Another case of inflation

This time it's the president's opinion of his job performance

  • Follow Editorials

You may not have seen this, since 60 Minutes didn’t even show it on the air. But in an interview with the CBS show recently, President Obama said, “I would put our legislative and foreign policy accomplishments in our first two years against any president — with the possible exceptions of Johnson, F.D.R., and Lincoln ...”

He humbly puts himself in some rarefied, Mount Rushmore-style company. Let’s take a look at that before beginning his sculpture.

Mr. Obama’s greatest foreign policy “achievements” may be the killing of bin Laden and the end of Gadhafi’s regime in Libya. But of course, he “led from behind” in Libya, letting Europe take the lead, and as syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer noted recently, going after bin Laden was not unprecedented or fraught with considerable angst.

Meanwhile, his entreaties to our enemies have met with derision overseas, and the infamous pushing of the “reset” button on U.S.-Russia relations – despite his having thrown Poland under the bus in the defense missile deal – seems only to have reset the Cold War.

Domestically, Mr. Obama’s signature achievement is the health-care reform law – which he let others frame and write, the American public still opposes in polls and the courts may ultimately strike down next year. Even if it is upheld, his signature achievement will have been to use a Congress controlled by his own party to force Americans to swallow a health-care prescription they clearly don’t want, and which stretches if not breaks the bounds of the Constitution and may do the same to the health-care system.

Would you want that plaque on your wall?

Next in a short line of achievements might be his “stimulus” package, which others framed and wrote and which put the nation another $1 trillion in debt without any appreciable improvement in the economy.

In the meantime, unemployment has settled in at record levels while the national debt breaks them every day.

Where might all that put him in the pantheon of presidents? Looking up at Jimmy Carter?

Harley, we have a good idea

Harley, we have a good idea where they come from, but it's up to THEM to figure it out. Tehran, Damascus, Islamabad, even Riyadh. We tell them to find the responsible people, kill them and we won't blow up the next city. You would see every house in the city being turned inside out in the panic to prevent the next nuke from going off. Anyone close to being a terrorist would be eliminated. You have terrorists in your country, it's your problem.

Right on, riverman. I'm with

Right on, riverman. I'm with you.

So, the question becomes.....do you wait until they've killed lots of Americans before you start destroying their capacity to kill lots of Americans, or do you strike first to eliminate that capacity?

Title user, you are correct

Title user, you are correct on one thing. Everything was not perfect before Obama came along, but the political reality is that generally whoever occupies the White House either gets the kudos or the blame. Obama will get the blame. Which takes me to Runnings 11:28 comment. I DO believe that whoever the Repubs nominate can and probably will defeat "Our Dear Leader" next Nov. One can only hope.

Obama got elected because the

Obama got elected because the press never vetted him and the press still isn't doing its job. The justice department allowed over 2,000 weapons to illegally enter Mexico without informing the Mexican government. Nobody has been fired, nobody knows anything (most of all Holder and Obama). 300 Mexican citizens and one US law enforcement agent have been killed with those weapons. Not one reporter has asked Obama about Holder or about punishing those responsible! Obama has wasted millions on "green jobs" Solyndra, Fisker motors, Tesla motor and training people for "green jobs" that don’t exist, the press, "Oh hum, nothing here to see folks move on". It was the same with Obama getting elected. Obama promised to bankrupt coal fired power plants etc. NO press follow up. That is how Obama got elected. If anybody threatened Obama the press went after them tooth and nail. Look at Joe the plumber. The revealed private information that was secure in government files (the individual that released it was convicted), tarred and feather the poor guy and all he ask about was wealth redistribution. Here is a video of how little the press vetted Obama and why he got elected! www.dailymotion.com/video/x9ev71_tom-brokaw-charlie-rose-admit...

"Another case of inflation"

"Another case of inflation" How true. Inflated sense of self-importance. Inflated reliance on the ignorance of most voters and inflated expectations put on him by a complicit media who would rather see an inept leftie than ANY Republican become President.

Runningman presents a false

Runningman presents a false choice with "Either he is that good, or they are that bad." It also must be pointed out that it isn't "obstructionism" to oppose an agenda you think is a horrible idea. Most pro-Obama people think that he is doing a great job because they support huge bailouts, Obamacare and the like. They can't seem to let go of the vaporous "hope and change" mantra long enough to look at the horrible state the economy is in and the failures of this administration. They weakly point to a past administration that has no power to attempt to paint the present administration in a better light. It is like comparing stepping in day old dog mess to stepping in fresh dog mess.

Title of User, Obumbler knew

Title of User, Obumbler knew the state of the economy and PROMISED, you know read my lips, PROMISED he would reduce the deficits by half, balance the budget (if he or the Democrats would only pass one), etc etc etc. Now the liberals and Obama supports say it is unfair to hold him to his promises..George Bush Sr broke one promse to "comprimise" with the Democrats and they wiped it all over him....so fair is fair, if you blast Bush Sr for a broken promise, then we can blast Obama for 7 or eight broken promises!

