COLUMBIA, S.C. - Miriam Togneri Posey was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior on Friday, April 29, 2011. Visitation will be Sunday, May 1, 2011, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. On Monday, May 2, there will be a private family burial followed by a memorial service celebrating her life at Centennial Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (1413 Laurel Street) at 3 p.m. Mrs. Posey was born November 26, 1937, in Augusta, Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Louis and Ruth Togneri. She graduated from Winthrop College and received her master's degree from Bowie State University. Additionally, she was a certified teacher for "English as a Second Language," which she taught at Fort Benning, Ga., Korea and Fort Jackson, S.C. During her husband's 30-year military career she taught school, full and part-time, in Texas, Maryland and Virginia. Throughout their years in the military and during their retirement years in Columbia Miriam was active in numerous organizations. She served on several Medical Center Wives and Medical/Dental Wives Boards and was always active in their local church. Her participation in her church activities included Bible School Director, Director Week-day School (K-6), Meals on Wheels Coordinator, Sunday School Teacher/Communicants Teacher, Women of the Church Circle Chairman (various churches), Scouting Programs, Group facilitator Bible Study Fellowship and soup kitchen volunteer. After her retirement as Coordinator/Project Administrator for the Day Care Home Program - Child and Adult Care Food Program of the South Carolina Department of Social Services, she enjoyed her volunteer work at Cooperative Ministries and her involvement in other areas of interests, such as P.E.O. (Chapter U - philanthropic, educational sisterhood), "Read-A-Book" Book Club, Community Bible Study, travel, the Neighborhood Ladies Lunch Bunch and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Posey leaves behind her beloved husband of 52 years, Dr. William Posey; three children, Dr. Mark Posey (Dr. Allaire) of Columbia, Mrs. Susan Jones (Troy) of Charlotte, Mr. Stephen Posey (Tammy) of Aiken; eight grandchildren, Evan and Ryan Jones, Nathan, Jonathan, Benjamin and Emily Posey, Reagan and Kinsley Posey. She was predeceased by her grandson, Samuel. She is also survived by her siblings, Fran Carpenter of Nashville, Tenn.; Michael Togneri (Barbara) of Newnan, Ga.; and Nancy Hughes (Curtis) of Columbia. The family would especially like to thank the very special caregivers who showed so much love and compassion: Robbie Futch, Barbara Growley, Sharon Brantley, Val Wilson and Heartstrings Hospice.
