The House that Roe Built

Philadelphia horror draws reality of abortion into chilling clarity

  • Follow Editorials

Media have latched onto the phrase "house of horrors" to describe the squalid Philadelphia abortion clinic of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, whom prosecutors charged Wednesday with eight counts of murder.

"House of horrors" is true enough. But more accurately, it's the House that Roe Built.

Today marks the 38th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. It is an ideal time to take an unflinching look at the side of abortion that its misguided supporters don't like people to see.

Gosnell faces charges after a damning grand jury report released Wednesday. The doctor, untrained as an obstetrician-gynecologist, supervised a staff of uncredentialed employees in a filthy office that for more than three decades specialized in taking the lives of late-term babies.

Gosnell's eight counts of murder involve a woman who authorities say died after a botched abortion at his office; and seven other infants who were born alive after illegal late-term abortions and allegedly killed by severing their spinal cords with a pair of scissors.

In Gosnell's horrific abortions, we're not talking about the rapidly multiplying cells that begin human life. We're talking about viable, breathing, precious, miraculous babies.

Said The Philadelphia Inquirer: "One newborn who weighed almost six pounds was so big, the report said, 'the doctor joked ... this baby "could walk me to the bus stop."'"

"Often, he allegedly gave the chore to his unlicensed office staff," reported the Philadelphia Daily News . "One premature infant wiggled around on a counter for 20 minutes before an untrained worker slit his neck -- after first playing with him."

This is the sick reality of abortion.

If only national media bothered to reported it.

All three network morning shows totally ignored covering this grisly case Thursday, the day after the story broke. That's beyond ignorance. It's an astounding, willful suffocation of the facts. It's possibly the biggest news event in recent memory in one of the nation's biggest cities, and NBC, ABC and CBS all give it a complete pass in their morning national newscasts? If this case didn't involve abortion, it would be at the top of the news.

Feminists always claimed if men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament. Well, guess what: It's become a sacrament -- to the mainstream media.

Imagine the deafening howl of media outrage if the suspect was just some random citizen charged with killing children in his home -- keeping their limbs in jars like trophies, as authorities say Gosnell did in his feces-strewn clinic.

But in the climate of pro-abortion dogma, where such a low premium is placed on human life in the first place, it's sadly not a big leap to descend further to the caliber of killing of which Gosnell is accused -- and to be chillingly indifferent toward it.

What does that say about the value our society places on human life? A society that could keep someone like Gosnell in business? A society whose health and regulatory agencies -- for years -- turned an inexcusably blind eye to violations uncovered in the grand jury report?

As you pray today for the tens of millions of lives that have been lost as a result of Roe v. Wade, pray also that justice is swiftly and rightly served in this recent murder case that is the stomach-turning pinnacle of savage brutality.

This is the stupidest thing

This is the stupidest thing perhaps ever written. I am now dumber for having read this. Thank you, AC. Murdering living people has nothing to do with abortions.

At least 38 states have fetal

At least 38 states have fetal homicide laws. If a crime like murder, assault or DUI crash results in a pregnant woman losing her unborn child, a murder charge can be filed. However, thanks to Roe v Wade, a mother can make the decision and have it done legally. Go figure.

"pro-choice advocates say such laws grant a fetus legal status distinct from the pregnant woman - possibly creating an adversarial relationship between a woman and her baby...They prefer criminalizing an assault on a pregnant woman and recognizing her as the only victim."

http://www.ncsl.org/default.aspx?tabid=14386

The cold fact is, we have a staunchly pro-abortion President. NOW and many entrenched judges support this as well. Heck, a majority of the Democratic Party supports killing unborn children. On what virtues? Control? A mother's well being?

Don't let this guy Gosnell be the focus here. He is obviously a monster and when this story gains traction the liberals will try to paint him as a "lone wolf", a "bad seed". Abortion as a whole needs to be the focus. Don't let them shape the issue.

Chances are this is symptomatic of other "clinics".

"AP) Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama may have a lot of explaining to do."

"He voted against requiring medical care for aborted fetuses who survive. "

"He had a 100 percent rating from the Illinois Planned Parenthood Council for his support of abortion rights, family planning services and health insurance coverage for female contraceptives."

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/01/17/politics/main2369157.shtml

"In 1997, Obama voted in the Illinois Senate against a bill designed to prevent partial-birth abortions. In the US Senate, ..he has voted against requiring minors who get out-of-state abortions to notify their parents. The National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) gives Obama a 100% score on his pro-choice voting record in the Senate for 2005, 2006, and 2007. "

"Obama has consistently refused to support legislation that would define an infant who survives a late-term induced-labor abortion as a human being with the right to live. He insists that no restriction must ever be placed on the right of a mother to decide to abort her child."

