STAPLETON, Ga. - With his family by his side, Elbert Medford Newsome, 81, loving husband of 56 years to Marguerite Perdue Newsome, peacefully entered into his eternal home Tuesday morning, June 21, 2011 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta GA after recent lengthy stays at University and Select Specialty Hospitals in Augusta. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday morning, June 25, 2011 at James Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Larry Montgomery officiating. Interment will follow in the Stapleton Baptist Church Cemetery in Stapleton GA. Elbert was born to the late Mollie Lamb Newsome and the late Elbert Henderson Newsome in Glascock County. A member of Stapleton Baptist Church for most of his married life, he grew up in the Bethel Community where his family attended Bethel United Methodist Church. Known affectionately as "Junior" to some and "Cornstalk" to many, Elbert was very proud of his family and sought to make everyone feel welcome. He spent over 30 years working on the pipelines of Southern Natural Gas Company (now El Paso Energy). He and his wife ran a farm and managed properties while each holding other jobs. He was mayor of Stapleton for six years in the late sixties and early seventies. Now pain-free in his Heavenly home, Elbert will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Elbert is also preceded in death by four brothers, Dillon Newsome, Norman Newsome, Emery Newsome and James Newsome. Other survivors include his daughter, Mollie N. Sudhoff (Stephen) of Glencoe IL; a grandson, Peter Charles Newsome Sudhoff; a brother, Chansley Newsome (Rosie) of Monroe GA; a sister-in-law, Ethel Newsome; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Pallbearers will be Smith D. Dickson, Oliver R. Gay, John J. Jones, George Pope, James R. Sutton, Sr., James Robert Sutton, Jr., and Jimmy Willoughby. The family request memorial contributions be made to Myasthenia Gravis Foundation, P.O. Box 93604, Atlanta GA 30318, or to Stapleton Baptist Church, c/o Anthony Lamb, P.O. Box 146, Stapleton GA 30823. The family will receive friends at the residence and/or at James Funeral Home, 630 N. Main Street, Wrens GA 30833, this evening, Friday, June 24, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 P.M.
