Dishonest Rod

Blagojevich's disgraceful political career ends as it should – with a prison term

  • Follow Editorials

“I’m not blaming anyone. I was the governor, and I should have known better. I am just so incredibly sorry.”

– Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, apologizing Wednesday for his crimes of corruption

Now he’s sorry? Now?

After his arrest three years ago on federal corruption charges?

After undergoing at least a dozen federal investigations over the course of his political career?

After milking nearly every minute of his media exposure to tell people he was innocent?

And even after crassly exploiting his ignominious fame with such stunts as appearing on the reality show The Celebrity Apprentice, and charging $50 a pop for autographs while appearing at a comic book convention?

If anyone, for whatever twisted reason, wanted to create a corrupt politician, the Democratic Blagojevich would provide an ideal modeling template.

What crimes finally convicted him? He tried to sell the U.S. Senate seat vacated by then President-elect Barack Obama, and used the power of his office to extort campaign contributions; win jobs for himself and his wife; and extract personal gain by directing state policies regarding hospitals and a racetrack.

He is the fourth Illinois governor since 1973 to be convicted of criminal charges. In the land of “Honest Abe” Lincoln, meet Dishonest Rod. The state’s legendary plutocracy of criminals could be Illinois’ fourth branch of government.

Blagojevich’s crimes are shameful enough, but the brash swagger he displayed in the face of his looming conviction is nothing short of sickening.

Now a disgraced politician and a disbarred lawyer, he faces a 14-year prison sentence during which he should find humility and figure out how to rebuild his life into something meaningful.

His swagger was his undoing.

His swagger was his undoing. If the same scrutiny were applied to Augusta area politicians, the executive suites at Edgefield would be filled for decades.

It is interesting that all

It is interesting that all the news stories and editorials fail to mention that Obama, Emmanuel and Axelrod got Blagojevich re elected dispite the fact that Blagojevich was under federal investigation for corruption, We are seeing the "Chicago Way" played out in Americatan politics on the National level now with things like fast and furious (a plan to subvert the second amendment rights of Americans), Solyndra ( pay back for campaign favors) etc!

And the repubs' find

And the repubs' find themselves with a front runner who exhibits all the 'brash swagger' ole Rob had. Ever wonder really how he got elected ??? Look in the mirror people... if you'd vote for the front runner, you would be a hypocrite to deride those who voted for ole Rob.

Faithson- Exactly what Senate

Faithson- Exactly what Senate seat did Gingrich try to sell? The fact of the matter is that Obama supported Blago so if you support Obama you are supporting the Chicago type of corrupt politics. Obama's interviews with the FBI investagating this are off limits, ever wonder why?http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2008/12/questions-arise/

Blago was just one of many

Blago was just one of many crooked politicians whose cartoon-like persona made him a convenient scapegoat in a money for power political deal that bubbled out into the public's awareness. He was destined to become the fall guy in a plot that included the President of the United States, his Chief of Staff, one of his most senior advisers, and a sitting Congressman.

He ended up with a sentence far worse than the circumstances probably called for most likely because in a Howard Cosell kind of way, people just loved to hate him.

I suppose if you're a liberal and rather than face the tragic consequences of liberal policies on American society you'd prefer to laugh about it then humor may be the best medicine.

Alternatively, lending support to actually solving some of those problems might REALLY be the best medicine.

Maybe harley doesn’t realize

Maybe harley doesn’t realize it’s a torture video. Ralph (the one not getting the food) is a known Tea Party member and Dennis his (progressive, liberal, socialist, commie, Islamic fascist) owner is torturing him for his political beliefs. He first used water torture (water boarding) as an “enhanced interrogation” technique (welcome to the world of Orwellian New Speak) but switched to Bacon Torture here.

Enhanced Bacon Interrogation Techniques.
