Michael Garth Peterson (MARTINEZ, Ga.)

MARTINEZ, Ga. - Entered into rest Wednesday July 27, 2011 at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Mr. Michael Garth Peterson, 63, husband of Mrs. Patrice Sogge Peterson of Martinez, Ga. Mr. Peterson was a native of Fargo, ND. He enlisted in the US Army at the age of 19. He served in Vietnam as a medic and after 23 years of service he retired. After retirement Mr. Peterson began a career at the Augusta State Medical Prison where he worked in mental health, then retired after 18 years. He was an accomplished swimmer. In his youth he won three state championships. At the age of 52 he won numerous medals at the Georgia Olympics. Mr. Peterson was a very loving and giving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Family members in addition to his wife include daughters: Amanda Carr and husband Lester, Melissa Testino and husband Brian; son: Michael Clayton Peterson; grandchildren: Clinton Peterson, Bryce Carr, Breanna Testino, Foster Testino; brothers: Frank Peterson and wife Lue, twin brother Mitchell Peterson and wife Linda; sister: Claudia Peterson and many loved nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all of the chaplains, nursing staff and team of doctors at Eisenhower Army Medical Center for their compassionate care, especially Dr. Sean Javaheri. We have been truly blessed by each and every one of you. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with Pastor Billy Atkins officiating. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Andy Cheek, Aldon Cheek, Clinton Peterson, Bryce Carr, Lester Carr, and Brian Testino.
