Heaping helpings of hate

  • Follow Editorials

We applaud President Obama for calling for a new era of civility. It's badly needed.

We would simply point out that the president should start with his own liberal base -- whose hateful rhetoric has become utterly unhinged.

The bile dripping from their mouths has become too much to ignore, even if you try. Examples are proliferating with each turn of the calendar, but here are just a few:

- MSNBC's Keith Olbermann called Massachusetts Republican senatorial candidate Scott Brown "an irresponsible, homophobic, racist, reactionary, ex-nude model, teabagging supporter of violence against women and against politicians with whom he disagrees."

What a string of slime! ("Teabagging," by the way, is a slang term for an obscene act -- and all the liberals who use the term to describe patriotic anti-big-government protesters know that.)

- The same network's David Shuster said if Fox News host Glenn Beck's house caught on fire, the fire department should let it burn down.

- Liberal talk radio host Mike Malloy said this: "I have good news to report; Glenn Beck appears closer to suicide -- I'm hoping that he does it on camera; suicide is rampant in his family, and given his alcoholism and his tendencies towards self-destruction, I am only hoping that when Glenn Beck does put a gun to his head and pulls the trigger, that it's on television, because somebody will capture it on YouTube and it will be the most popular video for months."

Could that be any more out of line or vitriolic, personal or mean-spirited?

- Adds Bill Maher: "It is not that long before we're going to find Glenn Beck dressed as a woman or playing with his feces or something."

- About the pro-life Super Bowl ad to feature Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, Kierra Johnson, executive director of Choice USA, says, "This un-American hate doesn't have a place in this all-American pastime."

Un-American hate? Because he is happy his mom gave birth to him? That's just irrational.

Watch the Super Bowl. View the ad. Then write to us at letters@augustachronicle.com. Tell us if you think it was hateful and un-American.

There's hate speech out there, all right.

And now you know where it's coming from.

There's hate speech out

There's hate speech out there, but none so vitriolic as the everyday conversation of left wing broadcasters and posters. It changed from occasional fringe pot-shots to their only form of broadcasting after the Anita Hill exposure on national television. Miss Hill lied to congress during the Clarance Thomas nomination hearing and admitted to the lies and was rewarded by receiving a full professorship to the University of Colorado and endless speaking engagements where she was paid ridiculous sums of money. Since that time, no left wing broadcaster or writer has felt compelled to tell the truth about any situation at any time. Ugly has become the word of the day for all of them.

A slime editorial. The writer failed to mention the conservative talk show pundits who spew hateful comments daily.
Mr. Editor, be objective and give the full story.

I've been wondering how the MSNBC trio would react to the president's suggestion. I see liberal posters who justify the liberal TV hosts by saying conservative hosts do it also, but I don't see examples of anything the conservatives have said that is similar to what Matthews, Olberman and Maddow spew with spittle dripping down their chins almost nightly. The Chronicle gave many quotes of the liberal excesses. Can anyone give an example of Beck, O'Reily or Hannity coming close to such vitriolic hatred?

Jow Willie, I am not sure

Jow Willie, I am not sure what you are smoking, but as a Blue Dog Democratic supporter, it must be some good ganja my freind. We (Democratic supporters) are going to get our rear-ends handed to us in the Fall elections and we can thank Pelosi and Reid for that. Obama's not to blame as much as those two, who shoved the agenda so far left that the American voter is now having buyers remorse. How can we screw up a SUPER MAJORITY!?!?!?!? 'Form up the firing squad in a circle again!'

This problem extends beyond

This problem extends beyond the fringe MSNBC hosts. There is a double standard. Did anyone hear Barbara Walters' interview with Scott Brown? She started with, "Mr. Brown, you were arrested for shoplifting at 11 years old and you posed nude for Cosmo at 22." Do you think she would start an interview with Obama about his admitted drug use when he was younger? Obama said in his book, "Dreams From My Father," that he had used marijuana and cocaine ("maybe a little blow"). He said he didn't try heroin because the pusher was a bad guy.

seenit84, you don't differentiate between "news" and "opinion"? I do. I expect opinion to be biased, it's opinion. News, on the other hand, I expect to be unbiased. CNN just finished cleaning house by firing ALL personnel that didn't pay homage to the far left agenda every time they reported the "news". The once famous news station has become an infamous opinion station, like MSNBC.

Also, Obama ought to take his own advice and speak to his speech writers. His comments about stupid white policemen and his endless whining about the incompetence of the previous administration, (you know, the one he's been emulating for the past year), don't do much for "civility".

Well this will certainly be

Well this will certainly be an interesting thread to watch today. I expect nothing but the same "Mommy, mommy, he hit me first!" or "Everybody does it" type of playground "deflection attempts" from the progressives and fringe liberals. Candidate Obama promised to change business as usual on Capitol Hill and be the great unifier. How is that working out for everybody? This endless crap about "Well Bush did...." or "Well Trent Lott said....." isn't going to fly to explain away the endless lies and lip service from this administration.

Only weak minds and

Only weak minds and politicians (redundant?) seek the guidance of the pundits this editorial quotes. For over an hour on Friday President Obama--without benefit of speechwriters or Teleprompter--fielded questions from several intelligent Republicans. I thought it was a sincere exchange with both sides meeting more than half way, yet less than an hour later, media from the left was hyping it as "Obama in the Lions Den" and the right was calling it another one of Obama's misleading "performances." We don't elect pundits. This editorial goes right to the heart of the "sourness" source. Now I would welcome a Chronicle editorial that responsibly addresses the gentlemanly concord and stimulating debate that I witnessed from Baltimore on Friday. The woods is full of loud egomaniacs who crave our viewership. They are a cancer on the body politic. Read The Congressional Record. If you're too lazy to read, watch C-Span. Otherwise, join the loud and aggressive chorus in their handbasket to hell.

One other thing to note is that the scarce bi-partisan meetings always receive extensive press coverage while the ones in private with only democrat political supporters are barely mentioned in the main stream media.

Yeah, I know where it's coming from, Chronicle, Rush Lumbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, and, sometimes, The Augusta Chronicle. I'm sure you'd have no trouble finding outrageous, hateful comments from the above if you weren't so partisan...

Pot, meet kettle -- the

Pot, meet kettle -- the "bile" began "dripping" from Rush Limbaugh's mouth, and soon other conservative commentators learned that incivility is good for ratings. I've never heard David Shuster or any MSNBC commentator make comments as vile as those of Michael Savage. I've always picked up a copy of the Chronicle when I'm in Augusta, but if this is your idea of balanced reporting, I'll just stick with USA TODAY next time.

Brad, you need too get your head out of your butt. I agree with about Pelosi and Reed but they are just a couple of idiots. But NOBODY is further left than Obama. Read his books, I read the first and that was all I could stand. He blames the white man for all the bad in the world and wants what he calls ‘social justices’. Obama said the Supreme Court did not go for enough on the civil rights movement. He said ‘they didn’t address economic issue of spreading the wealth’.

BetanInyoe, the most

BetanInyoe, the most egregious example is when Rush mocked Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's symptoms. Making fun of someone who can't control their actions due to a disease isn't nice. One would think that Rush's heart scare in Hawaii might cause him to think about how he'll explain what he's contributed to society when he faces his maker.

I watch Beck almost every day

I watch Beck almost every day and he has never attached anyone personally. He does attach the liberals/progressives politics. The reason the left hate him so much is because he has their number and is the only one on TV that will tell the truth. There is a big difference between criticizing someone’s politics and calling them names and wishing them harm. Beck has had to hire extra body guards because of threats against him.
