WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Robert (Bob) Leonard Hammond, Sr., 57, of West Palm Beach, Florida, passed away September 20th, 2011 at 10 p.m. He was born to the late James Thomas Hammond, Sr. and (Lillie) Mae Hammond at Good Samaritan Hospital on December 23, 1953 in West Palm Beach, FL. Robert graduated from Palm Beach High School and also attended Palm Beach Junior College and received an AP in business. Robert was an Entomologist at the Southeast Georgia Experiment Station at Midville, Ga. He was a teacher of the mentally challenged, correction officer, horticultural specialist and lecturer in the South Central Georgia area, and Curator of the Burke County Museum. He was President of the Burke County Historical Society, Founder and Vice- President of the Burke County Genealogical Society, and also Author and compiler of Family History. Robert was awarded the Judah P. Benjamin Certificate from the Daughters of the Confederacy for preserving the history of Burke County as a speaker, writer, curator, researcher, and a community leader. Robert loved the outdoors, plants, trees, and flowers. He loved to grow different things that was his passion. Robert was an active member of First Baptist Church of Midville, Ga. where he sang in the choir and led worship sometimes. He loved to play the guitar. He was lead singer of a gospel trio called the Sowers from 1974 to 1978. Robert is survived by three children: Robert L. Hammond Jr. of West Palm Beach, FL; Amber Hammond Weeks of Waynesboro, Ga, and step-son, Chris D. Robinson of Bartow, GA. He also is survived by three grandchildren, Robert L. Hammond III, Ryan Hammond, and Nathan Weeks; and by four siblings, James Hammond, Tommy Hammond, Ed Hammond, and Beverly Powell. We all will miss you, but you will never be forgotten.
