SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Doris Gruber Adams, 90 years old, died peacefully Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at White Oak Estates in Spartanburg. Doris Adams was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Frederick Fletcher Adams, Jr., pediatrician in Spartanburg for over 30 years. Dedicated wife, loving mother and friend to all who knew her, Doris was born June 1, 1921 in Charleston, South Carolina. Doris lived a few years of her childhood in Summerville, SC with her father and mother, George Reynolds Gruber and Doris Tecklenburg Gruber. After her father's death in her early childhood, Doris and her mother moved back to Charleston where they lived with Mrs. Charlotte Tecklenburg, sister of Doris' mother on St. Phillips Street. Doris grew up in Charleston and enjoyed a large extended family. Doris was the caring mother of Dr. Frederick Fletcher Adams III (Mrs. Betsy Sale Adams) and George Bruce Adams of Spartanburg; Dr. Robert Johnson Adams of Augusta, GA; John Scott Adams (Mrs. Sharon Kathleen Adams) of Crowder's Mountain, NC; and William Mark Adams (Mrs. Robin Jackson Adams) of Mt. Pleasant, SC. In addition to her children, Mrs. Adams is survived by her grandchildren Russell Scott Adams and Molly Fletcher Adams, children of Rob; Zachary Frederick Paul Adams, Juliana Prentis Adams, and Lauren Margaret Adams, children of Frederick; William Tanner Adams, child of Bruce; Henry Reynolds Adams and William Jackson Adams, son of Mark; and great granddaughter Izabella (Izzy) Hambrick Adams, daughter of William and Virginia Adams. Among Mrs. Adams greatest joys were her family and her many friends and spending time with them on Sullivan's Island at the family beach House which Doris bought from her aunt with saved grocery money. Among friends Doris was known as (Big D;) more than anything else she was known for her kind and gracious spirit. Few people have ever enjoyed life more than Doris Adams, who almost always had a smile on her face. One of her favorite sayings was (It's a blessing!) Doris will be deeply missed by all who loved her dearly. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 11:00 A.M conducted by the Reverend Michael Shackelford. Visitation with the family will be immediately after the service at St. John's Lutheran. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Mobile Meals, 419 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC. 29302. The family is at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Fletcher F.
