The smoking gun of bias

JournoList e-mails form despicable, anti-conservative paper trail

  • Follow Editorials

When it come to accusations of liberal bias, the mainstream media comprise a fervent shovel brigade, digging themselves ever deeper into denial that their left-leaning politics influence the events they cover.

Even when an ear-splitting whistle was blown by former CBS reporter Bernard Goldberg with his fascinating book Bias in 2001, most of the media would have none of it. They refused to admit liberal bias among the press, or that its members conspire to put a liberal bent on the news.

But now there is a howitzer-sized smoking gun -- called JournoList.

JournoList was an e-mail "listserv" started by Washington Post reporter Ezra Klein in 2007 as a place where journalists could gather online to discuss topics related to their work.

But last June, e-mails from JournoList surfaced in which Post reporter Dave Weigel -- the paper's beat writer for the conservative movement -- savaged the very conservatives he covered. The same day Weigel resigned in embarrassment from the Post over his e-mails, Klein shut down JournoList.

But if that's the voice of just one reporter, what have the others been saying?

Over the past several days, the public now has found out, in vivid detail.

The website The Daily Caller has released excerpts from many JournoList e-mail threads in which reporters and editors are caught discussing news events and how to present them to the public with a liberal spin.

In April 2008, when the racially toxic sermons of President Obama's pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, came to light, Spencer Ackerman of The Washington Independent offered this plan to attack Obama's opponents as racists:

"If the right forces us all to either defend Wright or tear him down, no matter what we choose, we lose the game they've put upon us. Instead, take one of them -- Fred Barnes, Karl Rove, who cares -- and call them racists. ... This makes them 'sputter' with rage, which in turn leads to overreaction and self-destruction."

In the hours after John McCain's announcement of Sarah Palin as his 2008 presidential running mate, the conversation tone on JournoList veered into what The Daily Caller's Jonathan Strong has called "more campaign headquarters than newsroom."

Daniel Levy of the Century Foundation threw out some hints to sink the McCain-Palin campaign -- "scare people about having this woefully inexperienced, no foreign policy/national security/right-wing (Christian) wing-nut a heartbeat away ... bang away at McCain's age making this unusually significant ... ."

There even was a debate on the listserv about how the government could shut down Fox News!

It's shocking to actually read the back-and-forth conspiring in the e-mails about how to boost the liberal agenda. But longtime observers of the media are not that surprised. The bias has played out before our very eyes for years, but left-wing stalwarts refused to see it -- or pretended not to.

And now, here it all is, in black and white.

Anyone out there still questioning why public trust in mainstream media is eroding need look no further than JournoList -- where journalists abandoned neutrality and deliberately conspired to harm the conservative movement.

It's not the public distrust

It's not the public distrust of the leftist "controlled media" that I question, it's the voter that trusts the "controlled media". One of the major goals of the 300 years plan (read the communist manifesto by Karl Marx) is to gain control of information outlets ... schools and "news" media. We're seeing the result of the misinformation promoted by these institutions. The horrible diversity experiment that's occupying the White House and the socialist/Marxist support he has in congress is really making us pay the price for our lack of diligence in protecting our country and way of life. The extreme bias in the "news" media has been obvious for a couple of decades (remember the Clinton years?). The fact that these obvious and choreographed attacks have "e-mail leaks and trails" being revealed surprises only the easily tricked. Unfortunately, that's about half of the voters.

Freedom of speech is a

Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing whether they are professional journalists or some jackwagon on a small southern town newspaper message board. If Americans have become so ignorant that they can't disseminate the information broadcast over the airwaves and put it in the context that it belongs regardless of the journalist's or media outlet's biases then America will only get what it deserves. It will just lead to more of the dumb leading the blind. The 537 current members of the legislative and executive branches in Washington, D.C. are proof of that.

Conservatives often complain

Conservatives often complain that liberals control the media or the show business or the academia or some other social institutions. And it's true. Liberals do control the media, or the show business, or the academia, among other institutions, because, apart from a few areas in life (such as business) where countervailing circumstances may prevail, liberals control all institutions. They control the institutions because liberals are on average more intelligent than conservatives and thus they are more likely to attain the highest status in any area of (evolutionarily novel) modern life.

The whole matter reminds me

The whole matter reminds me of Pravda, the old Soviet newspaper. The government would tell them what to report and how to slant things. It was so bad if a national disaster of some kind would make the government look bad, it wasn't reported.

Remember GE boss, Obama advisor, Jeff Immelt, gets his talking points from the White House daily and then tells NBC what the news is going to look like that day.

