First he's FDR, now he's the Gipper? How can you be both?

  • Follow Editorials

The media are trying to cast President Obama in the mold of Ronald Reagan. Now even Obama is apparently believing it.

In relating an anecdote recently about which tie he chose to wear at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, Obama described how he borrowed the tie of soon-to-be Press Secretary Robert Gibbs: "But eventually he was willing to take one for the Gipper, and so he took off his tie, and I put it on. And that's the tie that I wore at the national convention."

So now Obama is "the Gipper" -- the nickname Reagan absorbed from one of his 1940s movie roles?

There's a new narrative in town.

Remember when Obama was first elected? To hear the media spin it then, Obama supposedly was channeling Franklin Delano Roosevelt in terms of policy, vision and general presidential stature. Sympatheitc journalists ached to fashion Obama into the next New Deal-making FDR to save America.

Only problem was, it didn't stick. His will to spend clashed with the need for governmental austerity, so the FDR spiel fell flat.

So the "mainstream" media changed their strategy. They needed to mold Obama in the image of a more contemporary president with more fiscal sanity. They needed a president who presided over an economy that actually performed well.

They found Reagan.

If you watched all the media analysis of Obama's recent State of the Union speech, you would've lost count at the number of times pundits dubbed his speech and the ideas therein as "Reaganesque."

And Time magazine -- the same magazine that barely two years earlier basically put Obama's face on FDR's body for a cover story -- published a cover illustration of Reagan putting his arm around Obama, with the headline "Why Obama Loves Reagan."

This is what Time's Peter Beinert had to say. We hope you haven't eaten recently:

"Barack Obama realized long ago that Ronald Reagan was a transformational president who reshaped the nation and its politics. Now Obama is fashioning his own president to follow the Gipper's playbook."

What utter bilge.

Maybe talking heads on the left are congratulating themselves at having accomplished their mission of getting Obama to believe the hype surrounding him -- for the umpteenth time. But smarter people who have even a tiny recollection of history or politics know the truth.

Obama is not like Reagan. He never has been, and he never will be.

Do you actually think Obama is practicing Reaganomics -- cutting government regulations, government spending and income taxes? He's doing the opposite!

Obama is exploding the size and reach of government through health-care reform. His Democratic Congress helped choreograph that and other unprecedented federal power grabs. When Congress doesn't cooperate, he dictates what he wants done -- such as having the Environmental Protection Agency regulate all carbon dioxide emissions. And do you think for a second he wants to bring down one dime of your taxes?

But you know what's even more incredulous than the mainstream media's attempts to graft Reagan and Obama together like some bizarre Siamese twins? The left's collective amnesia about the Reagan years. Here are the liberal media propping up Obama hand in hand with Reagan -- but the media hated Reagan.

Here's what CBS News slipped into a report on riots in Miami in January 1989:

"After eight years of what many saw as the Reagan administration's benign neglect of the poor and studied indifference to civil rights, a lot of those who lived through this week in Overtown seemed to think the best thing about George Bush is that he is not Ronald Reagan. ... There is an Overtown in every big city in America. Pockets of misery made even meaner and more desperate the past eight years."

NBC's Bryant Gumbel said this in July 1989:

"Largely as a result of the policies and priorities of the Reagan Administration, more people are becoming poor and staying poor in this country than at any time since World War II."

Of course, Census tables prove Gumbel wrong. As a percentage of the total population, the percentage of people below the poverty level remained almost stationary, from 12.95 percent in 1980 to 13 percent in 1988.

Obama isn't another FDR. He isn't another Reagan. Obama is Obama -- whatever that is.

It tells you we still don't know what it is -- if the same media can package him as both the biggest liberal and most conservative presidents in U.S. history.

Obama was seen carrying a

Obama was seen carrying a biography of Reagan. He admires Reagan's "Great communicator" legacy and sees himself as comparable. The problem is when someone is trying to imitate another it is a sign of weakness and being unsure of their own direction. The exact problems that have plagued Obama's presidency throughout.

Reagan and the other strong presidents in history didn't build their style around emulating others, they took bold, original action in response to tough times...exactly what's needed in these tough times.

I have heard all the hype

I have heard all the hype ever since big O became a public 'figure.' None of it is true...the charlatan that he is hides his true self and spends millions in order to accomplish his secrecy; only a person guilty of criminal acts would go through such lengths. I have even heard the big O compared to Jimmy Carter and even that is wrong. At least Carter was known to the people and his stance for christianity and the love of God was evident on a daily basis---not true of the big O, who pretends to be christian in order to placate the majority of his non-supporters. While I did not like Raegan as an actor or the President, he did do some things while in office that would make any American proud; what has the big O accomplished other than to ruin the US. The big O even pretends to be the Messiah, but he can't even pull that off since the big O has no understanding of what the Ultimate Creator, God, truly is. This pretender to the Presidency should be impeached and the sooner the better. As for his cohorts in crime, they should be arrested and tried for treason and attempts to over-throw our government. The evidence is out there in plain view. It is past time to end the big Os dream of being America's last elected President and first dictator.

