Recently, Augusta lost one of its premier matriarchs, and it will be a long time before anyone can dedicate themselves to family and community at the same time as did Marie Battey Bush.
“Frenchie” was one of a kind.
For 37 of her 85 years, I watched her go to early Mass, return home to work in her beautiful garden, cook, shop, remember friends who needed her, be attentive to six grown children and many grandchildren and pray twice a day – all with equal dedication.
When we gathered recently to celebrate a glorious life, her garden was an explosion of color. She would have smiled knowing that our early spring opened the gates of Heaven so she could take her place.
