AIKEN, S.C. - A funeral, outside of Mass for Douglas Wilhelm will take place on Thursday, September 29, 2011 at 11:30 am at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Aiken. The family will receive friends after the funeral at Smith Hall, adjacent the church. Interment at Calvary Cemetery will be private for the family. Doug, 56, of Aiken, died Monday, September 26, 2011 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Doug received an undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1976 and a MBA from the University of South Carolina in 1979. He was employed by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions for 35 years as a mechanical engineer, holding several management positions. Doug was a communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #3684, Aiken and a youth basketball coach. He was a Board Member and Past President of both the Help Line of Aiken and the Aiken Sunrise Rotary Club, where he was recognized as the Rotarian of the year, 2005-2006. Doug enjoyed sports, especially golf, where he used that passion as a volunteer for the First Tee of Aiken. He loved to travel and spent most of his vacation time at the beach. Weekends were spent either at Palmetto Golf Club where he was a member or tailgating with family and friends prior to football games. Doug's biggest love was his family; Sunday afternoons were spent with his grandchildren playing outside on the swings or inside playing games. Being called (Grandpa) was one of his favorite honors. He is survived by his loving wife of thirty-three years, Navia Bacon Wilhelm, Aiken; a son, Kevin (Keri) Wilhelm, Aiken; a daughter, Nicole (Louis) Simmons, Aiken; his parents, David(s)and(s)Mary Lou Wilhelm, Hilton Head Island, SC; two brothers, Donald Wilhelm, New York City, NY and Daniel (Susan) Wilhelm, Pittsburg, PA and five grandchildren, Kellsey Simmons, Madelyn Simmons, Meredith Simmons, Hyatt Wilhelm and Mason Wilhelm. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Lenora Bacon of Beech Island, SC, brother in law, William T Bacon and sister in law Nellie Bacon of North Augusta, and 3 nieces and 2 nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Tee of Aiken, Help Line of Aiken, or Aiken Sunrise Rotary.