Title of user, nice try on

Title of user, nice try on blaming congress (Obama's plan for reelection), don't forget that the Democrates controlled Congress, both the House and Senate by commanding majorities, for the first two years of Obama's Administration. The Democrates still control the Senate. The Republicans compromised and gave Obama a TWO MONTH extension of Bush's tax cuts for the payroll tax. Obama REFUSED, would not comprimise on The Health care bill with Republicans, the stimulus package and many other legislative initiatives when the Democrats controlled both houses of Congress. Now that the Republicans control just one legislative branch Obama is crying like a little child and blaming the Republicans as well as the Democratic controlled Senate. What a complete loser..

"Our problems aren't

"Our problems aren't Presidential. They're congressional."

Just to be clear, the state of the economy and world relationships are not Obama's fault. If they were Bush's fault in his presidency, per "our dear leader", democratic party and media , why are they now, not his?
Perhaps, because it is now time to pay the fiddler.

Title of user- OH poor baby,

Title of user- OH poor baby, the Republicans could not filibuster until Scott Brown was elected (SO Obama had a super majority from Jan 2008 to Feb 2010) that seems like a 2 year super majority to me! Reid was still able to pass the Health care Reform bill with proceedural manuevers and the Republicans could not filibuster, cry me a beer! Even then Democrats could usually peel of one or two Republicans to block a filibuster. Nothing went forward that wasn't controlled by Reid. Sorry but that bucket won't hold water!

In "leading from behind," he

In "leading from behind," he ousted a powerful dictator without one loss of American life; how many American (and Iraqi, for that matter) losses have we suffered in our effort to oust Saddam Hussein, the dictator prior Republican executive branchers built up years ago to quash the Iranian regime that ousted the Shah prior G.O.P. executive branchers put in place long long ago?

I'll never, for the life of me understand the typical southern G.O.P. supporter. You'll hear 'em say stuff like "we need to take care of our own; screw foreign aid," but in the same breath, they believe, if we're not the strong-arm of the world, we're "leading from behind." Leading's leading, people.

I'll take Obama's first term accomplishments over Bush's two-term "triumphs" (more like harrumphs) any day of the week; and with each passing week of the traveling circus event you call a G.O.P. Presidential primary season, I'll be thankful there's a majority/plurality of American voters who'll choose to grant Obama a second term to build on.

Those of you on the fence - do NOT be fooled by the right-wing "trickeration" with facts and figures; they love to lump the bank bailout with the Economy Recovery Act of 2009 and claim Obama's contribution to the National debt is greater than it actually is; keep in mind, his first year in office - we were working off Bush's last budget - not Obama's. Keep in mind the bank bailout was signed and put into effect by Bush, not Obama. Keep in mind the 2009 stimulus bill wasn't as large as Obama and leading economists wanted it to be, but in order for it to pass, it had to be trimmed down to appease the right-wing politicians. They howled about deficits - because they know that resonates with their base, but they also knew they were making the stimulus less-effective in doing so, which works for them politically.

They'll cackle and clamor about Fannie and Freddie, but do not forget Georgia's G.O.P. poster child, Newt Gingrich, was on the FNMA/FNMC payroll - as a historian, of course; they'll also neglect to mention that reforms to FNMA and FNMC were (again) stunted by G.O.P. influence.

They whine and cry about Dodd/Frank, but neglect to mention they weakened these key bank/Wall Street regulations, post 2008 crash, because they knew it's lack of effectiveness (again) would work for them politically.

They hiss about "government regulation," but hesitate to mention the hundreds of regulations that came OFF the books under Obama, just last October.

They balk at "big government," but fail to point out that, under Obama, there are HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS less government employees than there were under St. Reagan.

Ron Roberts- Where to start?

Ron Roberts- Where to start? We had regulators and regulations on Wall Street during the implosion, the regulators were watching porn instead of regulating so I guess you think we need more porn watchers? Obama has spent and wasted Billions on green enregy BS. The White House accounting office told officials Solyndra would go broke in Sept. The Obumbler Administration went ahead and gave Solyndra (owned by a big Obama supporter) 500 million dollars and guess what ? Solyndra was bankrupt in Sept, Surprise. Just a quick note Ron, the budget and spending during Reagan's administration were controlled by the Democratic House and Senate! Surprise. Remmember when Reagan refused to sign spending bills he didn't like and shut down government? Of course not! Fannie and Freddie CEO and freind of Obama, Claude Reigns walked out of Fannie with a cool 6 million in bonuses after flying it inot the ground, but hay, what a few million between friends? The Bank bail out was signed by Bush but voted for by Obama, they both supported it so sorry that dog won't hunt! Obama's lies and failures? Hasn't posted bills before they are signed like promised. Obama hasn't tried the terrorest in open court like he promised. Obama hasn't cut the deficit in half like he promised. Obama hasn't balanced the budget like he promised ( he has submitted one budget and even the Democrats wouldn't vote for it LOL). Hasn't closed Gitmo like he promised. Started a war with a country that was not at war or threatening the US which Obama himself said violated the consitution ( I know he is a Democrat so it is do as I say not as I do)! Has tons of lobyists in his administration when he promised he wouldn't. Unempolyment is at record levels for record amount of itme dispite his promise ( did Obama really promise something?) that if the stimulus bill was passed unemployment would not reach 8%. Need I go on wiht Obumblers success or is this enought?
