President and unaccountable

Now even liberal media are complaining about Obama’s end run around press corps

  • Follow Editorials

"He got the best press known to man. Let's face it."

-- Former magazine editor Tina Brown

"In the history of civilization!"

-- Media critic Howard Kurtz

Agreed. So why has Barack Obama avoided facing the White House press corps in a formal press conference since last July?

It comes down to one word: Strategery.

Mr. Obama has found that he can control both the medium and the message by only agreeing to interviews with friendly journalists, of which there are plenty to be had. He is said to abhor Fox News Channel, for instance, and avoids it like the plague.

But now, even his fawning friends in the "mainstream" media are grumbling.

"The decision to bypass the White House press corps is no accident," says Kurtz, a Washington Post columnist and CNN commentator.

Once again, the White House is targeting friendly journalists so the president can interact totally on his own terms.

It may be just a coincidence, but the president hasn't faced the press corps as a group since his poorly-thought-out indictment of Cambridge police in the infamous Henry Gates case.

"A press corps that periodically complained about George W. Bush's infrequent news conferences should not let Obama walk away from the practice unchallenged," Kurtz writes.

With even the left-wing media complaining -- including ultra-liberal columnist Helen Thomas saying the president has gone "obscenely long" without a press conference -- expect one soon, beyond the impromptu one Tuesday. But it's clear that nothing defines this administration -- in both policy and process -- so much as the term "control freaks."

Dashiel--I think what he is saying is that President Obama is afraid to face anyone in the press that does not agree with everything that Obama says; thus, the President has not had a formal Press Conference with the White House Press Corps lately.

How is Obama different from

How is Obama different from other presidents in this manner? Manipulating the press is the job of one of his czar/advisers. Not making the press happy seems par for the course. The questions from "friendly" interviewers are starting to sound more like Chris Wallace and less like Katie Couric. It's part of the job. Obama can't make his Marxist agenda look like anything else. People are finally noticing.

Nat, think back to when SARAH

Nat, think back to when SARAH emerged from her Myspace/Facebook cocoon and started letting people see her again. She appeared on all of the obligatory Fox shows and the moderators fed her all the lines she needed. Glenn Beck nearly got gutted because he threw her a hard question that she wasn't prepared for. I guess he didn't get the memo.

Sean Hannity took her by the hand and led her through their "interview" by telling her all about the issue and asking "Isn't that bad?" All SARAH had to do was nod in agrement. How much friendlier a of media "journalist" can you find?

As far as the hand thing, every President since teleprompters came into acceptance has used one. If we are to criticize Mr. Obama then we have to criticize Bush 2, Clinton, Bush 1, Reagan, etc.

Someone telling Mr. Obama what he thinks? Do you know this for sure? Did you see it with your own eyes? Or did you just suppose because it fits an agenda (How "Rush" of you :) )? Every sitting President has used speech writers and advisors to craft their remarks. We can truly say that W departed from this occasionally because some of the things he came up with no professional speech writer would ever have dared to put on paper. Before teleprompters they used written scripts to ensure that they got their ideas expressed completely and as desired.

These barbs are all childish. They are the stuff of playground banter. They should have stayed there. Yet, SARAH had to go throwing them around. Then she got caught with crib notes. OOPS!

This "issue" should be put back onto the playground where it belongs and the adults in the room move on.

I guess calling Obama a boy is something Irish can be proud of, she probably call a lot of other black men boys. Some stuff posters say here is sad, again, she says it ONLINE she wouldn't in anybody's face. Talk about the luck of the Irish LOL.

I'm glad most readers who still get a hard copy of the chronicle can only read the editorials and LTEs from their hard copy in front of them and not the daily hate for Obama online. If many were to read what's being allowed to be said online, the sales for the chronicle would drop even more.

Why is it considered "hating"

Why is it considered "hating" Obama when you point out the numerous faults he has, and the FACT that he is a Marxist? I have asked on several occasions for someone to list something he has done that has helped the country, but so far no one has done it.......they just Blame Bush, and say he hasn't had long enough.

Obama wasn’t actually giving

Obama wasn’t actually giving a speech to 6th graders at the time, as incorrectly stated in the headline on the photo that was e-mailed to us, and in many conservative blogs. The picture (taken by Associated Press photographer Alex Brandon) actually shows Obama speaking to reporters in a classroom at the Graham Road Elementary School in Falls Church, Va., on Jan. 19. Obama had spoken to the students themselves earlier, and he did not use a teleprompter then.

