Remember what we celebrate

Beyond the eggs and the bunnies, don't lose sight of what Easter is about

  • Follow Editorials

Sometimes celebrations can get in the way of the very thing you're trying to celebrate.

Easter is one of those times.

Many of the trappings of Easter -- the bunny, the eggs, the hunts, the feasts -- only obscure the reason for all the fuss.

Redemption. Forgiveness. Salvation. A life that will stretch to the infinite, far beyond the mortal calendar. This is what Easter is about.

These themes are of such momentous concern to the human soul, it's amazing and alarming how much the mundane (and commercial) motifs look so trivial by comparison. How can we get caught up so much in the candy and ignore the sweetness of eternal life -- and the path that has been made for us at so great an expense?

We live today in a world awash with instant gratification. It's easy to get shortsighted and focused on the pleasures at hand. But however good we've got it -- or however heavy our cross -- it only gets better from here.

Our Savior made it so.

God bless you all on this Easter Sunday.

Myfather15 is right that the

Myfather15 is right that the term "easter" should be dropped because of its pagan roots. The editorial is right that the bunny (an unclean animal), eggs, hunts, and feasts distract us from what's important, namely, redemption, forgiveness, and salvation in Christ Jesus, our risen Lord.

I'm glad that more and more churches are celebrating Resurrection Day or Resurrection Sunday instead of Easter. As for passover, Christ has been sacrificed as our Passover lamb; accordingly, we should celebrate the festival, not with old leaven (the leaven of malice and evil), but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth (1 Corinthians 5:7-8).

Myfather15 is wrong not to say we have a Savior. Christ still saves all who sincerely call on him, and he will save his faithful from all evil at his second coming.

Christians do not celebrate

Christians do not celebrate Passover. We celebrate the Resurrection. The Passover Lamb was a foreshadowing of blood removing death, but it only pointed to Christ as the ultimate Lamb of God. If a Christian wants to observe Passover, no problem. But, do not confuse Resurrection Sunday with an ancient Jewish festival. They are two different things entirely.

I'm going to wait until the very end to get that redemption and salvation thing from my Southern Baptist preacher. If I did it now and messed up, as I'm very capable of doing, it may not help that much.

Riverman1, you may wish to

Riverman1, you may wish to wait until the end to get that redemption and salvation but none of us are promised tomorrow. What happens if in the next 5 mins. you have a heart attack and die, or you cross the street, get hit by a car and die.

If you mess up, as we all do, just be thankful that there is a Heavenly Father who forgives and helps us get back on the right path.

Happy Easter, In

Happy Easter, In ChristLove.
Fundamental is right, Jesus will continue saving the lost until the very end and He continues to save the 'Saved'. Salvation is a journey not a destination. How glad I am for the continued help from Christ Jesus.

Hello WillowBailey, it's been

Hello WillowBailey, it's been a while. Glad to see you again and Happy Easter. I hope I didn't give the wrong impression in my earlier post. I was trying to warn riverman that we never know when our time on this earth is over and to say I'll wait until the very end is foolish because we are not promised our next breath.