Agreed, comet2u. ACES needs some other issues to discuss like the state congress trying to lower the taxes for us and corporations but at the cost of service based businesses. These daily Obama rants are quite boring to read and the bitterness they have is quite stale to everyone but the Obama ranters.

A fun fact- a lot of liberals

A fun fact- a lot of liberals today still don't love Reagan. Liberals also wonder out loud all the time if Reagan ran today- would he be so loved by the Right. There are things Obama has done and said, which Reagan favored and had said- and still Obama is ripped by the right.

Oh, we all know exactly what

Oh, we all know exactly what obama is.

*He is a gifted teleprompter reader (except when he mispronounces stuff).
*He is well-networked with socialists, marxists & communists.
*He spent the majority of his life abroad or in Hawaii (just like being abroad). His views are not American.
*He was mentored by communists & revolutionaries.
*He wants to spread our wealth around - not only domestically but internationally.
*He is a man who feels a sense of entitlement due to his position. 60 full days spent playing golf over the last 14 months in office. Two work months out of 14 - or 14.2% of his available working time was spent playing golf. He vacations like no president in modern history - not just to a ranch but to lavish places - at almost 100% at taxpayer expense. He feels the need to regulary have lavish, over the top parties at taxpayer expense. (all of this while the rest of us are scraping funds together to buy food, gas & pay our mortgages due to this crappy economy)

Obama is no Ronald Reagan. Nor is he even close to JFK or FDR. The comparison is insulting and laughable.

I also need to add that obama

I also need to add that obama is a man who doesn't even believe in his own legislation. The number of exemptions to his healthcare debacle now stands at 1040.

If the darn bill is so earth changing, why the need to exempt 1040 of his friends businesses - including but not limited to.......UNIONS! Surprise!

He is also a man whose administration cannot bear to do the unthinkable.......utter the words Islamic Extremist or Muslim Terrorist.

This new video of the towers coming down ought to make you feel real warm & fuzzy and politically correct about the terrorists and our administations refusal to acknowledge them.

Does the Augusta Chronicle

Does the Augusta Chronicle make a weekly effort to turn off democrats from subscribing to their paper? I've only been here 2 years, but I've not once seen a single editorial have one good thing to say about any democrat. I'm not entirely happy with Obama, I think he's worked too hard to get in republican favor, and this editorial shows why he should just stop trying to appease the republicans. AC, If you want to expand your reader base, you've got to stop alienating the other side of the political spectrum.

Augusta Chronicle, April 9,

Augusta Chronicle, April 9, 1931
...The death room story of how the expiring star gasped to "Ol' Man Rock" to "have the boys remember 'The Gipper' when Notre Dame is threatened with defeat" has inspired many a gridiron miracle since 1920...

It's been part of the American language for over 80 years, and has nothing to do with Ronald Reagan or Obama, as the Augusta Chronicle has proven.

Every since the Democratic

Every since the Democratic Primaries I have said he is not the right guy to be Pres. He had no real experience and certainly not enough to have proven himself the right person to lead the entire free world.

I have said he would be another Jimmuh Carter, but without the ethics.

So far I have been proven right,

Brad

P.S. For full disclosure, I voted for Hillary in the Dem Primary and Veteran Hero McCain in the general.

As long as obama is in the

As long as obama is in the White House you can expect the drilling moratorium to continue. His arab "friends/pals" love it. They are making trillions off of this.

We should be drilling now - all over the U.S. and building nuclear power plants out the wazoo.

But instead obama is more worried about taxing carbon emissions, childhood obesity (i.e. restaurant & food regulation), his golf game, his next vacation, his daily union meeting, his next meeting with Google execs or the next White House mo-town party.

Obama is adopting and

Obama is adopting and continuing many Bush policies. I'll give him credit for these things.

-Gitmo is open. Even Harry Reid said, "no Gitmo inmates on American soil -- not even in American jails."
-Rendition (turning over terrorists seized abroad to foreign countries)
-Expanding Afghan War
-Expanded use of Predator drone attacks in Pakistan
-Denial of habeas corpus to detainees in Afghanistan's Bagram prison.
-Restoration of military tribunals. During the 2008 campaign, Obama denounced them repeatedly, calling them an "enormous failure." Obama suspended them upon his swearing-in.
-Patriot Act continuation
-Continuation of Bush tax rates.
-"Secrecy" in the White House, not his promise of "openess".

this from open source,

"... the Secret Service rejected requests from two organizations for public access to White House visitors logs. The logs document the West Wing meetings that have helped shape Obama’s policies on banking regulation, environmental policy, economic recovery and foreign affairs."

"And MSNBC reported that their broader request for White House visitor logs since Obama took office has also been denied.

"...one of the main controversies of the Bush-Cheney administration early on, pre-9/11, was Dick Cheney’s refusal to disclose with whom he was meeting while formulating energy policy."

http://www.democracynow.org/2009/6/17/

There are many more. I'll post more if liberals still aren't satisfied.
