Unfortunately, since CSRA Happy Tails Animal Rescue has had its license suspended for a year, I think the euthanization rate at all area shelters will rise. Until the state takes a proactive approach to our growing problem of pet overpopulation, these statistics will continue to be appalling.
Mandatory sterilization would help curb the hundreds of thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens born every year because of irresponsible pet owners. Since the Georgia Department of Agriculture has been reluctant to engage in dialogue on this issue, it is up to local governments to enact legislation.
In the meantime, rescue groups such as Happy Tails will continue to provide support and education for pet owners to voluntarily sterilize their pets. Be part of the solution – spay and neuter! Contact local officials and advocate for legislation to help protect our wonderful companion animals.
