AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at Charlie Norwood Veterans Administration Medical Center, Downtown Division. SSGT (Ret.) Daniel Hosie Cross of Papaya Street, husband of Mrs. Aretha B. Cross. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. from Tabernacle Baptist Church, 1223 Laney Walker Boulevard with Reverend Dr. Charles E. Goodman, Jr. officiating. Interment will be Monday, October 25, 2010 in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC 29229. **The family will receive friends this evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Daniel H. Cross, Sr. entered into rest Tuesday morning, October 19, 2010. He was born in Gurley, Alabama and received his primaru and high school education in the Public Education School System of Gurley. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army. During his career, he served as a military policeman for 21 years. During his service, he received numerous medals and awards, including the Purple Heart Award. He retired in 1966. After his retirement, he became a permanent resident of Augusta, Ga., and united with Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he remained until his death. His quest and hunger for equal rights placed him in the position of president of the Augusta Chaper of the NAACP from 1969-1973. During his service as president, 'The Riots of Augusta' occurred. He worked untiringly to get civil rights participants, who were held without just cause, relieved from jail. His impact was felt throughout the community and CSRA. In later years, he attended Augusta Law School and graduated in 1979. Daniel organized and established CSRA Security and Consultant Services where he served as CEO until he became ill. Survivors are: His wife, Aretha D. Cross; two children, Mary Jane (Bishop Milton) Madison, and Lt. Col. Daniel (Theresa) Cross, Jr.; one brother, Namon (Estella) Cross; four grandchildren, Lerone Smith, Daniel Cross, III, Jessica Cross and Jeleah Cross; sisters-in-law, Arletha Bennett, Shirlene Ball, Mae I Birt, Allene Walker, Geneva Roundtree, and Joyce Bennett; brothers-in-law, Johnnie Ball Jr., Eugene Walker, Leroy Bennett and Barry Walker; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