Funny it seems the chronicle editors are following the script the conservatives are saying about this same story, where is the chronicles originality? Some stuff is not even news worthy and could be why news organizations don't report on it like FALSE news. FALSE news tells LIES day in and day out, I wonder what FEARMONGERING topics are going to be pushed to those who following them today?

this is whats turning me off

this is whats turning me off (and perhaps a million other americans) from political discourse.. you have people like gaspringwater and cliffjohnson making it out like liberals or conservatives are mental defectives and their way is the one, the true, the light, ect. instead of taking someone's position for what it is, other people get attacked (well of course I dont know what I'm talking about and I'm brainwashed because I went to a "gubment" school [like 90% of the U.S. pop]) and then there are others who just use pet names for our president, and while thats kind of cute, it doesn't really get anything accomplished.. kind of like typing mmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmm (still don't know where that comes from) keep the change, and other bumper sticker mentality. This sucks. I'm going to go read a book.

Every citizen should be

Every citizen should be thankful for Fox News. The AC might cover this area but not the entire country. Fox is the only national outlet to show an opposing view and for that - we thank you, God.

When liberals are afraid of Fox News and Sarah Palin, then we are on to a good thing.

If FALSE news would report

If FALSE news would report the TRUTH maybe others would start watching it. I think only conservatives watch FALSE news, because it fits their agenda, I use to watch them, but it's to ONESIDED, everything on FALSE news is negative towards Democrats/Progressive, but all positive for Conservatives/Republicans is that fair and balanced?

Retiredarmy, everybody you

Retiredarmy, everybody you named in your 7:18 post is a NEWS COMMENTATOR NOT A "REPORTER"! A reporter is suposed to report a news story not spin a news story to fit their political bias! I am suprised you don't know the differance! When I watch the main stream press come up with a line like Palin is inexperianced (like Obama isn't?) it seems clearly orchestrated. No report on THE FACT , in the American press, that Obama's community organizing area was worse when Obama and Rezko left than before Obama arrived. Many of the housing units are now closed and considered unihabitable after Obama funded Rezko to "rehabilitate" them! Of course you did not read that in American papers unless you read old editions of the Chicago Sun Times! LOL What a joke our press is and laughted at around the world. The British press did better on reporting on Panty waist's corruption than the American media!!!

Hey folks, springwater has to be correct. Why else would they not need to even finish high school and a large % live off the guvamint. They have to be smarter than us hard working people that finish school and then went go to work every day so the guvamint can steal a large part and give to parasites that didn’t finish school and don’t work. It is an open and shut case springwater has to be correct.

OnlyinAgs1, ‘I see FALSE news

OnlyinAgs1, ‘I see FALSE news has been trying to put the Sherrod mess on the NAACP and Whitehouse LOL.’
You are correct it was Fox news’s fault especially Glenn Beck. Even though they didn’t show anything until after Hussein had fired her and NAACP had condemn her. They knew Fox and Beck would lie and show things that were not true. Even though Beck came out in defense of Ms. Sherrod it was still his fault. Even though the folks at NAACP meeting cheered and clapped at every racist statement Ms. Sherrod made, it was not their fault. Even though Hussein made another knee jerk decision it was not his fault.
Only, you are a prefect example of what is being taught by black leaders and the DUNocrats in black communities and black churches. It is not your fault if you drop out school, if you get in trouble with the law it’s the cop’s fault not yours. If you do not want to work because you can’t get a high paying job even though you dropped out of high school it’s not your fault.
Only, I understand it is Fox news’s fault.
Don’t be looking for OnlyinAgs1 in Augusta on 8/28 he will attending the OTHER rally in Washington, the NBPP.

Thanks God for the internet.

Thanks God for the internet. It continues to expose the liberal journalists for what they really are. Pathetic wanna-be campaign managers for the liberal, progressive, socialist & communist movement in the United States.

Within another 10-15 years I believe the media will be balanced 50-50. Then the liberals & socialists will lose about 50% of their campaign contributions - which they now receive for free.