President Obama voted against

President Obama voted against the infant born alive act. The Purpose of the infant born alive law was to allow babies born after botched abortions to allowed to live and be provided medical care. Google this: Top 10 reasons Obama voted against the Illinois Born Alive Infant ... Techfan lets change the subject..huh

Let's see.... Realitycheck09

Let's see.... Realitycheck09 says that unborn babies are not human. Funny, the brightest physicians and scientists cannot tell us when a live fetus becomes a "person", but RC09 can. Didn't know RC09 was omniscient.
How terribly pathetic it is when people start to insist upon the right to destroy an innocent life. Shades of the 1940's again.

Did this doctor perform

Did this doctor perform abortions at a cut rate? Did those attending his clinic have medical coverage that wouldn't cover a legal safe abortion or no medical coverage at all? This appears to be more of a problem with a doctor performing procedures that he was not licensed for in unsanitary conditions than a comment on the legality of abortion. I'm sure if a doctor was performing angioplasty without training or certification, the AC would scream for all angioplasties to be outlawed.

So Roe vs. Wade legalized

So Roe vs. Wade legalized first trimester abortions, and this doctor was performing late-term abortions? Wait, and he's being charged with murder? So let me get this straight: this doctor committed a crime and is now being charged with it? What's the problem then, Chronicle?

I don't really get the point

I don't really get the point of this AC editorial. The man and his staff performed abortions after the date they are legally permitted. He broke the law and has been charged accordingly. He also apparently killed an adult. He's been charged with that as well. Could he have been caught earlier? Maybe. But you can say that about a lot of criminals.

There is nothing in this that requires additional legislation. There are already laws against what he was doing. Changing the existing law or passing another law would have zero effect on this case and would not have saved one single life.

Killers and madmen of all varieties exist in our world. They torture and kill children, adults, the elderly. This guy is no different from other serial killers. He had a method for acquiring victims and a procedure he used for committing the murders and dealing with the bodies. All serial killers follow their patterns, this was his.

It is total lunacy to attribute the actions of evil and insane people to a law or court ruling, or to imply that this case has anything at all to do with Roe vs Wade. Gosnell was not operating a medical clinic that went beyond legal limits. He was operating an illegal "murder for hire" business. Pay him enough money and he'd kill your child.

He deserves to be prosecuted and sentenced for his crimes, which are grusome and heart breaking. But there's nothing here that would require legislation. This is just more trumped up nonsense from the vast murky cesspool that is the mind of AC columnists.

DanK-"It is total lunacy to attribute the actions of evil and insane people to a law or court ruling, or to imply that this case has anything at all to do with Roe vs Wade." Sure didn't stop the left from trying to blame the Arizona murders on Palin and other members of the right did it? Besides that the issue of letting an infant born alive be set aside to die or directly killing it what is the differance? Obama chose the first method!

Let me see if I can follow

Let me see if I can follow the logic here. Demented "doctor" performing unlawful abortions = ban abortions. Demented individual killing people with a handgun = ban handguns. Yeah, I guess I can see the logic.

Slaughtering innocent unborns

Slaughtering innocent unborns is immoral, heinous, and evil whether it's "legal," or not. Abortions in America are used for birth control and are mainly for the convenience of a woman too lazy to protect herself, or insist her "man" do the same. God will not look kindly on those who kill innocent children whether they're in, or out of, the womb. If you can't trust your mother, who CAN you trust?

Boog, you're not following

Boog, you're not following much logic here. Guns can be used for good. They can protect innocent people, put food on the table, win a war, or defend a home from criminals. You don't ban all guns simply because nuts can get them and use them for evil. On the other hand, abortion has no good, other than to take an innocent human life. No one condones murder of any kind. Not by violence from a psycho, nor violence by a misguided "healer" that once swore to protect life -- but now willingly kills simply out of convenience.

Until we start celebrating

Until we start celebrating birthdays from the date of conception, life begins at birth.

Making abortion illegal will not end abortion - it will only make abortion unsafe. I'd much rather women have safe abortions as opposed to going back to the Cider House Rules days.

Until the GOP (and I tend to vote for the GOP) gets off the gay marriage and abortion high horse, they will never consistently win independent voters and women over.
