BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Helen Wilkinson Smith, 88, of Birmingham, AL slipped away when she heard her Lord's call to be with Him on February 7, 2010. She joined her husband, Henry Porter Smith , parents Ola and Alfred Wilkinson, and other loved ones who had preceded her. She was the beloved Nana of Alex Beverly and Colin (Prisca) LeCroy of Dallas, Texas. She was the much-loved mother of Patricia Beverly and Shirley (Larry) LeCroy. Helen is also survived by her sister, Linda Fitzgerald of Hephzibah, Georgia; sisters-in-law Jackie Wilkinson of Macon, Georgia; Evelyn S. Rush of Cape Coral, FL. and Lillian S. Woodham of Ozark. She was born September 21, 1921 in Barbour County, Alabama. The majority of her adult life was spent in Augusta, Georgia where she raised, loved and nurtured her family. She was employed at the Richmond County Health Department from which she retired, and she was a member of Curtis Baptist Church. Her early retirement years were spent with Porter in Ozark, AL and a later happy, fun family time with Porter and a young Colin in Birmingham and Dothan. Following Porter's death, Helen moved from Eufaula, where she maintained membership with First Baptist Church, to Birmingham, to once again bless the lives of her family with her presence and special love for Alex. She enjoyed bird watching and observing backyard creatures, reading, and cooking. In addition to immediate family, Helen is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and special neighbors Dot and Carl Armstrong. Special thanks to the wonderful ladies of Family Private Care whose compassionate attention kept her safe and protected, and to "Reverend Jack," chaplain of Countryside Hospice, who brightened the last days of the "Duchess" with comfort and the love of the Holy Spirit. A memorial to her life will be held at Kent-Thornton Funeral Home in Dothan, Alabama, Tuesday, February 9, 2010, at 2:00 PM with visitation prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to ARC of Shelby County; Children's Harbor, 1 Our Children's Highway, Children's Harbour, AL 35010; or Make Way Partners, P.O.