It should tell you something

It should tell you something when liberals consider themselves more intelligent than everyone else. That makes them truely pseudo-intellectuals who think they should be the ruling elite. You know, like the ruling elite in any Communist party. They think their pseudo superior intellect gives them the ability to know where to spend YOUR money, know what kind of healthcare you should get, what you should eat and drink. When you dig into these leading liberals you find most of them were born into rich families and never hit a lick at a snake at making a living, running a business, or earning their own way in any shape or form. Their party base consists of other pseudo-intellectuals like teachers, and the gimmee gimmee class who are the beneficiaries of their redistribution of your money and healthcare. A classic example of their misguided socialism is the Obamacare bill they just rammed down our throat and the appointment of Berwick to run Medicare/Medicaid. Berwick worships the British healthcare system. TODAY....NEWS FLASH....Britain announced that they are making changes to their socialist healthcare system to INCREASE rationing of healthcare procedures, mainly to the elderly, because their system is not working, and is breaking their country financially. Nice move liberal pseudo-intellectuals. You've taken a system that hasn't worked properly since 1948 and shoved it down our throat. Liberals are NOT more intelligent. They have just been so insulated against reality all of their lives that they have no idea of what it takes to make a living and support a family in the real world. Most of the Democrat voting base are actually pretty conservative folks in real life but they like living off of YOUR MONEY. Don't assume most Democrat voters are liberal because, in fact, most of them are merely communists voting for those who they think will give them the most handouts or the most support for their UNION.

This editorial is just plain

This editorial is just plain strange.

So left bias isn't ok but right bias is?

The AC has the right to tell other newspapers what to do and what to publish?

It's ok for the AC to be strongly, admittedly conservative, but it's not ok for another paper to be liberal?

The AC can have freedom of the press, but nobody else can?

"A reporter is suposed to report a news story not spin a news story to fit their political bias!"

Would that be like the AC describing Jenny Sanford, who just happens to be dating Clay Boardman, as "popular"- is that an example of reporting facts?

Uh Corgimom-Is Jenny Sanford running for president? Who cares who Sanford dates and why is that relevant? This is an editorial not a news story! News stories are supposed to be free of prejudice which the "mainstream media" seemed to "forget" all the time! "WE DON"T REPORT ON THAT, THAT IS A CABLE STORY", in referance to ACORN!

I love it. The Dems control
Unpublished

I love it. The Dems control BOTH houses of congress AND the White House. The two wars they vowed to get us out of are still going on, and the recession Obama said would end as soon as we "redistribute the wealth" is still with us. In fact, it's pretty safe to say that the economy is in the toilet after the billions this congress has spent on "shovel ready projects," instead of giving the money directly to the taxpayers. But still, the liberals look at all this and rant that it's all the fault of Limbaugh, Fox News, and the Republicans. Oh, lest I forget, it's all RACIAL too! If y'all think you hear me laughing, it's only because I am.

Corgimom, your posts are not

Corgimom, your posts are not improving. Since the AC uses the AP for their news stories, often times without editing them, how does that make them conservative? Only the "opinion" editorials are conservative, for the most part. The ACES has a few lefties that write their views. Every now and then the editorials make no sense at all. That's when the lefties write.

I think the liberals are so

I think the liberals are so defensive because they know that this article, like so many others recently, are spot on, and the absolute truth. I can think of so many examples in the recent past to illustrate this but the most egregious was the all-out biased media attack on Sarah Palin, that was downright hateful, mean spirited and imho, a coordinated effort to discredit this woman in the worst display of negative press that I have ever witnessed. Shameful. Had any news media attacked anyone on the left in such a manner, they would have had many litters of kittens, and the racist, hate speak, PC police would have had hundreds of hours of media coverage on the smear attempt by the right. However, if the person is a conservative, then all is well, and you are free to publish your abject hatred, true or not, and blow everything out of proportion to your heart's content. Pathetic. Bashing Sarah has actually become an art form now, as every word out of her mouth sets the armies of liberal detractors and dirt diggers to work feverishly on how to label her in the most vile, negative and shameful way. Wait a minute....that almost sounds like what they do daily to Rush, Glenn, and wait.....Fox News! Yep..you guessed it. Publish nothing but hateful, despicable, negative news which continually attacks the character, words, beliefs, etc..of any person, or organization, and true or not, some will start to believe it. However, the folks on the left who do the same thing day after day, get no press whatsoever. Hmmm...double standard? You better believe it. Alive and well, and thriving in this atmosphere, nurtured by socialism, watered by hate, and broadcast daily by media hacks with their heart's set on only one thing which has absolutely nothing to do with accurate reporting of the news. Nope...but for those who don't already know what I am talking about, here is the quintessential definition of what it actually is: Character assassination. Some folks call it having an, "Agenda". Character assassination is an attempt to tarnish a person's reputation. It may involve exaggeration or manipulation of facts to present an untrue picture of the targeted person. Nothing more, nothing less.
