A regent for Augusta

James M. Hull is an ideal voice for higher education
Augusta businessman and philanthropist James M. Hull has been named to the Georgia Board of Regents. He is the first Augustan in six years to serve on the board.

There’s finally a seat at the table.

And a good man to fill it.

It’s been six years, though it seems a lot longer, since someone from the Augusta area – the state’s second-largest city – was on the Georgia Board of Regents.

That conspicuous, dreary void was filled last week when Gov. Nathan Deal named Augusta businessman and philanthropist James M. Hull to the board.

Hull’s good works, his good name and his limitless dedication to higher education – the James M. Hull College of Business at the former Augusta State University is named for him – make him a fabulous choice to represent Augusta.

His selection is so good that Gov. Deal was asked if the appointment of Hull was a bouquet to Augusta after a very bruising consolidation of Augusta State and the Medical College of Georgia into “Georgia Regents University.” This community, which has to live with it more than anyone, still holds its nose at that name.

“I’m looking for the best people I can find for these very important positions,” Deal answered.

So be it. In Hull, he found one of those people. We heartily applaud the governor for it.

Still, mending fences is not a bad idea, either.

The name “Georgia Regents University,” which was foisted on us all for the consolidated university, is no less a clunker today than the day it was approved; indeed, it’s an insult that keeps on insulting. Nor is this a provincial position: Even respondents in a national survey, which the state commissioned and then promptly ignored, much preferred “The University of Augusta” or some incarnation of it.

So did this estimable region of the state.

We commend the governor for seeing the need for this appointment of an Augusta-area regent.

We hope the state and his fellow regents also will see the value in listening to him.
