Sour note falls flat

Late-show band strikes up cheap-shot insult to female candidate

  • Follow Editorials

One news headline called it a “mishap.”

You decide whether it was – while keeping in mind the fact that “mishap” is defined as “bad luck; an unfortunate accident.”

When Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann was invited to be on the Jimmy Fallon show, his band was faced with the decision of what music to play while she walked onstage. They chose a song by Fishbone called – and we have to censor it – Lyin’ A-- B----, for which the operative lyric is “You’re nothing but a little lyin’ a-- b-----.”

Think about that for a moment. This was the musical message delivered to a sitting congresswoman in good standing who is running for president.

A mishap? Bad luck? An unfortunate accident? Or a purposeful, profane, public slap-in-the-face slander?

Did they think it was funny? Did they think it would remain an inside joke – that only the in-crowd would know what song they were playing and what its lyrics say?

When observers note the liberal bias of the media, they’re generally talking about the news media – but the bias may be even more pernicious in the entertainment media, where they not only choose sides politically but they apparently feel free to do so in the nastiest, most profane ways possible. They can do that, because they’re just joking, right?

Recall that liberal comedian David Letterman once cackled about the thought of a minor daughter of Sarah Palin being impregnated by a New York Yankee. Comedian Jay Leno’s interviews of Democrat and Republican politicians are markedly different, as well. As for Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart and HBO’s Bill Maher – well, they’re both biased, but Maher is so far beyond the pale in what he says about conservatives that it truly is beyond words.

Late-night bands are famous for choosing musical introductions that have something to do with the guest. It’s hardly an accident.

There can be no question in any reasonable person’s mind that a liberal female politician would never have been subjected to the street-worthy slight that Jimmy Fallon’s band excreted on such a lovely, patriotic, God-fearing, respectable mother and foster mom, lawyer and congresswoman as Michele Bachmann. The forced apology by the network – which Bachmann noted didn’t come from the top – and the supposed “severe” reprimand of the band don’t come close to making amends. Heads should have rolled – in the same fashion as, say, a conservative’s head might have if a liberal had been insulted thusly.

But then, Michele Bachmann is fair game. She’s a conservative and a woman.

Liberal musicians have names for such people.

Why would she expect anything
Unpublished

Why would she expect anything different? If you're an unpopular candidate with many public issues- do you expect a marching band and red carpet from a late night talk show host?? No, you're there to be mocked for the most part.

Copperhead he probably

Copperhead he probably has.
I'm no fan of Michele Bachman but that was just downright rude, crude and absolutely tasteless.
I can't stand the garbage that passes for music these days.
Now I'm sounding like my parents.

It was exactly what it

It was exactly what it appears to be, mean-spirited, crude and most importantly intentional. Had it been a liberal female appearing on the show there is no way something like this would have occurred. The red carpet would have been rolled out for a Hillary Clinton or Nancy Pelosi. And I can't even stand to think about Bill Maher, someone should remove his tongue and roast it and feed it to the hogs. This was not accidental, it was probably planned with relish and sneers.

Just checked Politifact's

Just checked Politifact's truthometer. This source rates statements by many, many public figures on a scale from true to false and "pants-on-fire" false. It has identified statements as "pants-on-fire" false by Obama, Biden, Reid, and Pelosi, as well as all the Republican candidates. Guess who rates the highest percent of all politicians for false and pants-on-fire statements? You got it: Michelle Bachmann! So was the Fallon band music choice crude and tasteless? Yes. Was it essentially wrong? Nope. Let's just say among current pols, Bachmann is the biggest liar of all. Sorry MR, your defense of the "lovely" Michelle Bachmann might be chivalric, but's it is also a big fat lie.

It was planned. The show was tweeting before her appearance what they were going to do. They thought it was great fun. Of course, it's NBC and should be expected.

Gov. Bobby Jindal walks out to give a TV rebuttal to Obama's speech and Chris Matthews laughs at him. What does NBC do? They keep his laugh sound track and play it nightly on the show. Hardly an apology from old thrill up the leg, spittle emitting Matthews. Of course he also told Michelle Bachman she was hypotized when interviewing her.

I say anytime Michelle Obama or Hillary come around, somebody plays "Big A.. Woman."

After listening to Rush, Faux

After listening to Rush, Faux news, and the Fox pundits comments on the 'liberal elite' from the other party, I would say what's good for the goose is good for the gander... although the band could have picked a more appropriate tune, something about 'lame brain and crazy' would have been more appropriate.

