In reading the article in The Augusta Chronicle regarding the James Holmes mass murder in Aurora, Colo., I can’t help but believe that for our court and legal system to consider a plea bargain would be a total failure to the justice Americans expect and deserve.
For the court to even entertain a plea bargain from an individual such as Holmes is total lunacy.
If ever there was a person guilty of the crimes charged to him, Holmes without question is. Justice should be applied swiftly and to the extreme as it fits the crime.
The cold hard truth is that there are some people who simply need killing.
You might argue that this individual should not be held responsible for his crimes because he may have been suffering from some level of insanity. Well of course he is insane.
This crime was planned for some time beforehand, and he was very prepared to deliver a massive impact. The biggest surprise to him is that he is still alive to now rub our noses in it.
Why should taxpayers bear the burden of paying for his cost of living expenses for the rest of his life when he will never be a contributor to our free society? You may argue that he will be locked away and never again be a threat to our society, but is that true justice? Of course not – appropriate justice no less than the extent of the crime is owed to the families of the victims that will relive this horror every day for the rest of their lives.
If our courts were to live up to their responsibilities to the citizens of America and deliver swift and decisive justice, it would send a message to other individuals plotting to commit similar insane acts.
