Dorothy Mae Whiting (MARTINEZ, Ga.)

MARTINEZ, Ga. - died peacefully on Saturday night, August 29, 2011. She was 89 years young. Dorothy Mae Caroline Waller LaBon Whiting. She was born in 1921 and was raised in Oak Park, IL, where she and her only brother, George Waller, lived right across the street from Oak Park Elementary School. In 1942, she graduated from the University of Michigan as a Registered Nurse and married Vincent V. LaBon Sr. They had 3 children (Vincent V. LaBon, Jr and Steven W. LaBon, who survive her and Beth Ann LaBon Martin who died in 2009). She found friends in each of the many places she lived around the U.S. In 1974, she married Willard Wake Whiting and moved to Hawaii. Two of her step-children, Steven Whiting and Leilani Conley, survive her. Three of her step children, Charles Whiting, Joyce Melson, and Madeline Matschichelian, predeceased her. Following her husband's death, she moved to Webster, TX and cared for her mother until her death. She established an Ostomy Clinic in League City, TX and ran it until she moved to San Antonio, TX to live next to, and care for, her daughter, Ann Martin. Following Ann's death, she moved to Augusta, GA to be close to her son, Vince LaBon. She was active and alert right up until the end. She loved, and was loved by; God, her family, her friends, and her beautiful plants. Her ashes will be interred next to Willard Whiting in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific of Honolulu, HI.
