ATHENS, Ga. - Memorial Services for Mrs. Helen Gilbert Hayes, 81, of Athens, Georgia, who entered into rest March 29, 2010 will be conducted at Noon Wednesday, March 31 from Beech Haven Baptist Church. Dr. Stewart B. Simms officiating. Mrs. Hayes was native of Lake Wales Florida having been a long time resident of Athens. Helen was a well known businesswoman who ran the Shrimp Boat on Baxter Street with her husband, Jack Hayes, Sr. for more than 25 years. Generations of Bulldog fans from across the Southeast started their game day with the Hayes family waiting in line for fried biscuits and pulley bones. Mrs. Hayes was also a long time member of Beech Haven Baptist Church. Survivors include four children, Jack Hayes, Jr., Athens, Jill Hayes Rogers (Richard), North Augusta, SC, Joy Hayes Nelson (Walter), Watkinsville and Jerry Hayes (Terri), Daytona Beach, Florida. She also leaves behind four grandchildren, Kyle Nelson, Brad Nelson, Zack Rogers and Zo Rogers. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00-12:00 on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be sent in Helen Hayes' name to The American Heart Association, 1101 Northchase Pky SE, Marietta, Georgia 30067.
