Augusta Commissioner Marion Williams (“Commissioner wants residency requirement for city employees,” Jan. 10) needs to think back a few years. He and I were on the Augusta Fire Department in the late 1960s and early ’70s. We all had to live in Richmond County at least.
I bought a house in Columbia County, and was told by then-Chief James Fitzgerald that I had to make a decision – my job, or where I lived. I talked with an attorney, who advised me to go ahead and buy the house. The county could not make it work then, and it won’t work today. Lots of luck, Mr. Williams. I don’t see it happening.
I retired from the Augusta Fire Department 17 years ago, and I still am living in that little house.
