WRENS, Ga. - Annie Kate Churchill Atwell, 106, wife of 69 years to the late Royce Edward Atwell, entered into rest Friday, March 12, 2010, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 1:00PM today, Monday, March 15, 2010 at the James Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Benjamin Martin and Dr. James M. Ford officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park, Augusta GA. Annie Kate was born in Warren County and was raised by her maternal grandparents, William and Dora Maria Jackson, after her parents died when she was two years old. She moved to Wrens with her husband in 1933 where they founded Atwell Pecan Company. She was the bookkeeper-all hand-written manual ledgers-and office manager until they sold the company and retired in 1973. She devoted her time to her family and church-Wrens UMC, where in the last decade enjoyed being the oldest member. Annie Kate was famous for her pound cakes and was still baking cakes and cupcakes at the age of 100 and taking them to the "old folks" in the area nursing homes. She was thrifty and frugal, yet very generous. Her life spanned a century of great change, but one thing that did not change was her faith. She was an icon in the community and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn A. (R.G.) Rabun; three grandchildren, Frances (Everett) Williford, Virginia Garrett, and Edward (Amanda) Rabun; five great-grandchildren, Christi Williford (Brad) Kosel, Shelly (Patrick) Parker, Addie (Langdon) Holzman, Jessica (Andy) Johns, and Jamey Rabun; and six great great-grandchildren, Tucker Parker, Javan Parker, Baylor Parker, Finley Holzman, Arden Holzman and Cash Kosel. Pallbearers will be Jim Gay, Jeff Gay, Billy Lewis, Jerry Dowdy, Charles Milburn and Jimmy Brown. Honorary memorials may be made to Wrens United Methodist Church, 202 Russell St, Wrens GA 30833. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to her care givers: Annelle Brown, Vickie Lane, Roberta Oliphant, Angelia Jackson, Ticinia White and Betty Bland. James Funeral Home - Wrens, GA
