LONG BEACH, N.Y. - Isaac "Ike" Henderson, 89, of Long Beach, N.Y., died October 25, 2011 at Grandell Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Graveside services were held October 26, 2011 at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Flushing, N.Y., with Rabbi Zalman Fischer officiating. A native of Baltimore, Mr. Henderson lived in Augusta for 45 years before moving to Riverdale, N.Y. two years ago, and then to Long Beach in September of this year. He was employed as a pharmacy technician for the Pharmacy Department of University Hospital in Augusta for 20 years. Mr. Henderson was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and served in the military for 20 years. He was a founding member and supporter of Chabad of Augusta. He had been a member of Adas Yeshurun Synagogue in Augusta for over 30 years. He was a volunteer supervisor for the synagogue's NCSY youth group programs. He was also a member of the Augusta Jewish Community Center and the Augusta Jewish Federation. Mr. Henderson was an Orthodox Jew who faithfully maintained his religious observance. He was very learned in the Torah, Jewish law, biblical interpretations and commentaries, and Jewish history. He often answered questions on biblical matters with a photographic memory of details. He loved books of Jewish learning and had an extensive collection of them. Before leaving Augusta, he generously distributed his collection to various members of the Jewish community. Mr. Henderson regularly visited the sick and elderly shut-ins. He also regularly drove many elderly persons to their medical appointments and grocery stores. He helped numerous people of all religions and was very generous in giving to charities of all types. One of the many people Mr. Henderson befriended said of him, "He didn't have any children, but in a way, he had children all over the world". Survivors include his dear friends Terry Liebowitz of Augusta; Michael and Sylvia Teplitsky of Cedarhurst, N.Y.; and many other cherished friends.
