich, cuts programs for the middle class and poor and abolishes medicare. Let's be very clear vouchers are not medicare. Vouchers are a give away to insurance companies who just happen to be Ryan's biggest contributors. Block grants to states will essentially destroy many programs. Do you trust states like Mississippi to spend these dollars wisely? The plan also blows holes in the deficit. Passing this budget and we will be on a path to becoming a third world country with the very wealthy and everyone else. when will the middle class wake up and realize the Republicans have only the interests of the wealthy in mind/

ultranr- Well we do have to

ultranr- Well we do have to cut some where. If we taxed the "rich" at 100% we could could not covr the deficits the Democrats are spending. If we don't cut first then the spending still continues. Oh, where is the Democrats budget? Why isn't Obama keeping his campaign pldege to cut the deficit in half? Why doesn't Obama have a plan to cut the deficit spending? Oh I forgot, that's up to the Republicans who control only the House. The Democrats controlling the Seante and the Presidency haven't submitted a budget, Oh excuse you! Even when the Democrats controlled the Presidency, House and Senate and had filibuster proof majorities they didn't submit a budget? Do you want America to go on a "Greek" "vacation"! That is what the Democrat's irresponsibilty is leading up to..

ulternr- Please explain to me

ulternr- Please explain to me all the wealthy bundlers in Obama's last campaign that got crony capitalism deals like the owners of Solyndra and a bunch of other rich people who benefited from large loans (hundreds of millions of TAX payesr dollars) for "green energy companies". Yep Obama, looking after the little guy. Don't forget Obama's uncle living in poverty in Africa, yup watching out for the little person!Sorta like the 75th wealthest man in the world (a russian) whose company (now bankrupt) recieved a loan for Enr1 battery company! Oh well believe all the hype you want! Under Obama we have more people on food stamps than ever before, more young adults living back with their parents than since the 1950's and the longest sustained unemployment rate since the depression. Don't forget unemployment has remained over 8% (dispite Obama's promise it wouldn't afer he spent $800 billion to insure it didn't go above 8%). We now have record deficits and gas prices are throught the ceiling. Inflation is creeping up because you can't dump trillions of dollars on the economy and not creat inflation, to many dollars with no value attached. Tell me again how being fiscally irresponsible is good for the middle class? It is like the dump husband who maxs out the credit cards to buy his kids things and when his wife says "Honey we can't spend money like this" He says "You don't love the kids"..

Don't forget both Obama and

Don't forget both Obama and Chu (his energy secretary WANT high gas prices and both have publically stated it. Don't forget that Obama has decreased permits issued to drill on federal land by about 80% and off America's coasts by the same amount. Then he gets up and lies about it. Obama cancells the Keystone pipe line then runs down to Oklahoma and lies about getting a pipe line started. The pipe line was already approved and the Federal government has little input into it. The Keystone pipe line would have created thousands of new jobs and helped America's energy problem, but cancelling it was "helping the little guy". I really want to get the garbage Obama smokes because it puts him in another reality and he seems happy there!

Well, the real ambush, if you

Well, the real ambush, if you want to call it that, is that Ryan wants to cut the already-low taxes on multi-billionaires to an even lower level than what they pay today. It's Robin Hood in reverse.

You do realize that the XL

You do realize that the XL Pipeline is designed to bring Canadian oil to a Foreign Exchange Zone so that it can be shipped duty free out of the US to world markets don't you? The oil is not for US markets. You would think that the right wingers would be screaming over the vast amount of takings by emininent domain required for this project.

Techfan, it's for where they

Techfan, it's for where they can get the best price. If the world supply in increased by the pipeline then prices come down here, too. If world prices are higher than the pipeline oil, then the U.S. most certainly would use it. If the cost of production of U.S. oil is higher than the pipeline oil, ditto. Supply and demand, free markets and all that. Keep in mind supply is half the equation.

Not so much anymore.

Not so much anymore. Speculation and bidding by people who wouldn't know what to do with the oil if they had to take possession of it plays a big part. How about only allowing speculation by someone who has the facilities to store millions of barrels? Right now production is up, demand is down, yet prices keep going up because of "possible" unrest in the Middle East. Not exactly the usual "supply and demand" scenario.

Even a bad deficit reduction

Even a bad deficit reduction strategy is better than none at all. This is where the Republicans are trying to address a serious problem and the Democrats don't even want to talk about it.

Explain what you think

Explain what you think speculation actually is? Buying futures in commodites and crude actually helps fund the industries. Buying stock in oil production companies also pays the bills. Yeah, you try to do away with "speculation" and see what happens to capitalism.

I like the comment about whether we should trust Mississippi with the money. That really says it all. It's fine if money is given to the feds with their subterfuge accounting and money printing that couldn't honestly be accounted for, but don't let the states have the money and spend it as they require.

Well here is more proof Obama lies all the time. This is about his "expaditing permits" for the southern leg of the Keystone pipe line. Please note, this isn't from Fox News and actually quotes the people building the pipe line. http://www.calgaryherald.com/business/Update+TransCanada+sticks+timeline...

I don't know why Democrats

I don't know why Democrats are fussing about the Ryan budget, (all plans presented are open to changes, they never pass in the original form) they know that as long as they control the senate and the presidency the plan can go no where. It does make good fodder for the news media, though.

The only cuts we need to make

The only cuts we need to make are those that infuse cash to corporations via "corporate welfare" and military cuts.

Corporations need to stop hiding behind their ever-present grants and tax breaks, and pay their fair share on earnings like everybody else.

The military needs to tighten its belt as well. Do we really need another bomb/aircraft/ship that can be used to kill thousands of people?

Republicans in Washington

Republicans in Washington want to give millionaires and billionaires an average tax break of at least $150,000. They want to pay for those tax cuts by slashing programs that create jobs and protect our children, our seniors, and the veterans who have fought for the country. They want to end Medicare as we know it. And they want to undercut our economic strength by rolling back key investments in education, research, and our nation's roads and bridges. President Obama believes we need to live within our means and that's why he put forward a balanced plan that reduces the deficit more than $ 4 trillion. But the Ryan's put plan, put forward by the GOP fails that test of balance.

Remind me... what did Obama do to medicare to pass his version of healthcare? $500,000,000 mean anything to his voters? Or only when somebody else proposes it...?

Double standard and common sense have exited the building in this country.

Why that would be GW Bush! here is a fun fact http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-57400369-503544/national-debt-has... note that this is CBS. WOW . ultrarnr-Well Obama may fund

ultrarnr-Well Obama may fund things but we don't have money to pay for it, a differance with out any significance. Even if you put in the cost of Bush's wars Obama is still increasing deficits beyond Bush's and has had to ask for a raise in the debt ceiling (something Obama said was a failure in leadership before he was president). Obama promised us more open government and has rejected more Freedom of information requests than Bush. Obama has kept the wire taps and rendition (sending suspects to other countries to be tortured). Obama has given billions in "green energy" loans to his wealthy buddies! Obama started a war with Libya that was undeclared and with out Congressinal approval (both of Bush's wars had congressional approval). The only differance I see between Bush and Obama is higher deficits under Obama dispite Obama's promise to cut the deficit. Now I always need to remind my liberal buddies that the President has no money to spend. Congress has to approve the money and the Republicans that took over congress forced Clinton to balance his budget. THERE WAS NO SURPLUS under Clinton. Clinton ran deficits but had BUDGET SURPLUSES. So please explain again to me how we are better off under Obumbler? Here is Obama being mocked over seas http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=erYpXzE9Pxs Notice this isn't Fox News but you can blame Fox if it makes you feel better!
