AIKEN, S.C. - Donald Howard Thomas, 86, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2011, his wife at his side. Son of the late Edward Anderson and Emma Bertha Erickson Thomas, Mr. Thomas was born in Steele, ND. He was predeceased by his first wife Cleo O'Brien, three sons, Terry, Mark, and Daniel Thomas, and daughter Julie Thomas Roe. Mr. Thomas served in the United States Marine Corps Reserves, retiring as Lt. Colonel. He worked at the Savannah River Plant for E. I. DuPont, retiring in 1987 as Area Superintendent in Separations Engineering. Survivors include daughter Susan (Knox) Gilmore, Gainesville, FL, and son Jeffrey Thomas, Salt Lake City, UT. Also surviving are his wife of 31 years, Joy Hilsman Thomas of Aiken; daughters, Brea (Kevin) McClain and Tara (John) Cataldo, both of Kernersville, NC.; thirteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Funeral services at Noon Wednesday at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home, Aiken. Graveside services Thursday at 2:00 PM at Beaufort National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Cedar Creek Church, 301 Banks Mill Road, Aiken, SC 29803, or to a ministry of one's choosing.
