MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. - Ronald J. Downes, 69, of Middlefield, CT and Harlem, GA, husband of Angie (Angela) Fiderio Downes, died on September 25, 2010 at the West Haven V.A. Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Emma Mauro Downes and Russell F. Downes. He graduated from Meriden High School in 1959 and was last employed by The Carabetta Company. Having served with the U.S. Army, he was a veteran of two wars. He completed two tours in Vietnam and served during Desert Storm. He was a member of the following: VFW Post #6445 of Harlem Ga., American Legion Post #0045 of Meriden, and D.A.V. Post #7 of Middletown. Besides his wife Angie, he is survived by two sons; Richard R. Downes and his wife Shannon of Georgia, Ronald J. Downes of Florida, two step children; Kathleen A. Stakey of CT, and Kenneth W. DiMauro and his wife Catherine of Colorado; three grandchildren and four step grandchildren, all equally loved. He has provided a stable home for Marisa Ann Spirito, one of many step great grandchildren that he loved. One sister and one brother-in-law, Betty Halibozek and Husband Joseph Halibozek; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Emma Mauro Downes and Russell F. Downes; a brother Francis Downes; and a sister Mary Lou Anderson. A gathering for friends and family will be held at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden, on Wednesday September 29th, 2010 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Funeral services and burial with military honors in Walnut Grove Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VFW Post 6445, P.O. Box 175, Harlem, GA 30814.
