Letter: Don't use race as wedge

After reading the Nov. 13 article “We’ve got to stop this,” I have to speak out.

The mother of Jerald Carter Jr. says, “We’ve got to stop this” and goes on to say “We can’t keep killing our children, our brothers, our sisters.” I agree with that, and that is positive and encouraging for all parents. Parents need to be involved in all aspects of their children’s lives, especially teenagers.

But then she adds, “Just from the color of our skin, they’re already against us, so we have to stay together.” Who are “they,” and what was the color of the skin of all the people involved in the shooting that night?

I am a white, middle-aged male and have never shot or harmed anyone of any color, but so many times when an incident like this happens, some people want to blame someone besides themselves. There are many problems in society today, but stop trying to use racism as the main cause.
