What does it mean to be an American? To stand for freedom? To combat the injustices life presents us? A closer definition, for most, would be to stand for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. So, as Americans, why would we not want other humans in this world to enjoy the same liberties as we do in this amazing nation we call home?
We Americans have common ground with the Palestinians. We fought for our freedom and the right to exist just as they have been fighting. The difference is we are, and have been, supporting the occupiers. Imagine if France had backed England during the Revolutionary War. America likely would not be in existence today just as Palestine isn’t (according to Western nations).
This is just one reason it is un-American to support the Israeli regime.
The idea that some Jewish people need a place to call home is antiquated and misunderstood. Jewish people live everywhere, and usually in relative peace with the surrounding people. Israel is the exception. Illegal Jewish settlers accompanied by the Israeli government and the Israeli Defense Forces have stolen land, homes, lives, resources and even basic human rights from the Palestinians. The genocide that has been happening in Gaza, and what is left of the West Bank, is a modern-day atrocity that has been supported by Western governments since 1947.
Dare I mention the amount of the United States’ money that is being given away to Israel? And Americans receive no benefits from it. To date, Israel has been given $121 billion in aid alone! Imagine where our country would be if that money had been invested back into this nation we all call home.
Just as the world boycotted South Africa until they ended apartheid, we need to do the same for Israel. I say “for” Israel because, until the world stands up to this bully and its supporters, the Palestinian people will never know freedom or justice.
