Robert L. Lowry (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Robert L. Lowry, 81, entered into rest on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at University Hospital. Homegoing services will be conducted Friday, March 18, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. from Gilbert Lambuth Memorial Chapel @ Paine College with Reverend Dr. Paul W. Gardner, officiating. Interment will be in Mount Olive Memorial Gardens. A native of Louisville, GA, he was born to the late Jimmy and Lizzie Lowry. Mr. Lowry was a member of Williams Memorial C.M.E. Church where he was the former Lay Leader for five years. While serving in the Augusta-Sparta District of the Georgia North Region 6th Episcopal District, he worked as District Lay Leader for three years and established Lay Councils throughout the districts. Additionally, he served as the Connectional Steward for the C.M.E. Church for eight years. Robert was elected the first black Commander of the 10th District for the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as Commander for Post 3837 for several years. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jimmy (Christine) Lowry, Jr., Jacksonville, FL and Richard Joe (Willie Lee) Lowry, Louisville, GA; sisters, Marie Archer, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Effie Hankins, New York City, NY. He is survived by his wife, Hattie P. Lowry; children, Cheryl D. Lowry, Smyrna, GA, Robert Lester (Judy) Lowry, Augusta, GA, and Michele Lowry, Stone Mountain, GA; one grandchild, Rashad, Augusta, GA; sisters, Julia (James) Ross, Uniondale, NY and Emma Sanders, Jacksonville, FL; brothers, Fred (Margie) Lowry, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; William (Juanita) Lowry, Ft. Lauderdale, FL and Eugene (Gwen) Lowry, Augusta, GA; one brother-in-law, Louis Hankins, New York City, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Friends may call the residence or W.