The outright hatred that I

The outright hatred that I sense when reading some of the comments on this site makes me realize why our political system is in the shape that it is in. To run for public office one must have skin like an elephant. We are getting what we deserve. The good news is that this site does have standards that prevents us from using language like I read on other sites.

Yeah Riverman, just call the opponent a liar and they're done. They think if they tell THEIR lies long enough everyone will believe them. Many do, but not all, and it's those who seek and see the facts that drive the liberals crazy.

I have less of a problem with

I have less of a problem with the choice of music than the continual lack of anything funny from Fallon. He wasn't even funny on SNL.
BTW, Rush reportedly used Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back" when introducing a segment about Michelle Obama. Not as insulting as what Fallon did but still.

Here's the major disconnect.

Here's the major disconnect. We are talking a major network. Plus, it's not even a political show. She was being interviewed in a supposedly fun way. When Fox had ole Hank Williams on half drunk, their hosts jumped on his remarks to their credit.

If we start picking out what every radio show talk guy says, there would be ample ammunition on both sides.

It was completely deliberate,

It was completely deliberate, but I bet the band pretty much runs its own show (it was the bandleader that tweeted ahead of time, not someone else associated with the show) ...

But the irony is that, as shown in eel's post, she DOES have a problem sticking to the truth. So, what's worse? A politician that plays fast and loose with truth, or the liberal musician that calls her out on it?

On the Fallon show,

On the Fallon show, (Seriously, who watches that show?) what were the lyrics the band sang when she was introduced? We all know the title of the song, but did they actually call her names?

If not, it is still tasteless and rude to introduce your guest like that. Regardless of their views on her, she's a guest on their show. It's one thing for Rush and friends to play some Barack the Magic something song on air, but it would be entirely different if they played that song as in introduction to the President.

Reality is, Michelle Bachmann is by far the biggest fabricator in American politics. Without a doubt.

Bill Mahers name has been thrown out here a lot, but no Ann Coulter? And the Daily show is fair on everyone, they are always making fun of Rep. Rangel on vacation passed out with his front butt.

Point is- the right does these petty things all the time, so why is there an uproar? Has this editorial ever said anything about being politically correct is damaging on many issues?

TP, they used no lyrics,

TP, they used no lyrics, didn't announce the name of the song, and their arrangement was different than the album version. If the band hadn't tweeted what song it was, chances are it would have slipped right on by as their own personal joke.

And it's qualitatively different when a late night band does this than when a party chair distributes a song. If this were the DNC chair distributing this song about Bachmann (as in the case of the RNC chair with his magic negro moment of stupidity), it would be a whole different ball of wax.

Both sides have their knee-jerk sensitivities, and it's admittedly subjective what constitutes an outrage. This one is, in my subjective opinion, pretty frivolous. If Obama came on the show and the band played the theme from "Brother from another planet" or something referencing his crony capitalistic Solyndra fiasco, it would be equally personally insulting, and equally frivolous. But again, it's all subjective.

Global warming is a cause,

Global warming is a cause, invented by liberals, intended for use as a vehicle with which to transfer wealth from the rich to the poor. It is one of several steps under way aimed at globalization of government and world wide communism.

There is no credible proof that mankind has had, or could have, any impact on global climate change one way or the other.

TParty said "Reality is, Michelle Bachmann is by far the biggest fabricator in American politics. Without a doubt. "

Whose "reality" is that? Not mine. I'd give that title to any number of liberals, most notably the current President.

As far as "fabricators" go, what would be your take on a poster that used a very Conservative sounding screen name and frequent claims of being a "Conservative" to confuse message board posters as to his actual political philosophy?

those denying 'human behavior

those denying 'human behavior effects' on the atmosphere use the same logic and reason as the Catholic church did when it castigated Galileo 5 centuries ago. Which is the nub of our civil crisis, those who are righteous about their 'truths' and those who see that the world of their 'experience' tells them their is more to this world than what they are being told or taught. Ms. Bachman being a prime example of the aforementioned.

Harley, I'm on the liberal

Harley, I'm on the liberal side of a lot of issues, and I have no bloody idea what that song even sounds like, as I have never heard it before. I wasn't making a point about someone being smarter than someone else. I was making the point that it was a rearrangement of a song that isn't a household name to begin with played one time on a late late show. If I had been watching, I would have had absolutely no idea what they were playing.
