Start water safety young

I commend the Richmond County school board for approving swimming lessons for all Richmond County second-grade pupils. I also applaud the Family Y for making this possible at no cost to participants.

As a former water safety instructor and lifeguard, I know the benefits of swimming skills and water safety instruction. In addition to improving coordination and increasing physical activity, knowing how to swim improves a child’s self-esteem.

I encourage all parents to allow their children to participate in this program, and remind them to practice water safety year-round.
