Animal event was a success

Augusta Animal Services, with the help of its advisory board and lots of friends, put on a wildly successful Family Fun Day adoption event Sept. 28.

Though it was a bit windy early on, the weather was absolutely perfect. The cooperation of all the rescue groups, vendors, staff and volunteers highlighted the community support for animal rescue work, and the importance of networking. The generosity of all the donors was invaluable.

The amazing thing is that 30 animals – 28 dogs and two cats – went home on this one day, and that is really amazing. Twenty-seven were adopted, two were taken in by rescues and one was returned to his owner.

Volunteers and guests were treated to demonstrations with dog trainers, games, prizes, refreshments, discounted microchipping on sight, face-painting, photo sessions, music and announcements by a DJ throughout the day. Responsible pet ownership was the topic of the day, encouraging people to spay and neuter their pets, as well as preparing for emergency and disaster situations.

Low-cost clinics were well-represented, as were dog obedience trainers. There was even a doggie playground set up to entertain dogs that accompanied their families to the event. The children in attendance had a blast playing in the doggie playground, as well as with all the games set up for them.

I send sincere thanks to everyone who participated in this event. It was very successful, by every measure, and we are determined to repeat it annually and possibly twice annually. If you missed this one, plan to participate in the next Family Fun Day.

Community support and involvement are key factors in our endeavor to be able to improve the lives of companion animals in the CSRA.