Okay, Tigger, what 6th grade

Okay, Tigger, what 6th grade assembly involved a teleprompter?

Other than a generic rant, give a specific regarding when a teleprompter was used to answer an honest question. Do you know the question?

Obama, Marxist, fact? And how do you know this AS A FACT? Do you have inside acccess to the White house or do you use some sort of extra-sensory gift?

I don't mean to belittle but, if you are going to cite FACTS then please provide the proof. You may wholeheartedly believe what you say but that doesn't make it a fact.

Is the Obama agenda Socialist? You obviously think so and I respect your right to hold that opinion. That doesn't give you the right to throw out FACTS that you can't prove. Maybe you look at all of the signs and divine the underlying meaning to be that the agenda is Socialist and President Obama is a Marxist. The problem with that is you are filling in a lot of blanks. What are you filling those blanks with? Your opinion?

To many 2 + 2 = 100. We can see the 4 that are there. the other 96 are stuff that "we just know." Unfortunately that stuff "we just know" is too often incorrect.

Oh, and as far as Robert

Oh, and as far as Robert Gibbs mocking Palin from the Presidential Pulpit, Unless I missed something (and I might have) Robert Gibbs was not elected President. That means he speaks form somewhere other than a Presidential Pulpit.

As I said before, the whole barb belongs with young children on the playground, not mature adults engaging in political discourse. She should not have thrown it out there. It just showed that she is not the kind of perosn we need running this country. Mr. Gibbs had his fun at her expense. Was that appropriate coming form the White House or should he have left that to the late night comics?

Unfortunately, when the someone starts taking cheap shots you eventually have to defend yourself. Mr. Gibbs made his point. It is unfortunate that he did it at Palin's expense. I would have hoped for better.

She says she is ready. I hope this isn't what she means. If it is then I hope the Conservatives in whatever form have the good sense not to put her back out there for another run. That would be too painful to watch.

Just a partial list of Pres.

Just a partial list of Pres. Obama's accomplishments:1) $2,500 tax credit to help offset the cost of tuition (among other expenses) for those seeking a college education. Nearly five million families are expected to save $9 billion, according to Treasury officials.
2)Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009 put under federal protection more than two million acres of wilderness, thousands of miles of river and a host of national trails and parks.
3)Instituted enforcement for equal pay for women
4)Families of fallen soldiers have expenses covered to be on hand when the body arrives at Dover AFB
5)Ended the previous stop-loss policy that kept soldiers in Iraq/Afghanistan longer than their enlistment date
6)Phasing out the expensive F-22 war plane and other outdated weapons systems, which weren't even used or needed in Iraq/Afghanista.
7)Removed restrictions on embryonic stem-cell research
8)The missile defense program is being cut by $1.4 billion in 2010
9)Restarted the nuclear nonproliferation talks and building back up the nuclear inspection infrastructure/protocols
10)Expanded the SCHIP program to cover health care for 4 million more children
11)Closed offshore tax safe havens
12)Negotiated deal with Swiss banks to permit US government to gain access to records of tax evaders and criminals
13)Ended the previous practice of protecting credit card companies; in place of it are new consumer protections from credit card industry's predatory practices
14)Increasing pay and benefits for military personnel

orgpsych- Watching Obama and

orgpsych- Watching Obama and his hubis talk about cutting world poverty in one half, closing Gitmo, ending ear marks, reforming health care, bankrupting coal fired power plants, creating a civilian force equivalant to the US military, having health care reform discussions on C span, trying terrorists in New York (ain't gonna happen) etc etc was embarrising. Having Obama apologize for America, beg other countries to take Gitmo prisoners (that worked well didn't it), allowing Iran to get well on the way to developing nukes, having Obama lampooned in the British press as President Pantywaist, paying Palau millions of dollars to take 14 gitmo detainees, siding with the dictators and thugs in Hounduras and Iran ..all pathetic..If Axlrod, Jerrat, and Gibson had inked on thier hands the number of jobs created and saved by Obama they would not have looked like idiots on the Sunday morning news shows each giving differant numbers.. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
