Sold out from under us

Immigration raid exposes seedy side of American opportunity

  • Follow Editorials

Smart people don’t buy or sell stolen electronics out of a car trunk. Or jewelry. Or clothes.

Or opportunity.

The latter is what an Evans couple are accused of doing, by selling illegal immigrants the opportunity to work and live in America – albeit not out of a trunk, but out of their $1.7 million, eight-bedroom mansion on a golf course.

Federal authorities say Hugo Diaz and Blanca Miranda De Diaz garnered more than $400,000 in illicit income while sheltering seven illegals. And while the feds didn’t say it, it’s a no-brainer the seven were here to work illegally, presumably for Diaz’s De La Fuente Construction.

If they did so, they not only violated immigration laws but also undercut local competition and thus cheated area builders.

Such is the morass of the perverted “compassion” that leads some to believe it’s fine to let people hop a border and work illegally. As with someone selling stolen merchandise out of a trunk – which cheats legitimate business people – selling stolen opportunity corrupts everyone involved in the process and chisels law-abiding businessmen and women.

We’re told that large cash and check transactions were occurring regularly within this shady operation, which itself is a telltale sign of potential illegalities.

At bottom, they’re nakedly selling the Statue of Liberty out from under us. Well, guess what: It’s not theirs to sell. And it’s time they were made to stop.

We used to have a term for what’s alleged in this case: indentured servitude. It was a bad idea hundreds of years ago, and it still is.

If the next presidential administration does not put an end to this outrage and secure America’s border once and for all, then the American people ought to follow the example of the Minutemen and do it themselves.

America is all about opportunity. It was built by immigrants, on the firm foundation of a system of laws that respect individual liberty and reward industry. But America’s promise is debased, defiled and spat upon by those who would trample on our laws and cynically game the system and profit from their crimes.

Enough is enough. Stop selling America out of a trunk.

Your 'tribal' mentality is

Your 'tribal' mentality is showing. You would criminalize a whole portion of our population over this 'gangster' and his illegal enterprise, which by the way has been under investigation for over a year. No 'fence' is going to keep these criminals out, good law enforcement is, and a wonderful job to the Columbia County Sheriff's department.

The truth is those same

The truth is those same workers will be working in this country within days. There is an economic force out there that can't be stopped. People will pay the lesser price for the same work.

Sheriff Clay Whittle, proudly taking up most of my 60 in TV, represents how naive we are. His people raided the house and he acted as if he had actually slowed illegal workers in this area. Nothing is further from the truth. Whittle had to work hard to even get the feds to take action in this matter. The feds KNOW these people will simply come back after they are returned to Mexico. They don't treat them as criminals.

I passed a couple of construction sites yesterday and all I saw were Mexican workers. There is a demand for them. By law local authorities can't question the citizenship of people. And this current administration is not about to have the feds seriously trying to find them even if they actually had the manpower.

You call it "selling stolen opportunity" while others call it Capitalism 101. They work cheaper. My solution would be to give these people work permits and be done with the charade.

Realistically even that doesn't accomplish much. We think, yeah, make them legal and tax them. The problem is most of them aren't paid enough to pay significant taxes in this country where only the upper half of earners pay. But the Diaz couple certainly would have been paying lots of taxes if nothing else.

So let's all tune into the local Spanish radio station, have a shot of Tequila and relax. Simple as uno, dos, tres.

If stopping illegals were

If stopping illegals were easy it would have been a done deal...we need a way to tax & pay for living here.

I pay-you pay-THEY pay...It's called the pay-pay-pay plan.

Well, SeenIt, it might not be

Well, SeenIt, it might not be easy as pie to stop illegal immigration and to correct illegal work practices, but it certainly would be easier than putting men on the moon, installing the global positioning system, creating the internet, and many other of mankind's accomplishments. Stopping illegals is not a done deal because consumers, businessmen and politicians do not desire to stop them. There is too much money to be siphoned from the work of illegal aliens into the pockets of those consumers, businessmen and politicians.

You and I are doing the same thing Mr. and Mrs. Diaz were doing. The only difference is the scale. We are pikers, they are big time.

LLamb....Tell that to the US

LLamb....Tell that to the US government in DC......The states take measures to curb illegals & the nation slaps it down...2 steps forward & 1 step back....we might as well tie 1 hand behind our back at the fist fight!!!
They might say they want to go back but their actions DISPROVE that.

Unless it means they would

Unless it means they would lose their votes, it wouldn't matter the folks on the Hill. They would stay behind their closed doors, travel in their chauffeured, guarded limousines and smile through it all.

@ Riverman 'The problem is

@ Riverman
'The problem is most of them aren't paid enough to pay significant taxes in this country where only the upper half of earners pay' Nahhhhh !! The Mexicans I am aware of whether legal or not have approx 18% taken out of their paychecks and sent to Uncle Sam. These guys make around 22 a year. Thats no small change when you consider illegals will never see a penny of the 18% collected. These workers due pay taxes, lets agree on that much.

Illegals should be allowed a

Illegals should be allowed a federal working permit that allows the employer to collect a 40% federal income tax on his payroll. He must be in contact with his regional issuing center every 30 days. Let him go find legal work.

The criminals in all of this

The criminals in all of this is the local building supply companies & concrete companies that took large amounts of money from Hugo and asked no questions. Then there are the Builders that took out permits for Hugo so he could build houses and commercial jobs because they got paid for taking out the permit. Let’s not forget the Attorneys that closed the properties Hugo bought. The reason I say this is any of the above could have called the law enforcement and said a person unfamiliar to them wanted to do business with their company and the person was rumored to have been paying bills with large amounts of cash !
