Garland Bowie Hunter ( TRAVERSE CITY, Mich.)


TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - Garland Bowie "Buck" Hunter, 95, of Traverse City and formerly of La Jolla, CA, passed away Sunday, August 15, 2010 at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. Garland was born on June 19, 1915 in Screven County, GA. He graduated from Sylvania High School in June 1936 and then attended two years of business school before moving to California in 1939. After serving his country honorably in WWII with the United States Army, Garland married the former Mary I. Cump in 1957. They shared 52 years together before Mary passed away in 2009. Garland and Mary owned and operated Skipper's Twin Palms Restaurant in La Jolla until he sold the business in 1973. He was a hard working man who had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing and raising orchids, which thrived in the mild southern California climate. In 1957, he became a charter member of Torrey Pines Men's Golf Club in San Diego. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his parents, Garland Bowie "Jack" Hunter and Goldie B. Hunter Pearson Newton and seven siblings, Cyril Talmadge Hunter, John Robert Hunter, Lily Hunter Swindell, William Henry Hunter, Kate Hunter Wade, Jewel Hunter Zetterower and Samuel Moses Pearson. Garland is survived by his nieces and nephews: Sandra (Assad) Al-Shamma of Traverse City, MI; Jon Cump of Traverse City, MI; David (Norma) Cump of Irving, TX; Dr. Paul (Susie) Cump of Johns Island, SC; Charles Cump of Denver, CO; Luree Nowell of Sylvania, GA; Judy (Rufus) Futch of Statesboro, GA; Owen (Lucille) Zetterower of Statesboro, GA; Jane Harkleroad of Statesboro, GA; and Juliann R. Hunter of Decatur, GA, a host of great nieces and nephews, as well as many great, great nieces and nephews and even one great, great, great niece! Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be in the Middleground Baptist Church Cemetery in Sylvania, GA. The graveside service for both Mary and Garland will take place on the Hunter family plot on October 23, 2010, at 1 pm. The family would like to thank the Grand Traverse Pavilions for their loving care over the past four years.
