Our problems don't stand a chance

CSRA's Best and Brightest offer a wonderful glimpse of our future

"The problems of the world are not in my department."

-- Humphrey Bogart, Casablanca

Unlike Bogart's character, the problems of the world are in our department.

We write about them every day -- after researching them, discussing them, mulling them over and worrying about and even praying over them.

Sometimes it feels like the world is going nuts. Maybe it is. We suspect that many things are actually better than before -- and it's just that, with global communications and 24-hour news channels and the Internet, we're simply hearing and reading more about the craziness.

Still, some things do get worse -- unemployment, oil spills, terrorism, jingoistic regimes in Iran and North Korea and more. It can be daunting, evening sickening, this barrage of news today -- much of it bad or disturbing.

Then, all of a sudden, your world view is rocked -- in a very good way -- by the kind of young men and women we spent an evening recognizing for their achievements this week.

The area's 25 "Best and Brightest" high school seniors were celebrated by The Chronicle Monday night, with the five best -- according to a panel of three independent judges -- receiving cash awards.

You would be amazed, encouraged, proud and hopeful after meeting these bright and energetic young men and women -- some of the best their generation has to offer.

Many are headed for helping professions -- either as doctors and nurses or veterinarians or biomedical researchers who may help find the next big cure. All of them are headed for great things.

But all of them, too, see more than the man or woman in the mirror. To a person, this group of 25 have an eye on their fellow man. It truly is amazing: While most of us stumble awkwardly through our high school years just hoping not to develop a conspicuous pimple or attract a "kick me" sign, these kids are helping their peers or senior citizens, raising funds for charity -- and even starting their own humanitarian ventures.

Quentin Mays of Butler High coordinates events for the Downtown Development Authority and organizes its Saturday Market. In Blind Side fashion, Brenna Cook of Harlem High reached out to a fellow student living in poverty. Clayton Perry of Augusta Christian has made mission trips to Haiti. Megan Pugh of Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School sits with her elderly neighbor and tutors children. Maggie Bosley of South Aiken High organized South Carolina's first Make-A-Wish Foundation fund-raising dinner for children with life-threatening conditions.

Some in this Best and Brightest class have overcome immeasurable odds just to be in school, much less finish at the top -- including anorexia nervosa and abject poverty.

You can read more about these beautiful young lives in our Best and Brightest special section this Sunday.

Take it from us in the Problems of the World Department: If you feel weighed down by the news of the day, close your eyes, take a deep breath, and just imagine being in a room filled with young men and women of this caliber, as we were Monday night.

For one thing, they'll bring you hope just being in their presence. For another thing, we'll soon unleash them on all those problems. We're thinking the problems don't stand a chance.

Relax. We're in much better hands than we sometimes think.

OnlyinAgs, you have a real

OnlyinAgs, you have a real fetish about this Pulitzer Prize thing. Did you read about it somewhere and it struck your fancy or what?

The Pulitizer Prize sticks with the libs so who cares? In 2000 Philip Kennicott of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch won for his editorial campaign against the passage of a proposition to legally allow Missouri residents to carry concealed weapons.

Who needs a Pulitzer or Nobel

Who needs a Pulitzer or Nobel when you can just create a Georgia Press Association, and award yourself a grand prize for whatever category you can dream-up?! And even do it with a straight face.

Greedy seniors and lazy folks

Greedy seniors and lazy folks to support? I can see the lazy folks to support, but you need to remember those `greedy' seniors have been paying school taxes for a VERY long time, and guess what? Some never had children, and most of the others children have been out of school for 20 to 40 years.

Seniors congrats to all of

Seniors congrats to all of you for your dedication and hard work! Today should be the day you pat yourself on the back for your acheivments. You may of started the year off with 100's of students and some you will leave behind and it is ok. You have to grow and sometimes in that period of life as much as you would like to hold on to those friends they cannot take that journey with you. I wish you all many blessings and good luck.

Fannie Mae's and Freddie

Fannie Mae's and Freddie Mac's debt is greater than the debt of Greece, Spain, Portugal, and Ireland combined. These graduates better get to work. Everybody deserves a zero down, subsidized house which they don't have to make payments on if they choose. Think of it as Section 8 for everybody. I just hope the other people's money never runs out.......

And get to work fast! I

And get to work fast! I hope that they start first, working on this Oil Spill that Obama has let get out of control over the past 5 weeks now. If anyone else needed a reason to understand how worthless this President is, here is your reason. A reason that will last the rest of my lifetime, and the rest of anyone's lifetime reading this right now. That is how long this lasting, poisonous, noxious, and deadly Oil Spill and the effects of it is going to last.

OnlyinAgs states that the reason for anyone's political differences and objections with respect to how Obama has run this Country [straight into the ground], is exclusively because he is black. And that it is "hate," that exclusively drives our opinion. And I am referring to OnlyinAgs posts of 2:37, 2:39, and 2:43 p.m. on this day Wednesday, May 26, 2010.

Personally, and I can only speak for myself, but after reviewing the reasons that I feel Obama has been a completely incompetent President, i.e. Health Care, Immigration, Foreign Policy toward our enemies and our allies, especially Israel--versus the obviously venomous, sarcastic comments referred to above proclaimng that my singular reason for the dislike of the President's policies is racial in origin and thus hateful, I must say that I am faced with a decision which is completely "transparent" to me.
I sincerely hope now that as you are a personal witness to our Gulf being destroyed by the minute, and as you are witnessing a man who is in a position to do something about it, doing absolutely nothing, that you will join me in that decision and clear the slate in November for the express purpose of obtaining sufficient votes in order to impeach this OnlyinAgs's Devil.

fd1962: "Who needs a Pulitzer

fd1962: "Who needs a Pulitzer or Nobel when you can just create a Georgia Press Association, and award yourself a grand prize for whatever category you can dream-up?! And even do it with a straight face."

I think someone might be pulling fd1962’s leg about the Georgia Press Association. Apparently fd1962 thinks The Augusta Chronicle somehow created the GPA and awards itself prizes.

Twenty-five newspapers were represented at the first convention of the Georgia Press Association in 1887. The Chronicle was not one of those newspapers. Daily newspapers weren’t even allowed to join the GPA until 1918.

As for The Chronicle supposedly awarding itself prizes, the judging for GPA awards is done by journalists in other states. Judging for the most recent round of awards, for example, was done by the Texas Press Association.
