AUGUSTA, Ga. - Graveside Services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Davenport Vaughn, 98, wife of the late Mr. James Carleton Vaughn, of Augusta, Georgia, who entered rest June 4, 2011 will be conducted Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Dr. G. Daniel McCall and Dr. R. Leslie Holmes officiating. Mrs. Vaughn was the daughter of the late Robert Campbell and Louise Bailey Davenport of North Augusta. She attended public schools in North Augusta and was a 1931 graduate of Tubman High School. Mrs. Vaughn graduated from Converse College in 1935 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and earned her Masters of Library Science from Emory University at Oxford in 1936. She married James Carleton Vaughn on June 18, 1940. Mrs. Vaughn served as the librarian at the Junior College of Augusta, now Augusta State University. Additionally, she served as Librarian of the Georgia State Society NSDAR, as a founding Regent of the Martintown Road Chapter NSDAR, as South Carolina State Regent NSDAR, and as Vice-President General NSDAR. She also served on the Board of Trustees of the Tamassee DAR School and Children's Home in Tamassee, SC, and on the Board of Trustees of the Old Exchange Building in Charleston, SC. Mrs. Vaughn was also a member of the Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, the Daughters of the Confederacy, the Richmond County Historical Society, and the Richmond County Genealogical Society. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church of North Augusta where she taught Sunday School for 62 years. After moving to Augusta, she joined Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church where she served as President of the Women of the Church and an Adult Sunday School Teacher. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, J. Carleton and Billie Vaughn, Jr., Augusta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Louise and Maxwell Vallotton, Augusta, and Elizabeth and Kenneth Sharpe, Mt. Pleasant, SC; 12 grandchildren, J. Carleton Vaughn, III (Marjorie), E. Campbell Vaughn (Ruthie), Louise V. Joyner (Richard), J. Maxwell Vallotton, Jr. (Allison), Elizabeth V. Yarbrough (Jim), Emily D. Eling (Adam), R. Allan Sharpe, Sarah P. Sharpe, John Thornton, IV (Maryanna), Andrew Thornton, Bradford Thornton (Neely), and Virginia Merrill (Brett); 9 great-grandchildren, Stanley Vaughn, Joshua Vaughn, Edwin Vaughn, Cannon Joyner, Jim Yarbrough, Mary Louise Yarbrough, Joe Yarbrough, Liam Thornton and McClure Thornton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 5 until 7. Memorials may be made to the Christian Relief Fund, 405 Telfair Street, Augusta, GA 30901.
