There was no discernible reason for Agnes Hughes to have made the news. She wasn't involved in any accident, crime or other public event that might have brought attention to her. Her day was like any other.
It's her attitude that made the news.
It's just that spectacular.
She's 91, she's been working most of her life, and currently she walks about five miles a day just to sort through donated clothes and greet visitors at Community Ministries of North Augusta.
Well, and to please her happy feet. She just can't possibly get enough. Of people. Of walking. Of helping. Of country songs during karaoke night at Mi Rancho. Of life.
"I like to work in donations because that's how I get to meet (people)," she told The Chronicle's Julia Sellers recently.
Her work at Community Ministries was her way of answering the death of her son Cecil some five years ago. Instead of withdrawing, she reached out. Instead of curling up under the clouds, she walked until she found the sun.
"I'm having too much fun," she says. "You know, life is short. You have to enjoy your life. I don't have time to get mad or sad. It's a time to be happy, and this is my time. My daughter thinks something's wrong with me because I'm always happy, but that's how I've always been. I can't help it. I'd rather be that way than be sad."
The thing is, she could help it. Her attitude is her choice alone. She apparently realized that some time ago, and chose the attitude she has today.
It's an attitude that inspired readers after her story appeared Monday.
"Truly, Miss Agnes has set an example of living and thriving. All of us, whatever age, can benefit by her outlook," wrote one.
That outlook isn't just contagious. It's liberating. Your attitude can drag you down -- or it can lift you above any and all circumstances, both internal and external. There's something beautifully defiant about the human spirit that allows us that freedom -- the freedom to decide how we look at life and how we respond to whatever life throws at us.
In that sense, Agnes Hughes may be the freest woman on the planet.
News? You bet. It's a huge story.
What a great story! I love it and God bless you Ms. Agnes!
91 years of being happy. How great is that! I hope she has many more happy years ahead. Maybe that is the key to longevity.
God Bless you, and this one is going out especially in your honor Ms. Agnes! May you have 91 more happy, and healthy years! OOOORAH!
May God bless you, I hope you always stay happy Agnes and it catchs on!
Selfless service to others. A great life lesson. Humans can survive without love, but they will die without "purpose".
The choice to be happy is one that has many connotations. Positive action as a result of positive intent that leads to Selflessness, Self confidence, and a sense of Self worth. ALL of these attitudes are in direct conflict with the victimhood attitude that is the foundation of the religion of the left (that so often leads to slavery). Atta Girl, Agnes Hughes. We see you and respect your attitude and your perspective. Thanks to the AC for holding up this fine example.
